Overview
Homeward Trail is one of the later zones in the Moonlit Forest dungeon in Starsand Island. It sits between Grain Haven / Darkwater Shore and Serenity's Rest in the dungeon progression sequence. The zone consists primarily of ancient ruins with wooden scaffolding, serving as the final transition area before reaching the Ruin Guard boss arena. While not as resource-dense as zones like Harvest Yard or Azure Bay, Homeward Trail contains late-game resources and connects the deeper forest areas to the endgame content.
Compared to the tightly packed combat encounters in earlier zones, Homeward Trail is relatively calm. The focus here shifts from fighting enemies to navigating vertical platforming sections through crumbling stone architecture and collecting the forageable ingredients scattered among the ruins. Players who have made it this far through the Moonlit Forest should treat this zone as a final opportunity to stock up on supplies and activate a critical camp before the challenging encounters ahead.
Location in the Moonlit Forest
Homeward Trail occupies the tenth position in the Moonlit Forest zone progression. The full zone order is as follows:
Zone Order | Zone Name | Key Feature |

1 | Tutorial area, basic resources | |
2 | First gate mechanism | |
3 | Crystalith boss, waterfall treasure | |
4 | Post-boss camp | |
5 | Keys, Glintortle boss | |
6 | Bronze Gate | |
7 | Water Wheel puzzle, advanced ores | |
8 | Eldergrain, deep resources | |
9 | Fishing, rare materials | |
10 | Homeward Trail | Ruins, transition to endgame |
11 | Final camp, lower level resources | |
12 | Ruin Guard boss arena |
Environment and Layout
Homeward Trail stands out visually from the lush, organic zones that precede it. The area is dominated by towering stone ruins covered in moss, with massive staircases and wooden scaffolding built into the crumbling walls. These scaffolding structures form the primary traversal paths through the zone, guiding players upward through multiple levels of ancient architecture. The ambient lighting takes on a warmer tone than the blues and purples typical of earlier Moonlit Forest zones, hinting at the zone's proximity to the forest's upper boundary.
The layout is largely linear, funneling players through a series of connected ruin sections. Open courtyards with collapsed pillars give way to narrow corridors of stacked stone, and wooden walkways bridge gaps between the larger ruin platforms. Several tree trunks have grown through the stonework over time, and one of these trunks plays a role in accessing a hidden treasure chest. The overall atmosphere is quieter and more contemplative than the enemy-heavy zones that come before, giving the area a sense of passage and transition.
Camp Facilities
Like every other zone in the Moonlit Forest, Homeward Trail has its own camp that players should activate on their first visit. The camp is located roughly in the middle of the zone, sitting on a flat stone platform among the ruins. Activating the camp unlocks it as a respawn point and a fast travel destination for future visits.
The Homeward Trail camp includes the standard set of facilities found at every Moonlit Forest camp:
Feature | Description |
|---|---|
Tent | for resting and restoring health |
for cooking meals using collected ingredients | |
Worktable | for crafting ammo, tools, and other items |
Moonweaver Crystal | that can be repaired with 5 Fluorite to activate the camp as a fast-travel waypoint |
Activating this camp is particularly important because it is the last convenient rest point before Serenity's Rest and the final boss encounter at Moonlight Meadow. Players should take the time to cook any buffing meals and craft additional Water Arrows and Fire Arrows at the worktable before continuing forward.
Resources
Homeward Trail contains late-game resources found in the deeper sections of the Moonlit Forest:
Resource | Details |
|---|---|
Plainberries | Small leafy plants with red berries, found around the ruins and campsite areas. Easy to overlook due to their small size. |
Echo Beans | Found growing in the ruins section. Used in high-tier cooking recipes. |
Spirit Fruits | Found near the ruins. Rare ingredient for Expert-tier recipes (Mystic Egg, Spirit Salad). |
Dark-colored herb that grows along the base of ruin walls. Used in advanced crafting and cooking. | |
Standard late-game ores | Flamecore, Moonstone, Aurorite, Gold, Primorite, and Oilstone deposits can be found along the ruin walls and in alcoves. These ores also appear in nearby zones. |
All resource nodes in the Moonlit Forest, including those in Homeward Trail, respawn daily. This makes the zone a viable spot for farming Plainberries and Echo Beans on return visits, since both ingredients are rarer than most forageable items found in earlier zones.
Navigation Walkthrough
The zone is structured as a linear path through ancient ruins. Follow these steps to navigate Homeward Trail from entry to exit:
Enter from the Grain Haven / Darkwater Shore direction by passing through the open stone doorway.
Follow the main path into the first ruin courtyard. Collect any ore deposits and forageable plants visible along the walls.
Pass through a large open space with wooden scaffolding and scattered resources. The path trends upward through stacked stone platforms.
Activate the Homeward Trail camp spot roughly halfway through the zone. Repair the Moonweaver Crystal with 5 Fluorite if you have it.
Continue through the ruins, collecting resources along the way. Watch for Echo Beans and Plainberries growing near the base of the walls.
Look for a treasure chest near a tree trunk that has grown through the stone. Shoot the tree trunk with a Water Arrow to unlock the path and claim the chest.
Proceed through the exit door on the right side of the upper ruins to reach Serenity's Rest.
Treasure Chests
Homeward Trail contains three treasure chests spread across the zone. Like all Moonlit Forest chests, they contain a random selection of resources and occasionally a random blueprint.
Chest | Location | How to Access |
|---|---|---|
Chest #38 | South side of Homeward Trail, near the zone entrance | Open area, no special requirements |
Chest #41 | Near the giant gate on the north side of the zone | Accessible from the main path, no special requirements |
Chest #46 | Inside a ruin building, behind a tree trunk | Shoot the tree trunk with a Water Arrow to unlock the path, then cross to claim the chest |
Chest #46 is the most commonly missed chest in this zone. The tree trunk blocking the path blends into the surrounding ruins, so players should keep an eye out for interactable objects as they ascend through the scaffolding. Having a few Water Arrows in your inventory before entering the zone ensures you can grab this chest without backtracking.
Enemies
Homeward Trail contains a Runebird encounter near the transition to Serenity's Rest. This enemy can be avoided by running past if you prefer to conserve ammo. The zone is otherwise lighter on enemies compared to earlier combat-focused zones like Azure Bay or Harvest Yard.
The single Runebird patrols the upper section of the ruins near the zone exit. If you choose to fight it, ranged attacks with a slingshot or bow work best, as the scaffolding provides natural cover for dodging its swooping attacks. Defeating it does not drop unique loot, so skipping the fight is a perfectly valid strategy, especially if you want to save ammunition for the Ruin Guard boss fight that comes after Serenity's Rest.
Tips
Collect Plainberries and Echo Beans when you pass through. These are used in cooking recipes that provide strong buffs for the Ruin Guard fight.
Activate the camp spot. It is a useful respawn and fast-travel point for return visits.
Save your ammo for the Ruin Guard fight ahead. The Runebird near Serenity's Rest can be safely avoided.
On return visits, Homeward Trail is a decent spot for farming Plainberries, which are rarer than most forageable items.
Bring at least 5 Fluorite to repair the Moonweaver Crystal at the camp. This unlocks fast travel to the zone, making future resource runs much faster.
Carry a few Water Arrows before entering the zone so you can unlock the hidden treasure chest behind the tree trunk without needing to backtrack to a worktable.
Use the campfire to cook meals before proceeding. The Ruin Guard is a demanding fight, and entering it with full buffs from cooked food makes a significant difference.
