Overview
Carbon Line is a crafted material in Starsand Island produced at the Spinning Wheel. It is used in bag expansions, weapon crafting, fishing rod upgrades, and several other recipes. Carbon Line is one of the most important intermediate materials in the game because it gates multiple progression milestones, from increasing your inventory capacity to crafting advanced tools and weapons.
How to Craft Carbon Line
Recipe
Crafting Station | Materials | Crafting Fee | Crafting Time |
|---|---|---|---|
4 Fiber + 1 Charcoal | 6 Coins | ~5 seconds |
Place 4 Fiber and 1 Charcoal into the Spinning Wheel and pay a small 6-Coin crafting fee. The process takes roughly five seconds to complete, and you receive one Carbon Line per craft.
Setting Up the Spinning Wheel
If you do not have a Spinning Wheel yet, follow these steps:
Visit Zerine's General Store in Starsand Town and purchase the Spinning Wheel blueprint for 200 Coins. It is available from the start of the game.
Gather 5 Softwood Planks. You can craft Softwood Planks at a Level 1 Worktable using Softwood.
Build the Spinning Wheel at your Worktable. Place it on your farm or inside your home.
Where to Get the Materials
Fiber
Fiber is one of the most common gathering materials in the game. You can collect it by:
Chopping shrubs and bushes with any axe or sickle.
Cutting tall grass found across the island.
Fiber drops in large quantities, so you should always have plenty on hand.
Charcoal
Charcoal is produced at the Charcoal Kiln using Softwood and Fiber. To set up Charcoal production:
Obtain the Equipment Blueprint Pack from the shopping kiosk in Zerine's General Store. This pack is free and includes blueprints for the Charcoal Kiln, Cutter I, Furnace I, and Separator.
Build the Charcoal Kiln at your Worktable using Stones.
Load Softwood and Fiber into the Charcoal Kiln to produce Charcoal.
Softwood is gathered by chopping trees with an axe. Since both Fiber and Softwood are abundant early-game materials, Charcoal production can begin very early in your playthrough.
What Carbon Line Is Used For
Carbon Line appears as a required material in several important crafting recipes and progression systems. Below is a summary of its confirmed uses.
Bag Expansions
One of the most important uses for Carbon Line is expanding your bag (inventory) slots. Bag Expansion Tier 4, which increases your inventory to 70 total slots, requires 6 Carbon Lines alongside other materials like Bronze, Flour, and Flannel.
To expand your bag, open your inventory and click the "Expand" button (or press the View button on a controller). Each expansion tier requires a specific set of materials, and Carbon Line becomes a requirement at the mid-tier expansions.
Weapons
The Plume Bow is a weapon that uses Carbon Line as a high-tension bowstring. During the Intermittent Explorer quest for Zephyria, you will be asked to learn the Plume Bow recipe and craft it. The recipe requires Hardwood Planks and Carbon Line.
Fishing Rods
The Silent Rod is a fishing rod that uses Carbon Line and Charcoal in its recipe. The Carbon Line component makes the rod quieter, which is better for catching shy fish species. This rod is part of the fishing progression system.
Summary of Uses
Item / System | Carbon Line Needed | Category |
|---|---|---|
Bag Expansion Tier 4 (70 slots) | 6 | Inventory |
Plume Bow | Varies | |
Silent Rod | Varies |
Alternative Ways to Get Carbon Line
While the Spinning Wheel is the most reliable source, there are a few other ways to obtain Carbon Line:
Treasure chests: You may occasionally find a small bundle of Carbon Lines in treasure chests scattered across the island.
NPC gifts: Some NPCs will gift Carbon Line once you reach a certain friendship level with them.
Quest rewards: Certain requests and quests reward Carbon Lines upon completion.
Gachapon: The Gachapon machines at Chrono Arcade can randomly dispense crafting materials, though Carbon Line drops are not guaranteed.
None of these alternative sources are consistent enough to replace the Spinning Wheel. For any serious crafting needs, set up a Spinning Wheel and stockpile Fiber and Charcoal.
Other Spinning Wheel Products
The Spinning Wheel can also produce other useful materials besides Carbon Line:
Product | Materials | Used For |
|---|---|---|
Carbon Line | 4 Fiber + 1 Charcoal | Bag expansions, weapons, fishing rods |
Hemp Rope | Fiber-based | Various crafting recipes |
Fishing Line | Fiber-based | Fishing rod crafting |
Tips
Batch craft early. Fiber and Softwood are abundant from the start. Build a Spinning Wheel and a Charcoal Kiln as soon as you can, and start stockpiling Carbon Lines in a chest near your crafting stations.
Do not carry them around. Carbon Lines take up inventory space. Store them in a chest and only grab them when you are ready to use them for a bag expansion or recipe.
Keep a Charcoal surplus. Charcoal is also used in smelting and other recipes. Run your Charcoal Kiln whenever you have excess Softwood to avoid bottlenecks.
The Spinning Wheel pays for itself quickly. At just 200 Coins for the blueprint and 5 Softwood Planks to build, the Spinning Wheel is one of the most cost-effective crafting stations in the game.
