Overview
Some Pokemon in Pokemon Pokopia thrive in dark environments. Dark-type and Ghost-type Pokemon in particular tend to prefer habitats that are shielded from natural sunlight and artificial light sources. Creating a dark habitat requires blocking light and removing anything that emits a glow. Matching a Pokemon's darkness preference raises its Comfort Level, which in turn increases the area's Environment Level.
Methods to Make a Habitat Darker
There are four primary ways to create a dark habitat. Each method blocks or removes light in a different way, and they can be combined for the best results.
Method | How It Works |
|---|---|
Build a House With a Roof | Construct an enclosed structure with walls and a roof. Make sure there is a roof and no windows to completely block sunlight and any other light source. The interior should be at least 3 blocks high. Include a door so you can still enter and exit. |
Build a House Around an Existing Habitat | If you already have a habitat placed outdoors, you can build walls and a roof around it. Enclose the habitat in a structure with no windows and add a door. This converts a bright outdoor habitat into a dark indoor one without needing to move the habitat itself. |
Place Habitats Inside Caves | Caves are naturally dark. Placing habitats inside a cave is the simplest way to provide a dark environment without building anything. Make sure the cave has a full roof with no holes. You can expand caves or create new openings using Rock Smash. |
Remove All Light Sources | Eliminate any items that emit light from the area around the habitat. Glowing Mushrooms, lamps, campfires, torches, streetlights, and candles all produce light that will raise brightness. Pick up or delete these items to keep the area dark. |
Light-Emitting Items to Avoid
When setting up a dark habitat, keep these items away from the area. Even a single light source nearby can raise brightness enough to reduce a dark-preferring Pokemon's comfort.
Glowing Mushrooms (natural or placed)
Lamps (Mushroom Lamp, Shell Lamp, Plain Lamp, Poke Ball Lamp, etc.)
Streetlights (Mushroom Streetlight, Harbor Streetlight, Town Streetlight, etc.)
Campfires (require Burn specialty to light, but still emit light once lit)
Torches and Candles
String Lights, Spotlights, Mirror Balls
Building Tips for Dark Habitats
A minimum internal height of 3 blocks is recommended for enclosed structures. This gives enough room for the habitat and the Pokemon inside.
Always include a door for entry and exit. The door does not let in enough light to affect darkness levels.
Place at least 3 furniture pieces inside the house to satisfy building requirements and increase Pokemon comfort.
Building Kits offer pre-built structures that can be placed quickly. Some building kits include roofs by default, making them convenient for dark habitats.
Do not add window blocks or leave gaps in the walls. Any opening lets light in and reduces darkness.
Pokemon That Prefer Dark Habitats
The following Pokemon prefer dark environments. Check each Pokemon's Pokedex entry under the "Specialties & Likes" tab to confirm its specific preferences.
Dark-Type Pokemon
Pokemon | Type(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Dark | Requires enclosed or cave-based habitats. | |
Dark | Dark-type Eevee evolution. Prefers dark, sheltered environments. | |
Absol | Dark | Thrives in dark, secluded habitats. |
Murkrow, Honchkrow | Flying/Dark | Prefers dark environments. |
Tyranitar | Rock/Dark | Prefers dark, rocky environments. |
Sableye | Ghost/Dark | Best placed in caves. |
Ghost-Type Pokemon
Pokemon | Type(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Poison/Ghost | Requires dark habitats, ideally inside caves or enclosed structures. | |
Misdreavus, Mismagius | Ghost | Prefers dark, enclosed spaces. |
Duskull, Dusclops, Dusknoir | Ghost | Prefers dark habitats. |
Tips
Caves are the fastest way to set up a dark habitat. If no cave is nearby, build an enclosed structure with solid walls, a roof, and no windows.
You can check the area a habitat covers by pressing the Right Stick on your controller. A white outline shows the comfort zone boundary.
If a bright habitat and a dark habitat overlap, the conflicting conditions can lower both Pokemon's comfort. Move them apart or use walls to separate them.
Group all your dark-preferring Pokemon (Ghost-types, Dark-types) in the same enclosed area or cave so you only need to build one dark zone.
Houses and enclosed structures act as environmental buffers. You can build a dark room inside a building even if the surrounding outdoor area is brightly lit.
