Exploration
Exploration is one of the core pillars of Pokopia. The game world is split into five distinct regions, each inspired by a classic Kanto location and filled with wild Pokemon, hidden resources, and secrets to discover. Players explore primarily through their partner Ditto, whose Transform ability lets it copy Pokemon with special traversal moves that open up new paths and areas.
The Five Regions
Pokopia's overworld is divided into five themed regions. Each region has its own biome, native Pokemon species, unique materials, and environmental hazards. The regions unlock gradually as players progress through the game's story quests.
Region | Inspiration | Biome | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
Palette Town | Pallet Town | Grassland / Sandbox | The player's home region and primary settlement area. Lush green meadows, gentle rivers, and open fields make this the perfect place to build and expand. This is the creative sandbox where most building and farming takes place. |
Withered Wasteland | Fuchsia City | Arid / Desert | The starting exploration area. Despite its barren appearance, this region is rich in ore deposits and rare minerals. Rocky terrain and dry riverbeds create a rugged landscape for new adventurers to cut their teeth on. |
Bleak Beach | Vermilion City | Coastal / Beach | A sprawling coastline with sandy shores, tide pools, and rocky cliffs. Water-type Pokemon thrive here, and the ocean waters offer fishing spots and underwater caves to explore using Surf and Waterfall. |
Rocky Ridges | Pewter City | Mountain / Highland | Towering peaks, narrow ledges, and deep caverns characterize this mountainous region. Rock-type and Ground-type Pokemon dominate the area. The terrain demands vertical traversal with Glide and careful navigation. |
Sparkling Skylands | Celadon and Saffron Cities | Sky / Floating Islands | The most fantastical region, featuring floating islands suspended in the sky. Reaching and navigating these islands requires mastery of Glide and other aerial traversal moves. Rare Pokemon and premium resources can be found among the clouds. |
Each region contains its own pool of wild Pokemon to discover, and some species only appear in specific regions. Exploring all five areas thoroughly is key to completing the Pokedex.
Traversal Moves
Ditto can Transform into certain Pokemon to gain traversal abilities that let players cross water, scale cliffs, fly through the air, and more. These moves function as the primary tools for navigating the world beyond Ditto's standard walking and running.
Move | Pokemon | How to Use | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
Surf | Lapras | Press B near water | Ditto transforms into Lapras to cross bodies of water. Essential for reaching islands, exploring coastlines in Bleak Beach, and accessing water-locked areas. |
Glide | Dragonite | Press R while mid-air | Ditto transforms into Dragonite and glides through the air. Used to cross gaps, descend safely from heights, and reach floating platforms in Sparkling Skylands. |
Waterfall | Gyarados | Press A while surfing at the base of a waterfall | Ditto transforms into Gyarados and ascends waterfalls. Opens up access to elevated water sources and hidden caves behind waterfalls. |
Rollout | Graveler | Activated in appropriate terrain | Ditto transforms into Graveler and rolls at high speed across flat terrain. Useful for covering long distances quickly in open areas. |
Strength | Machoke | Interact with large obstacles | Ditto gains muscular arms (a partial transformation) and pushes or lifts heavy boulders and obstacles blocking paths. Some puzzle areas require Strength to clear the way. |
Jump | Magikarp | Activated at jump points | Ditto gains spring-like legs (a partial transformation) and makes a powerful leap. Used for reaching higher platforms and crossing short vertical gaps. |
Traversal moves are unlocked as players encounter the corresponding Pokemon in the wild and progress through the story. Not all moves are available from the start, so returning to earlier regions with new abilities often reveals previously inaccessible areas.
Fast Travel
Pokopia offers several ways to quickly move around the world without walking the entire distance.
Return Home
The most basic fast travel option. By opening the Pokedex and selecting "Return Home," players are instantly warped back to their Ditto Flag (home base) in Palette Town. This is available from the start of the game and works from anywhere in the overworld.
Fly
The Fly specialty is one of the specialties that certain Pokemon can have. When a Pokemon with the Fly specialty joins your settlement, it can serve as a living warp point. Each discovered Pokemon with Fly becomes a transport destination, and players can fast travel directly to that Pokemon's location. The more Fly-capable Pokemon you discover and recruit, the larger your fast travel network becomes.
Teleport
The Teleport specialty allows instant warping between specific points. Pokemon with this specialty provide another layer of fast travel convenience, particularly for reaching areas not covered by Fly destinations.
Rail Tracks and Handcar
Players can craft rail tracks and a handcar as part of the building system. Once placed, rail tracks create a fixed transportation network that the player rides along on a handcar. This is especially useful for connecting frequently visited areas like resource gathering spots, the settlement, and region entry points. Unlike Fly, the handcar provides a physical route that can be ridden at any time without requiring a Pokemon.
Discovery and the Pokedex
As players explore, they encounter wild Pokemon roaming the landscape. Walking up to a wild Pokemon and interacting with it registers the species in the Pokedex. The Pokedex tracks all discovered species and serves as the menu for Return Home and other fast travel options.
Wild Pokemon in Pokopia are not battled in the traditional sense. Instead, they can be befriended through feeding, gifting, and raising comfort levels. Befriended Pokemon may choose to visit or move into the player's settlement, where they contribute their specialties and moves to the community.
Cloud Islands
Cloud Islands are special multiplayer zones floating above the main map. Up to four players can visit a Cloud Island together for cooperative exploration. These islands feature unique resources, rare Pokemon encounters, and collaborative challenges not found in the single-player regions.
Accessing Cloud Islands requires an online connection and is part of the game's multiplayer features. Players can invite friends or match with other trainers to explore together.
Environmental Interactions
The world is filled with interactive elements that reward thorough exploration.
Glowing Spots: Sparkles on the ground that can be investigated with Rock Smash to reveal hidden items, including music CDs, crafting materials, and rare finds.
Sparkling Ripples: Shimmering water spots that yield special aquatic resources and occasionally rare materials when investigated.
Destructible Rocks: Boulders and rock formations that can be broken with the appropriate moves to reveal ores, gems, and hidden passages.
Harvestable Plants: Berries, flowers, and other vegetation scattered across all regions that provide raw materials for crafting.
Treasure Chests: Hidden containers placed in out-of-the-way locations, often requiring traversal moves to reach.
Tips for Exploration
Revisit earlier regions after unlocking new traversal moves. Areas that seemed like dead ends may have hidden paths accessible with Surf, Glide, or Waterfall.
Build rail tracks between your settlement and your most-visited resource spots to save time on repeat trips.
Pay attention to visual cues like glowing spots and sparkling ripples, as they often mark the location of valuable items.
Recruit Pokemon with the Fly specialty early to expand your fast travel network as quickly as possible.
Cloud Islands rotate their contents, so check back regularly for new resources and Pokemon encounters.
