Overview
Bows are one of the most versatile ranged weapons available to Kliff in Crimson Desert. They support stealth takedowns, allow you to create distance during chaotic fights, and accept a wide variety of projectile types with different status effects. The bow consistently ranks among the strongest weapon categories in the game due to this flexibility, earning an S-tier placement in most community tier lists.
This guide ranks every obtainable bow from best to worst, covering their base stats, Abyss Gear effects, locations, and practical advice on when to use each one. Whether you are pushing through the early chapters or hunting down late-game bosses, knowing which bow to carry and how to upgrade it can make a significant difference in your effectiveness at range.
Understanding Bow Stats
Before diving into the rankings, it helps to understand what each stat does for a bow. Attack is the most important number because it directly determines how much damage each arrow deals. However, secondary stats play a meaningful role in how a bow feels during combat.
Stat | Effect |
|---|---|
Attack | Base damage per arrow. Higher Attack means more damage on every shot. |
Determines how quickly you can draw and release arrows. Higher levels reduce the draw time between shots. | |
Increases the chance of landing a critical hit, which deals bonus damage. Particularly valuable against bosses and tough enemies. | |
Affects how fast Kliff moves while the bow is drawn. No bow currently provides a bonus to this stat. | |
Refinement | Indicates pre-applied upgrade levels. Unique bows found in the world often come with Refinement already applied, giving them a head start over crafted alternatives. You can further refine weapons at a Blacksmith. |
Abyss Gear Slots | Every bow has 5 slots for Abyss Gear. Unique bows come with pre-installed Abyss Gear effects, while crafted and standard bows have empty slots you can fill at a Witch. |
Beyond raw stats, your overall ranged damage is also influenced by the Marksmanship skill and the type of arrows you use. Poison Arrows apply damage-over-time, Explosive Arrows deliver burst damage to groups, and standard arrows are solid all-rounders. Once you unlock infinite ammo through Pororin Village research, arrow economy stops being a concern entirely.
Best Bows Ranking

1. Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow
The Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow is the strongest bow in Crimson Desert, with a base Attack of 19 and a powerful set of pre-installed Abyss Gear effects. It is a Unique-rarity weapon that comes with Refinement 3, meaning it already has several upgrade levels applied when you pick it up.

Location: Pailune Ancestor's Ruins
Travel north of Pailune until you reach the Pailune Ancestor's Ruins. Look for a cobblestone surface with a ladder leading underground. Descend the staircase into the ruins below. The path is guarded by a series of traps including spinning sawblades and swinging pendulums, so move carefully through each section. After navigating past the traps, you will find the bow resting on the ground in the sealed chamber at the end of the corridor.
Why it Ranks First
The standout feature of this bow is its Life Transference Abyss Gear, which grants lifesteal on every hit. Each arrow you land regenerates a portion of your health, making this weapon exceptional for sustained fights where you need to stay alive without burning through healing items. Destruction II further boosts your raw damage output, while Insight I provides additional utility. The combination of the highest base Attack among all bows (19), built-in lifesteal, and Crit Rate Lv. 1 makes it the best overall bow in the game.
2. Noble Man's Bow
The Noble Man's Bow is a boss-killer. While it trails the Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow by one point of base Attack (18 vs 19), it compensates with Malicebane I, an Abyss Gear effect that increases damage against mighty foes by 40%. This makes it arguably the best bow for boss encounters specifically.

Location: Valgrind Tomb
The Noble Man's Bow is hidden inside Valgrind Tomb, located north of Pailune (just below the letter "N" on the world map). To find it, head to the tomb entrance and look for a small opening in the right side wall before you enter the main chamber. Crouch through this narrow passage to access a hidden room containing a treasure chest. Open the chest to receive the Noble Man's Bow along with a Palmar Pill.
Note that Valgrind Tomb requires progressing through Chapters 1 through 7 of the main story to reach naturally. Attempting to travel to Pailune earlier is possible but risky, as the enemies in the area can be significantly higher level than your character.
Why it Ranks Second
Against regular enemies, this bow performs similarly to the Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow thanks to comparable base stats and Destruction I. Where it truly shines is boss fights. The 40% damage bonus from Malicebane I against mighty foes stacks with your base Attack and any arrow damage bonuses, resulting in significantly higher damage per shot during the encounters that matter most. Many players keep both the Noble Man's Bow and the Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow in their inventory, swapping to the Noble Man's Bow specifically for boss encounters.
Even if you do not use the Noble Man's Bow as your primary ranged weapon, you can visit a Witch to extract the Malicebane Abyss Gear and embed it into whatever weapon you prefer.
3. Tommasoan Bow
The Tommasoan Bow matches the Noble Man's Bow at 18 base Attack and adds an Attack Speed Lv. 1 bonus, making it the fastest-firing high-damage bow in the game. While it lacks the pre-installed Abyss Gear cores that give the top two bows their edge, its clean stat profile means all five Abyss Gear slots are free for your own core combinations.

