Overview
Blacksmiths are specialized NPCs found throughout Pywel who sell weapons, provide weapon and armor refinement services, craft jewelry, handle Abyss Gear slotting, and repair damaged equipment. They are the primary way to upgrade both offensive and defensive capabilities in Crimson Desert. Every major settlement has at least one blacksmith, and the Greymane Camp blacksmith can be upgraded through base development to match the services available in the largest cities.
Blacksmiths are distinct from tailors, who focus exclusively on cloth and leather armor refinement. However, blacksmiths handle metal-based armor refinement as well as all weapon upgrades. If you need to enhance a steel breastplate or a greatsword, the blacksmith is the NPC you want. For robes, leather tunics, or cloth gear, visit a tailor instead.
Blacksmith Locations
Blacksmiths can be found in most major towns across the continent. Each city blacksmith carries region-specific stock, and their refinement services scale with the settlement's importance. Below is a breakdown of confirmed blacksmith locations:

Location | Region | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Main city blacksmith near the market district. Full refinement services up to the highest tier. Located close to Hernand Castle | ||
Coastal town blacksmith. Stocks weapons suited to the region's maritime threats. Full refinement and jewelry crafting available. | ||
Regional capital blacksmith with a wide selection of high-tier weapons. Offers all blacksmith services including advanced Abyss Gear slotting. | ||
Mountain region blacksmith. Known for stocking heavy weapons and sturdy metal armor pieces. Materials from local mining nodes are sold here. | ||
Frozen region blacksmith. Stocks cold-resistant gear. Limited jewelry crafting options due to the remote location. | ||
Your home base. Starts with basic services but can be upgraded through camp development to unlock all tiers of refinement, crafting, and slotting. | ||
Frontier outposts | Various | Smaller settlements in remote areas may have basic blacksmiths with limited stock and lower-tier refinement only. |
City blacksmiths generally offer the same core services, but their weapon inventories differ based on the region. A blacksmith in a coastal town stocks different weapon types than one in the frozen mountains of Kweiden. It is worth visiting blacksmiths in every region you explore to see what unique weapons they carry.
Blacksmith Services
Blacksmiths offer five core services. Not every blacksmith provides all five; frontier outposts may only offer purchasing and basic repair, while city blacksmiths and a fully upgraded Greymane Camp blacksmith provide the complete set.
Service | Description | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
Weapon purchasing | Browse and buy weapons from the blacksmith's inventory. Stock varies by region and blacksmith tier. Vendor inventory refreshes daily. | |
Weapon refinement | Upgrade a weapon's base attack stat through a tiered enhancement system. Each refinement level increases damage output progressively. | |
Armor refinement | Upgrade metal-based armor pieces (helmets, gauntlets, greaves, breastplates) to increase their defense stats. Works the same way as weapon refinement. | Gold, ores, crafting materials |
Jewelry crafting | Craft accessories such as necklaces, rings, and earrings. Jewelry provides stat bonuses and set effects when multiple pieces from the same set are equipped. | Gold, gemstones, rare materials |
Abyss Gear slotting | Insert or remove Abyss Gear augments from weapon and armor slots. Common weapons have up to three slots. | Abyss Gear items |
Repair | Restore durability to damaged weapons and metal armor. Equipment loses durability through combat and environmental damage. Broken items lose a portion of their stats until repaired. | Gold |
Weapon and Armor Refinement
Refining equipment is the primary upgrade path in Crimson Desert. The refining system works as a tiered enhancement system where each level boosts the item's base stats. The process is the same for weapons and metal armor, though the specific materials differ.
How Refinement Works
Bring a weapon or armor piece to any blacksmith that offers refinement services.
The blacksmith displays the required gold cost and materials for the next refinement level.
If you have the materials, confirm the upgrade. The item's base stats increase immediately.
Higher refinement levels require progressively rarer materials and more gold.
Refinement Levels 1 Through 4
The first four refinement levels use common resources that are readily available through normal gameplay. Ores from mining nodes, basic crafting materials purchased from NPC vendors, and moderate amounts of gold are all you need. These early upgrades are inexpensive and provide a solid boost to your gear's effectiveness. Every player should aim to reach refinement level 4 on their primary equipment as early as possible, since the cost-to-benefit ratio is very favorable.
