Overview
The Ruin Guard is the final boss of the Moonlit Forest and the toughest opponent in Starsand Island. It is a large mechanical construct found in Moonlight Meadow, the deepest zone of the dungeon. Defeating it completes the Expert Explorer trial and unlocks the Luna Deer the only free permanent mount in the game.
Unlike the Crystalith and Glintortle, the Ruin Guard only exposes its weak point (the top of its head) during two of its four attacks. The other two attacks require immediate evasion. This fight demands extreme patience. Attack only during safe windows and spend the rest of the time dodging.

How to reach the Ruin Guard
The Ruin Guard is the culmination of the entire Explorer profession quest chain:
Complete the Junior Explorer trial (defeat Crystalith).
Complete the Intermediate Explorer trial (defeat Glintortle).
Complete the Senior Explorer trial, visit Youfang in his temple near Cloudrest Lake. Deliver Eldergrain (found near the Waterwheel in Harvest Yard) and Echobean (found in the Homeward Trail / Grain Haven area), then report to Zephyria.
Begin the Expert Explorer trial. Progress deeper through the Moonlit Forest: Harvest Yard, Darkwater Shore, Grain Haven, Serenity's Rest.
At Serenity's Rest, solve the torch puzzle. Shoot the six lights floating above torches with Fire Arrows.
Cross the bridge to Moonlight Meadow. The Ruin Guard awaits.
Attack patterns
The Ruin Guard has four distinct attacks. Two create safe windows to attack the weak point (head); two require immediate evasion with no safe opening:
Safe windows (attack during these)
Attack | Description | Telegraph | How to exploit |
|---|---|---|---|
Green Charge Vines (BEST OPENING) | Charges green vine energy in both hands. After the animation, damaging vines spawn under your feet. | Longest charge animation of all attacks. Head weak point glows the entire time. | Pump arrows into the head during the entire charge-up. Move immediately when the animation ends, vines spawn at your position. |
Flying Ore | Slams the ground and levitates a rock above its head, then launches it at you. | Rock floats above its head. Head weak point glows for several seconds. | Shoot the head during the charge-up window, then dodge the rock when it launches. |
Flame Beam | Fires a sustained laser/fire beam that slowly rotates toward your position. | Red charge appears over its head. Head weak point is exposed. | Strafe at distance while firing arrows at the head. The beam rotates slowly enough to avoid by strafing. |
Unsafe (dodge these, do not attack)
Attack | Description | Telegraph | How to dodge |
|---|---|---|---|
Green Charge Slice | Pulls green energy into one hand and fires a slicing projectile straight at you. | Green energy visibly gathers in one hand. | Strafe continuously and back away. Do not attempt to fire back. |
Spin Slice (MOST DANGEROUS) | Twists its body and spins across the arena like a blender, lunging at you. | Almost no warning. Watch for the body twist: the instant you see it, run. | Equip Roller Skates and sprint away. Put away your weapon for maximum speed. Never attack during this move. |
Daze mechanic (double damage)
When you deal enough damage to the head during safe windows, the Ruin Guard becomes temporarily dazed. Its head drops to the center of the arena at ground level. During this state:
You deal double damage
The head is at point-blank range, you cannot miss
Dump your strongest charged Bomb Arrows directly into the skull
The daze state is the most important damage window in the entire fight. Save your Bomb Arrows for these moments if possible.
Stun-Lock Rotation
The most efficient strategy against the Ruin Guard is a stun-lock rotation using Bomb Arrows and standard arrows. Rather than firing Bomb Arrows continuously (which wastes expensive ammo), alternate between a single Bomb Arrow for the stun and rapid standard arrows for damage.
Position: Stay at mid-to-long range with a clear line of sight and room to sidestep.
Initial stun: Fire one Bomb Arrow at center mass during a safe window to trigger the stagger state.
Damage phase: Immediately switch to standard arrows and fire rapidly while the Ruin Guard is immobilized.
Re-stun: Before the Ruin Guard fully recovers, fire another Bomb Arrow to restart the stagger cycle.
Reset: If you miss the re-stun window, prioritize dodging and re-establish distance before attempting the cycle again.
By using one Bomb Arrow per cycle and filling the gaps with standard arrows, you conserve expensive ammunition while maintaining consistent damage. With a Crossbow, the rotation is even more effective because the Crossbow has no charge time, letting you rapid-fire during each stagger window.