How to Obtain: Bandits Riding Wolves
The Tommasoan Bow is awarded as a quest reward for completing the Bandits Riding Wolves bounty quest. This quest requires you to track down and defeat Gristle, the Sandfang Marauder. The fight is not straightforward: you will need to encounter and fight Gristle a total of three times before he is finally defeated. After the third and final confrontation, the Tommasoan Bow is awarded automatically.
Why it Ranks Third
The combination of 18 base Attack and Attack Speed Lv. 1 makes this bow excellent for rapid-fire ranged pressure. It fires noticeably faster than the two S-tier bows, which both lack any Attack Speed bonus. Players who prefer a quicker fire rate over lifesteal or boss damage bonuses will find the Tommasoan Bow to be their best option for general exploration and combat. The five open Abyss Gear slots also mean you can customize it with exactly the effects you want, potentially matching or exceeding the utility of the top-ranked bows with the right core setup.
4. Sydmon Bow
The Sydmon Bow occupies a solid middle ground. With an Attack of 13 and Refinement 1, it deals noticeably more base damage than the three starter-tier bows (all Attack 10) while being easy to find fairly early in the game. It has no secondary stat bonuses, but its higher Attack makes up for that in raw output.

Location: Hernand Highlands
Head to the northern part of the Hernand Highlands. Look for a crate near a patch of flowers by the river. On the map, head due north from the "S" in "Highlands" to find the spot. The Sydmon Bow is sitting next to the crate on the ground and can be picked up without any combat or puzzles.
Why it Ranks Fourth
The Sydmon Bow is the best easily accessible early-game upgrade over the starting Grey Wolf Bow. Its 30% higher base Attack translates directly into more damage on every shot, and the Refinement 1 means it already has a small head start on upgrades. While it lacks the Critical Rate bonus of the Bekker Bow or the Attack Speed of the White Wood Bow, the raw damage advantage outweighs those secondary perks at this stage of the game. The five open Abyss Gear slots let you customize it with whatever effects you obtain first.
5. Grey Wolf Bow
The Grey Wolf Bow is Kliff's starting ranged weapon, equipped by default from the beginning of the game during the Ambush prologue quest. With an Attack of 10 and Attack Speed Lv. 1 as its only secondary stat, it is among the weakest bows in terms of raw capability. Despite this, it remains a perfectly serviceable weapon well into the mid-game when properly upgraded.

Why it Still Works
The Grey Wolf Bow's strength is not its stats but its availability. You have it from minute one, and every upgrade you invest in it carries forward. Refining it at a Blacksmith increases its Attack, and you can fill all five Abyss Gear slots with effects obtained from other weapons via a Witch. Many players ride the Grey Wolf Bow through the entire early game simply by keeping it upgraded, only switching when they find one of the Unique bows in the later chapters.
6. White Wood Bow
The White Wood Bow is a craftable bow that shares the same base Attack (10) and Attack Speed Lv. 1 as the Grey Wolf Bow. It is an alternative for players who want a fresh bow to refine separately or who sold their starter weapon.

