Overview
Pokopia features a robust painting system that lets players customize furniture, building blocks, and house exteriors. The system revolves around berries, Pokemon with the Crush specialty, and the unique NPC Smearguru. There are 18 distinct paint colors: 6 base colors produced from berries, 2 rare colors (Black and White) that appear as random bonus drops, and 10 mixed colors created by combining base paints.
How to Unlock Painting
The painting system unlocks when you find Smearguru at Bleak Beach, under a gazebo on the far northern shore. You need Great Trainer Rank to access this area. After meeting Smearguru, bring it a Leppa Berry crushed into Red paint and complete a few introductory tasks. This teaches you the Paint Balloon recipe and gives you access to Smearguru's full painting services.

Base Colors
Base paint colors are produced by giving berries to any Pokemon with the Crush specialty (such as Onix, Pawmo, Geodude, or Tyranitar). Each berry yields 5 bowls of paint. There is also a small random chance to receive a bonus Black or White paint from each crush.
Berry | Primary Color | Bonus Color (Rare) |
|---|---|---|
Red | White | |
Blue | White | |
Green | White | |
Yellow | Black | |
Pink | Black | |
Cyan | Black |
White comes as a rare bonus from Leppa, Chesto, or Lum Berries. Black comes as a rare bonus from Aspear, Pecha, or Rawst Berries. At Palette Town Environment Level 5, White and Black paint can also be purchased directly from the PC Shop.
Mixed Colors
Mixed colors are created by combining two base paints through Paint Balloon crafting at a Workbench or by requesting them from Smearguru. There are 10 mixed colors:
Mixed Color | Formula |
|---|---|
Orange | Red + Yellow |
Purple | Pink + Blue |
Brown | Red + Green |
Magenta | Red + Pink |
Turquoise | Green + Cyan |
Yellow-Green | Green + Yellow |
Dark Purple | Red + Blue |
Dark Blue | Blue + Black |
Light Blue | Blue + White |
Gray | White + Black |
Paint Balloons
Paint Balloons are the primary tool for coloring placed items in the world. They are crafted at a Workbench using bowls of paint. To use a Paint Balloon, carry it in your inventory and toss it at a paintable item. The target item will change to the balloon's color. Clear surrounding objects first for precision, as the balloon can be tricky to aim. Paintable items are identified by a paintbrush icon in the crafting menu.
Smearguru's Services
Smearguru offers three painting services that go beyond what Paint Balloons can do:
Paint individual items: Select an item and choose from available colors and patterns through Smearguru's menu.
Paint house exteriors: Have Smearguru follow you to any house, then select colors for the exterior walls.
Apply patterns: Smearguru can apply special patterns to furniture and blocks. Patterns are discovered on Dream Islands or obtained through Vespiquen's honey trading system.
Almost all building blocks can be painted. Furniture paintability is limited to items marked with the paintbrush icon in the crafting menu.
Tips
Grow a variety of berry trees to keep a steady supply of all 6 base colors.
Black and White are the hardest colors to get early on. Save them for items you really want to customize.
Placing multiple Crush Pokemon in your settlement speeds up paint production since you can give berries to each one.
The Gather Honey specialty (Vespiquen) provides exclusive furniture patterns not available elsewhere.