Level | Materials Required | Stat Increase |
|---|---|---|
1 | Common ore, small gold cost | Minor stat boost |
2 | Common ore, basic crafting materials, moderate gold | Noticeable improvement |
3 | Uncommon ore, crafting materials, increased gold | Significant stat gain |
4 | Uncommon ore, refined crafting materials, higher gold | Strong baseline boost; most cost-effective stopping point |
Refinement Level 5 and Beyond
Starting at refinement level 5, the material requirements shift dramatically. Common ores and basic crafting materials are no longer sufficient. You will need blood stones and abyss artifacts in addition to the standard gold and ore costs. Blood stones drop from powerful enemies and world bosses, while abyss artifacts come from Abyss Dungeons and other endgame content. The jump in difficulty and material rarity means that level 5+ refinements are a long-term investment that you work toward over the course of your progression.

Level | Materials Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
5 | Rare ore, blood stones, abyss artifacts, substantial gold | First tier requiring endgame materials |
6+ | Greater quantities of blood stones, higher-grade abyss artifacts, premium ore, large gold investment | Each subsequent level costs more; reserved for dedicated players and endgame builds |
Refinement costs scale exponentially. A level 1 upgrade might cost a handful of common ore and a few hundred gold, while pushing to level 6 or higher can consume tens of thousands of gold and multiple rare drops. Plan your material gathering accordingly and prioritize the pieces of equipment you intend to keep long-term.
Jewelry Crafting
In addition to weapon and armor work, blacksmiths can craft accessories: necklaces, rings, and earrings. Jewelry provides passive stat bonuses and, when multiple pieces from the same set are equipped, additional set effects. Crafting jewelry requires gemstones, rare materials, and gold.
The available jewelry recipes depend on the blacksmith's location and tier. City blacksmiths offer a wider selection of recipes, while frontier outposts may only have basic options. The Greymane Camp blacksmith unlocks more jewelry recipes as you upgrade the camp. Each piece of jewelry can also be refined at a blacksmith, following the same tiered system as weapons and armor.
Jewelry Type | Typical Bonuses | |
|---|---|---|
Necklace | Neck | Health, defense, or elemental resistance bonuses |
Ring | Finger (two slots) | Attack power, critical hit chance, or stamina bonuses |
Earring | Ear | Accuracy, evasion, or special effect bonuses |
Equipping multiple jewelry pieces from the same set activates set bonuses. For example, wearing a matching necklace and two rings from the same crafting line might grant bonus attack power on top of each piece's individual stats. Experiment with different combinations to find the setup that best supports your build.
Abyss Gear Slotting
Beyond refinement and crafting, weapons can be enhanced with Abyss Gear augments. Each common weapon has up to three Abyss Gear slots. These augments provide additional effects such as:
Higher critical hit chance
Bonus damage against specific enemy types
Elemental effects (fire, ice, lightning) added to strikes
Abyss Gear items are found throughout the world, often as rewards from Abyss Dungeons and boss encounters. Slotting and removing Abyss Gear is done at a blacksmith. Removing an augment does not destroy it, so feel free to swap augments as your build evolves. Some augments synergize well together: pairing attack speed boosts with critical hit chance, for instance, creates a noticeable increase in sustained damage output.
Vendor Stock and Daily Refresh
Blacksmith vendor inventories are not static. Their weapon and material stock refreshes on a daily cycle. This means that if a blacksmith is sold out of a particular weapon or crafting material, you can return the next in-game day to find it restocked. The daily refresh also applies to limited-quantity materials such as uncommon ores and specialty crafting components.
Take advantage of this mechanic by visiting blacksmiths regularly, especially when you are stockpiling materials for a high-level refinement. If a blacksmith sells a crafting material you need, buy it every day when the stock refreshes. Over time, this is one of the most reliable ways to accumulate the resources required for upgrades beyond level 4. Keep in mind that different blacksmiths restock different items, so rotating between cities can speed up your material gathering.
Repair
Weapons and metal armor lose durability through combat, environmental hazards, and general use. When an item's durability drops too low, it loses a portion of its stats until repaired. Blacksmiths offer repair services for a gold fee that scales with the item's quality and how much durability has been lost.
Keeping your gear in good condition is important, especially before tackling world bosses or Abyss Dungeons. A fully broken weapon deals significantly less damage, which can be the difference between success and failure in difficult encounters. Make it a habit to check your equipment durability whenever you visit a town.