How to Craft
To craft the White Wood Bow, you first need to read the crafting manual Ranged Weapons of the World: Bows, Vol. I. This manual is found on a bookshelf on the first floor of the Spire of Insight, located southeast of Hernand. To enter the Spire, use Blinding Flash or a fire-based attack to burn away the thorny thickets blocking the entrance, then place a pebble in the basin on the door. Once unlocked, bring the following materials to any Blacksmith:
Timber x10
Fine Timber x5
Why it Ranks Sixth
The White Wood Bow is functionally identical to the Grey Wolf Bow in stats. It ranks below the Grey Wolf Bow because it requires both the crafting manual and materials to obtain, while the Grey Wolf Bow is free from the start. However, the White Wood Bow is useful if you want a second bow to refine on a separate track, or if you sacrificed your Grey Wolf Bow as refinement material for another weapon.
One practical use: you can craft two White Wood Bows and use the second as refinement material for the first, saving yourself a trip to gather individual crafting resources.
7. Bekker Bow
The Bekker Bow is the most accessible purchasable bow in the game. You can either craft it at any Blacksmith (using the same crafting manual as the White Wood Bow) or simply buy it from the Hernand Equipment Shop for 4.32 Silver.

Why it Ranks Seventh
The Bekker Bow trades the Attack Speed bonus found on the Grey Wolf and White Wood Bows for Crit Rate Lv. 1 instead. While critical hits can deal impressive burst damage, they are inconsistent compared to the reliable damage-per-second improvement that Attack Speed provides. The lack of Attack Speed makes the bow feel noticeably slower to fire. That said, if you happen to reach Hernand and want a quick sidegrade with a different stat profile, buying the Bekker Bow from the Equipment Shop takes seconds and costs very little.
Refinement and Upgrades
Every bow in Crimson Desert can be refined up to 10 times at a Blacksmith. Refinement permanently increases the bow's base Attack and costs crafting materials (no silver required). Levels 1 through 4 use standard materials such as Timber, Iron Ore, and Fine Timber. Levels 5 through 10 require Abyss Artifacts, which are rarer materials obtained from dungeons, bosses, and secret locations.
There is also an alternative refinement method: sacrificing an exact duplicate of the same bow. For example, if you have two White Wood Bows, you can use the second one as refinement material instead of gathering Timber and Iron Ore. This can save time if you happen to craft or find duplicates.
Separately from permanent refinement, bows can receive temporary stat boosts through reinforcement at Grindstones found throughout the world. Reinforcement provides a temporary attack buff that wears off over time. Both systems stack, so a fully refined bow with a fresh reinforcement buff deals the highest possible damage.
Arrow Types and Synergies
Your choice of bow matters, but so does your choice of arrows. Different arrow types apply different status effects, and combining the right arrows with the right bow creates powerful synergies.
Effect | How to Obtain | |
|---|---|---|
Standard Arrows | Basic damage, no special effect | |
Fire Arrows | Ignites targets, dealing burn damage over time | Hold standard arrows near any open flame (torch, brazier, campfire) |
Applies poison, dealing damage over time and slowing targets | Buy the blueprint from the Back Alley Shop outside Hernand for 10 Silver, then craft | |
Explosive Arrows | Area-of-effect damage on impact; staggers groups of enemies | Sold by the back alley vendor in Thalwynd (limited stock) |
The Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow pairs especially well with Poison Arrows, since the lifesteal from Life Transference keeps you healthy while the poison ticks away at enemy health. For boss fights, the Noble Man's Bow combined with Explosive Arrows allows you to deal massive burst damage with the +40% Malicebane bonus applied on top of the explosion. The Tommasoan Bow benefits most from standard or Fire Arrows, where its faster fire rate lets you apply more hits and more burn stacks in a shorter window.
Recommended Bow Progression
The ideal path through the game's bows depends on your playstyle and how much exploration you do. General progression route that maximizes your ranged damage at each stage:
Early game (Prologue through Chapter 2): Start with the Grey Wolf Bow. Refine it at Blacksmiths whenever you have the materials. If you pass through Hernand, you can pick up the Bekker Bow from the Equipment Shop for a Crit Rate sidegrade, or craft a White Wood Bow once you find the manual.
Mid-game (Chapters 3 through 5): Detour to the Hernand Highlands to grab the Sydmon Bow for a 30% Attack increase. Continue refining it and slotting Abyss Gear as you obtain effects from other loot.
Late-game (Chapters 5 through 7): Complete the Bandits Riding Wolves bounty quest to earn the Tommasoan Bow. Its 18 Attack and Attack Speed bonus make it a major step up.