Applicability: The same Bomb Arrow stun-lock rotation works against the other two large bosses in the game, the Crystalith and the Glintortle. For the Crystalith, use Blast Pellets from the Slingshot instead of Bomb Arrows for the same effect.
Recommended gear
Item | Details |
|---|---|
Weapon | Plume Bow (minimum). The Crossbow is even better, no charge time, the strongest ranged weapon in the game. |
Primary ammo | Bomb Arrows, 20-30 minimum. Save for safe windows and daze phases. |
Backup ammo | 50+ standard arrows for chip damage during safe windows. |
Deploy at the start for passive chip damage. | |
Roller Skates | Equip for faster dodging, especially critical during the Spin Slice attack. |
Healing food | Grilled Chicken Wings (68 HP), Chicken Stewed with Mushrooms (105 Energy + Battle Spirit buff), Lamb Skewers. |
Do not bring: Slingshots with pellets (useless against this boss), Fire Arrows or Water Arrows (these are puzzle tools, not combat weapons. They do not deal extra damage to enemies).
Step-by-step strategy
Deploy Sentry Bots before engaging. They provide passive damage and pressure.
Keep maximum distance at all times. Distance gives you reaction time to identify which attack is coming.
Identify each attack as it starts. For the two unsafe attacks (Green Charge Slice and Spin Slice), focus entirely on dodging.
Attack only during the two safe windows. Green Charge Vines (best opening), Flying Ore, and Flame Beam all expose the head weak point.
Prioritise Green Charge Vines. This has the longest charge animation, giving you time for multiple charged Bomb Arrow headshots.
When the boss is dazed, dump everything. Stop running and fire charged Bomb Arrows directly into the skull at point-blank range. This is your highest-damage moment.
Expect to take hits. Even with careful play, the Spin Slice's minimal telegraph makes it hard to dodge perfectly. Keep healing food on your hotbar.
Be patient. This is the longest fight in the game. Do not get greedy with extra shots. One extra arrow is not worth taking a hit.
Rewards
After defeating the Ruin Guard, it crumbles into a pile of junk and a broken altar appears in the center of the arena. To claim the ultimate reward:
Return to Zephyria to report your victory. She gives you a Prayer item.
Collect 3 Moonstone and 3 Spirit Berry from the Moonlight Meadow area near the boss room.
Return to the broken altar and insert all materials: 3 Moonstone, 3 Spirit Berry, and the Prayer.
The Luna Deer mount appears. It is yours permanently, no housing, feeding, or friendship required.
Reward | Details |
|---|---|
Luna Deer mount | Free permanent mount. No upkeep. Summon anytime via the Garage menu (press R). |
Expert Explorer rank | Final Explorer profession certification. |
Crossbow blueprint | The strongest ranged weapon in the game. Very fast fire rate. Uses the same ammo types as the Bow. |
Moonlight Meadow resources | Access to Moonstones, Spirit Berries, Flamecore ore, Aurorite, and Oilstone deposits in the boss room area. |
Boss comparison
Boss | Location | Difficulty | Weapon | Key mechanic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Moderate | Slingshot (50-60 pellets) | Power Drain phase = double damage on yellow abdomen | ||
Hard | Bow + Bomb Arrows | Shell crystal glows blue after attacks = damage window | ||
Ruin Guard | Very Hard | Head exposed in 2/4 attacks + daze = double damage |
Tips
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Do not retreat | If you leave the arena, the Ruin Guard resets to full health. Commit to the fight. |
The Spin Slice is the most dangerous attack in the game | It has almost no telegraph. The instant you see the body twist, drop your weapon and sprint. Do not try to squeeze in an extra shot. |
Green Charge Vines is your best friend | It has the longest charge animation, giving you time for multiple Bomb Arrow headshots. Learn to recognise it instantly. |
The Crossbow trivialises this fight | If you can acquire it before the fight, the Crossbow's lack of charge time lets you rapid-fire Bomb Arrows into the head during daze phases. |
Roller Skates are essential | Equip them for maximum sprint speed when dodging the Spin Slice. Switch to your weapon only during safe windows. |
Bring Chicken Stewed with Mushrooms | The Battle Spirit buff increases attack damage, and the 105 Energy restoration keeps you going through this long fight. |
Sentry Bots help but will not carry the fight | Use them for passive chip damage. The bulk of your damage must come from precise Bomb Arrow headshots during safe windows and daze phases. |
Shooting the body wastes ammo | Only the head takes meaningful damage. Every shot that misses the head during a safe window is wasted ammo. |