Grindstones and Anvils in the World
Scattered across Pywel are grindstones and anvils that players can interact with outside of blacksmith shops. These environmental objects provide temporary combat buffs:

Object | Buff | Duration | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
Grindstone | +5 Attack | Temporary | Found near camps, roads, and settlements. Interact to sharpen your weapon for a temporary attack boost. |
Anvil | +5 Defense | Temporary | Found near blacksmith shops and military outposts. Interact to reinforce your armor for a temporary defense boost. |
These buffs do not stack with themselves, but a grindstone buff and an anvil buff can be active at the same time. Before heading into a difficult fight, look for a grindstone or anvil nearby. The +5 attack from a grindstone and +5 defense from an anvil together provide a meaningful edge, especially in the early and mid-game when your base stats are still relatively low.
Grindstones and anvils are not marked on the map by default. You will discover them naturally as you explore. Some are located near fast travel points or outside dungeon entrances, making them convenient to use before entering challenging content.
Greymane Camp Blacksmith
The blacksmith at your Greymane Camp starts with basic services but can be upgraded through the camp development system:
Tier | Services Unlocked |
|---|---|
Tier 1 | Basic weapon purchasing, low-level refinement (levels 1-2), simple repairs |
Tier 2 | Mid-level refinement (levels 3-4) unlocked. Broader weapon stock. Basic jewelry crafting recipes become available. |
Tier 3 | High-tier refinement (level 5+) unlocked. Access to advanced Abyss Gear slotting. Full jewelry crafting catalog. Expanded material vendor stock. |
Upgrading the camp blacksmith requires investing resources gathered through logging, mining, and other life skills. A fully upgraded camp blacksmith saves significant travel time since you can handle all weapon and armor upgrades, jewelry crafting, and Abyss Gear work from your home base instead of riding to distant cities.
Connection to the Refining System
Blacksmiths are the physical access point for the broader refining system that governs gear progression in Crimson Desert. While the refining system encompasses all types of equipment upgrades (weapons, armor, jewelry, Abyss Gear), blacksmiths are where you actually perform those upgrades for metal-based items. Understanding how refinement tiers, material sourcing, and cost scaling work is essential for efficient progression.
The refining system rewards players who plan ahead. Gathering materials from mining nodes, purchasing vendor stock daily, farming boss drops for blood stones, and running Abyss Dungeons for artifacts all feed into the same upgrade pipeline. Blacksmiths convert those raw materials into tangible stat gains on your gear.
Blacksmiths vs Tailors
Crimson Desert separates weapon and armor vendors into distinct NPC types. Blacksmiths handle weapons, metal armor, and jewelry crafting. Tailors handle cloth and leather armor refinement. Both follow similar refinement and slotting mechanics, but you need to visit the right NPC for each type of equipment. If a settlement has a blacksmith, there is usually a tailor nearby as well.
Tips
Refine everything to level 4 first. The cost is low and the stat gains are substantial. Level 4 is the most cost-effective stopping point before materials become much rarer.
Start with weapons. Offensive upgrades tend to have a bigger impact on clear speed and boss kill times than defensive upgrades. Get your main weapon to level 4 before investing heavily in armor refinement.
Check multiple blacksmiths across different regions. Each one stocks different weapon types suited to the local threats.
Upgrade the Greymane Camp blacksmith early to avoid long trips back to cities for refinement and repairs.
Buy materials from blacksmith vendors every day. Their stock refreshes on a daily cycle, and consistently purchasing crafting materials is the easiest way to stockpile for high-level refinements.
A refined weapon you are comfortable with often outperforms an unrefined weapon of a higher base tier. Do not throw away a well-refined weapon just because you found something with a slightly higher base stat.
Save blood stones and abyss artifacts for the specific weapon and armor pieces you plan to keep long-term. Do not waste endgame materials on gear you will replace soon.
Look for grindstones and anvils in the world before entering difficult content. The temporary +5 attack and +5 defense buffs can make a real difference.
Repair your equipment regularly. Fighting with broken gear is a significant stat penalty that can get you killed in tougher encounters.
Experiment with Abyss Gear combinations. Removing augments does not destroy them, so you can freely test different setups to find what works best for your build.
Craft jewelry as soon as it becomes available. The passive stat bonuses from accessories add up, and set bonuses can give you a meaningful edge.
