Overview
The Ghillie Suit, officially called the Shadowleaf Disguise in the game's crafting menu, is a nature-themed armor set in Crimson Desert that disguises the wearer with leaves and foliage. When the full set is equipped, most animals in the open world will no longer flee as the player approaches, making it one of the most useful pieces of gear for hunting and mount taming. The set is crafted from materials gathered through life skills, and the recipe is unlocked through the Pororin Research Institute.
Players typically refer to the Shadowleaf Disguise as the "ghillie suit" because of its leafy, camouflage-style appearance. The set provides a noticeable defensive upgrade over early-game armor, but its real value lies in the passive effect that prevents non-hostile animals from running away.
How to Unlock the Recipe
The crafting blueprint for the Shadowleaf Disguise set is obtained through the Research on Getting Closer to Nature project at the Pororin Research Institute. This is the very first research node available at Pororin, so it can be started as soon as the institute is accessible.
Reaching Pororin
Pororin is a hidden Shai village located southeast of Hernand, east of the Emberwind Workshop. The village is not accessible from the start of the game. To gain entry, the player must first complete a questline that involves finding the missing Shai children. During this quest, the player is knocked out by sleeping darts, retrieves a relic from a walking tree creature, and is eventually granted passage into the village.
Starting the Research
Once inside Pororin, speak with the lead researcher at the Research Institute. To begin the "Getting Closer to Nature" project, bring 5 Lavender to the researcher. Lavender is a common herb found throughout Pywel and can be gathered by hand from flowering bushes near fields and hillsides. After handing over the lavender, the project costs 1.10 Silver and takes roughly 2 hours of in-game time to complete. When the research finishes, the player receives the Shadowleaf Disguise crafting blueprints and a sustained supply of infinite arrows.

Crafting Materials
After the research completes and the blueprints are learned, the Shadowleaf Disguise set can be crafted at a workbench. The full set requires three categories of materials.
Material | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Felling large, ancient trees with the Demenissian Chainsaw (Logging) | Rare drop from the tallest old-growth trees. The chainsaw itself requires the "Electricity" research at a separate institute. | |
Gathered by hand near Pin Village | Found around the large tree in the water alcove near Pin Village. Not every bush yields leaves, so check multiple spots. Roughly 5 are needed for the full set. | |
Various Hides | Skinning animals through hunting | Small and medium hides obtained by hunting and skinning wildlife. |
Obtaining Flawless Timber
Flawless Timber is the most difficult material to acquire. Regular logging axes cannot produce it. The player needs the Demenissian Chainsaw, a power tool unlocked through a separate research chain that focuses on electricity. With the chainsaw equipped, head to the old-growth forests in northern Pailune or the outskirts of Delesyia and look for the tallest, thickest trees. Felling these trees has a chance to drop Flawless Timber alongside normal Timber and Fine Timber. The drop is not guaranteed, so expect to fell several large trees before collecting enough.
Finding Palmar Leaves
Palmar Leaves grow in a specific area near Pin Village. Look for the large tree in the alcove surrounded by water just outside the village. The leaf nodes are scattered around the base of this tree and along the waterside. Be aware that not every gathering node in the area actually yields Palmar Leaves; some are regular foliage. Move between the patches and gather from each one until you have collected roughly 5 leaves for the full set.
Effects and Gameplay Impact
The Shadowleaf Disguise has a single standout passive effect: non-hostile animals will no longer flee from the player. Under normal circumstances, deer, horses, rabbits, and other passive wildlife bolt the moment the player gets close. With the ghillie suit equipped, these animals remain calm and either stand still or continue their normal behavior, regardless of how close the player gets.
This passive does not apply to hostile creatures. Bears, wolves, and other aggressive predators will still attack on sight. The disguise only affects animals that would normally run rather than fight.
Hunting Benefits
For players focused on hunting, the ghillie suit removes the biggest frustration in the process: chasing fleeing prey. Without the disguise, deer and other herbivores sprint away the instant the player draws a weapon or moves too close, forcing the hunter to chase them across open terrain or rely on long-range bow shots. With the Shadowleaf Disguise equipped, the player can walk right up to their target, line up a clean shot or melee attack, and harvest the animal without any pursuit. This saves time and stamina, and it makes completing hunting challenges significantly easier.
Mount Taming Benefits
The ghillie suit is especially valuable for horse taming. Wild horses are skittish and run as soon as the player approaches, which normally forces the player to sprint after them and burn through stamina before even beginning the taming minigame. With the Shadowleaf Disguise on, horses remain calm and allow the player to walk up and mount them without any chase. This is particularly helpful when pursuing legendary horses, which are rare spawns that are easy to lose if they bolt before the player can reach them. Removing the chase phase saves a large amount of stamina that can then be used entirely on the taming minigame itself, dramatically improving the odds of a successful tame.
Effect Summary
Scenario | Without Ghillie Suit | With Ghillie Suit |
|---|---|---|
Approaching deer or rabbits | Animals flee immediately | Animals remain calm |
Approaching wild horses | Horses bolt, requiring a stamina-draining chase | Horses stay still, allowing a direct mount attempt |
Approaching legendary mounts | High risk of losing the horse before taming | Safe approach, full stamina for the taming minigame |
Encountering bears or wolves | Hostile, will attack | Still hostile, will attack (no effect) |
Appearance
The Shadowleaf Disguise covers the player character in layers of leaves and natural foliage, giving them the look of a walking bush. Despite the full-body leaf coverage, the set has a surprisingly clean design that does not look out of place during cutscenes or town visits. The outfit sits in the chest armor slot and visually overrides whatever the player was wearing underneath.
Tips and Recommendations
Prioritize the Pororin questline early. The sooner the player reaches Pororin and completes the "Getting Closer to Nature" research, the sooner they can start benefiting from the ghillie suit during all subsequent hunting and taming activities.
Gather Lavender in bulk. Lavender is used for several Pororin research projects beyond just this one. Picking up extras while exploring saves a return trip later.
Do the Electricity research first if possible. The Demenissian Chainsaw needed for Flawless Timber comes from a different research line. Starting that research early means the chainsaw will be ready by the time the Shadowleaf Disguise blueprint is learned.
Stock up on Palmar Leaves. The gathering area near Pin Village is small and the leaves do not drop from every node. Plan to spend some time checking each bush in the alcove near the large tree by the water.
Keep the suit for legendary horse hunts. Even if the player upgrades to stronger armor later, it is worth swapping back to the Shadowleaf Disguise whenever attempting to tame a legendary mount. The stamina saved by skipping the chase phase can make the difference between a successful and failed tame.
Do not rely on it against predators. Bears, wolves, and other hostile wildlife ignore the disguise completely. Always have a weapon ready when entering areas with aggressive fauna.