Endgame (Chapter 7 onward): Retrieve the Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow from Pailune Ancestor's Ruins for its Life Transference lifesteal and top-tier base Attack. For boss fights specifically, also grab the Noble Man's Bow from Valgrind Tomb for the Malicebane damage bonus.
Bow Challenges
Scattered throughout the world are Bow Challenges, optional skill tests that reward you for hitting targets within a time limit. Completing these challenges grants experience, Silver, and sometimes unique rewards. They also serve as excellent practice for improving your aim and getting comfortable with different bows. Check the Challenges page for a complete list of locations.
Tips for Maximizing Bow Damage
Invest in Marksmanship. Your Marksmanship skill level directly increases all ranged damage. Leveling it up benefits every bow equally.
Use the right arrows for the job. Poison Arrows are excellent for damage-over-time against single targets, while Explosive Arrows shine against groups. Standard arrows work best for general use, and Fire Arrows are free to create near any flame source.
Unlock infinite ammo early. Complete the research at Pororin Village to remove standard arrow consumption entirely. This lets you fire freely without worrying about running out.
Extract valuable Abyss Gear. If you find a Unique bow whose Abyss Gear you want on a different weapon, visit a Witch to extract and re-embed the gear. Malicebane from the Noble Man's Bow, for example, is powerful on any weapon during boss fights.
Combine bow play with melee combos. Switching to the bow mid-combo to create distance or apply status effects, then closing back in with your melee weapon, is a legitimate and highly effective tactic.
Keep refining your bow. Even starter-tier bows become competitive with consistent Refinement at a Blacksmith. Do not neglect upgrades just because you plan to replace a bow later.
Carry two bows for different situations. The Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow for general exploration (lifesteal sustain) and the Noble Man's Bow for boss fights (+40% Malicebane damage) is a powerful combination in the late game.
No Single Best Bow
Crimson Desert's gear economy deliberately flattens bow choices at the top end. Every bow at max refinement ends up with identical stats to every other bow in the same category, so the "best bow" question reduces to picking a category (attack, attack speed, or crit) rather than a specific model. Cosmetic differences aside, there is no model inside a category that outperforms the others.
Bow Categories at Max Refinement
Every bow in the game falls into one of three stat categories at maximum Refinement. All bows within the same category end up with the exact same stats once fully upgraded, so your choice between individual models inside a category is purely cosmetic.
Pure attack: the highest raw attack value of the three categories. The Noble Bow is the headline example.
Attack speed: 2 levels of attack speed baked into the weapon. Grey Wolf Bow and Tommasoan Bow both land here at max refinement.
Crit rate: 2 levels of crit rate. The early Breaker Bow sits in this bucket and is indistinguishable from end-game crit bows once refined.
Because every refined bow inside a category produces the same numbers, the "best" bow is whichever model fits your build (attack, speed, or crit) and whichever skin you prefer. Refining to the higher tiers costs a lot of Timber and Flawless Timber as you climb, so it is worth picking a favourite early and committing.
Per-Category Picks
Attack speed, easy pick: the Grey Wolf Bow you start with is already an attack-speed bow. It refines into the same stat line as the fancier options.
Attack speed, flashier visual: the Tommasoan Bow sold at refinement level 4 by the Tashkalp equipment shop. Useful as a bump if you have neglected bow refinement in the mid-game. Gifting Hides to raise trust may be required.
Crit rate, earliest option: the Breaker Bow from the Hernand equipment shop. Basic visuals, but refines to identical stats as end-game crit bows.
Pure attack pickup: the Noble Bow in a chest inside Valgrind Tomb. Comes with an Insight abyss gear pre-slotted, which bumps its effective crit rate to 1 out of the box.
End-game crafting: the Ranged Weapons of the World - Bows, Vol. IV book unlocks Tommasoan, Shadowleaf Bow, Tardic Bow, and Bow of Fleeting at any Smithy.
Assyrian Bow: learnt from the snake-god weapon book at Serpent Shrine. A visually distinctive attack-speed option.
Crit rate is generally considered the strongest of the three categories because crits double damage, so each point in Crit Rate is strong in practice. That said, the final stat tuning still has a few quirks, and Attack Speed builds stay very competitive. Pick the category that suits your build and commit to refining one bow rather than spreading Flawless Timber across multiple models.
