Yang
Yang is the Railway Worker NPC in Starsand Island who builds Starsand Station and unlocks the fast travel bus network. This guide covers the full Building Starsand Station quest walkthrough, material requirements, bus stop repair costs, and Yang's role in enabling crossover character arrivals.
Yang
Yang is the Railway Worker of Starsand Island. His primary role is constructing Starsand Station, which unlocks the fast travel bus network across the island. He is a non-romanceable quest NPC who appears roughly one week into gameplay and remains associated with the station area after construction is complete.
Yang does not run a shop and does not appear to participate in the standard gift or friendship system. His entire role revolves around the Building Starsand Station questline, which is one of the most important early-game quests because fast travel dramatically reduces the time spent walking between locations.
Location
Yang first appears near the beach when the Building Starsand Station quest triggers. Solara directs you to meet her at the coast, where Yang and his construction crew are waiting. His exact beach-side location is marked on the map once the quest begins.
After the station is built, Yang remains in the area around Starsand Station. He can be located via the phone's Social app once you have interacted with him.
Building Starsand Station Quest
This is Yang's defining questline and one of the biggest quality-of-life unlocks in the game. The quest triggers approximately one week after the player arrives on the island. Completing it builds Starsand Station and activates the bus stop fast travel network.
Quest Steps
Receive a notification to find Solara near the Community Center in the morning.
Solara asks you to meet her at the beach to find Railway Worker Yang.
Speak to Solara at the beach, then speak to Yang.
Yang's construction crew needs food. Cook 4 Soup Dumplings and deliver them.
Yang gives a second request: gather 5 Iron Sheets and 5 Glass Panes.
Deliver the construction materials to Yang.
Starsand Station is built. Bus stop icons appear on the map.
Soup Dumplings
The first deliverable is 4 Soup Dumplings. The recipe is available at any campfire and requires two processed ingredients:
Ingredient | Source |
|---|---|
Flour | Process Wheat in a Separator |
Meat Bites | Process any raw meat (Beef, Fowl, Pork, or Mutton) in a Separator |
Each batch of Soup Dumplings requires 2 Meat Bites and 3 Flour. You need 4 total, so prepare at least 4 Wheat and 4 pieces of raw meat before the quest triggers. If you have been farming Wheat from the start, you should have enough by the end of the first week.
Construction Materials
After feeding the crew, Yang asks for building materials. Both require mid-tier crafting stations:
Material | Quantity | How to Craft |
|---|---|---|
Iron Sheet | 5 | Smelt Iron Ore into Iron Ingots at a Furnace, then process Iron Ingots at a Cutter II |
Glass Pane | 5 | Smelt Sand into Glass Bricks at a Furnace, then process Glass Bricks at a Cutter II |
Both materials require a Cutter II and an upgraded Furnace. If you have not built these yet, the quest gives you a natural reason to upgrade your crafting setup. Iron Ore is abundant in Starsand Town area mines, and Sand can be gathered from the beach where Yang is waiting.
Unlocking the Bus Network
Completing the quest builds Starsand Station itself, but the individual bus stops around the island still need to be repaired before you can travel to them. Each bus stop requires a separate material donation:
Material | Quantity per Stop |
|---|---|
Stone Bricks | 10 |
Glass Panes | 5 |
Softwood Planks (or Bamboo Boards for Cloudrest Lake) | 10 |
Iron Sheets | 5 |
You need to repair at least two bus stops before fast travel becomes usable (you need both a departure and arrival point). Bus stop locations are marked on the map with train icons after the station is complete. Prioritize the stops nearest to areas you visit frequently, like the Moonlit Forest entrance or Cloudrest Lake.
Crossover Character Arrivals
Starsand Station also serves as the arrival point for crossover characters from the My Time series. After the station is operational:
Gust and Ginger (from My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock) arrive at the station and become available as NPCs on the island.
Fang and Nia arrive at the station later in the game's progression.
This makes the Building Starsand Station quest a prerequisite for accessing crossover content. If you want to interact with Gust, Ginger, Fang, or Nia, the station must be built first.
Gift Preferences
Yang's gift preferences have not been documented by the community during the current Early Access period. Unlike most NPCs on the island, Yang functions primarily as a quest NPC and may not participate in the standard friendship and gift system. Multiple comprehensive gift guides that cover all 25+ other residents do not include Yang in their lists.
Quest Preparation Tips
Start growing Wheat early. You need at least 4 Wheat processed into Flour for the Soup Dumplings. Wheat grows quickly and you will use it for other recipes too.
Keep raw meat in your storage. Any type (Beef, Fowl, Pork, Mutton) works for Meat Bites. If you have been raising animals or hunting, you likely have some already.
Build a Separator before the quest triggers. You need it to process both Wheat into Flour and meat into Meat Bites.
Upgrade to a Cutter II and improved Furnace before or during the quest. Both are needed to produce Iron Sheets and Glass Panes.
Collect Sand from the beach while you are there talking to Yang. You need Sand to make Glass Bricks, and the beach is the most convenient source.
After building the station, repair the two closest bus stops first. Fast travel saves an enormous amount of walking time, so getting even two stops online is a huge quality-of-life improvement.
The Cloudrest Lake bus stop uses Bamboo Boards instead of Softwood Planks. Make sure you have Bamboo available if that is one of your first two stops.
