Abyss Gears are special enhancement items in Crimson Desert that can be embedded into weapons and armor to boost stats and grant unique abilities. They are one of the most important progression systems in the game, and choosing the right gears for your build can make a huge difference in combat effectiveness. This guide ranks the best abyss gears across all categories, explains where to find each one, and recommends which builds they work best with.
Abyss Gears are obtained primarily from boss defeats and opening Sealed Abyss Artifacts. Once you have a gear, you can embed it into equipment by visiting a Witch NPC. The Witch system unlocks during Chapter 3 when you gain access to the Witch of Humility. You can later upgrade gears and access more advanced crafting after meeting the Witch of Wisdom in Chapter 5.
Every piece of equipment in Crimson Desert (except cloaks, rings, earrings, and necklaces) can have sockets added to it. Each socket holds one Abyss Gear. The number of sockets varies by equipment type:
Equipment Type | Maximum Sockets |
|---|---|
5 | |
5 | |
3 | |
Torso Armor | 3 |
2 | |
Boots | 2 |
Shields / Off-Hand | 2 |
Head Armor | 1 |
Creating sockets costs Silver. The first socket costs 5 Silver, and prices increase with each additional socket (10, 20, 30, and 40 Silver for the second through fifth socket, respectively). Fully socketing a five-slot weapon costs 105 Silver total.
To embed or extract gears, visit any Witch and select the appropriate option. Extracting a gear removes it from the equipment without destroying it, so you can freely experiment with different setups.
Effect: +35% Turning Slash Damage
Source: Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom
Location: Found in a chest inside the Sanctum of Benediction in Hernand
Best For: Any melee build that relies on Turning Slash
Momentum is widely considered the single best offensive Abyss Gear in the game. A flat 35% damage increase to Turning Slash turns an already strong skill into a devastatingly powerful burst tool. This gear shines when fighting bosses since you can unleash Turning Slash on staggered enemies for massive damage. It works well on Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka alike, though Kliff and Oongka benefit the most due to their heavier melee focus. Pair Momentum with Stamina Transference to keep your stamina topped off while chaining attacks.
Effect: Summons a murder of crows to attack nearby enemies on Heavy Attack
Source: Tauria Curved Sword
Location: Drops from defeating Draven the Crowcaller at Crow's Nest during Chapter 5
Best For: AoE-focused melee builds, especially Kliff
Crow's Pursuit triggers a swarm of crows every time you land a Heavy Attack, effectively turning every combo string into AoE damage. This makes it one of the strongest gears for clearing groups of enemies and adds significant extra damage during boss fights where you can land consistent heavy hits. The Blackwing Leather Armor Set pairs perfectly with this gear for a full crow-themed build. Stack it with Destruction and Swift cores to maximize your output.
Effect: Summons a sentry weapon that shoots down enemies from above
Source: Drops from Priscus the Ancient
Location: Spire of Ringing Truth in the Pailune region (optional boss)
Best For: Any melee build looking for passive ranged damage
Ancient Retribution provides free ranged damage while you focus on melee combat. The sentry fires projectiles at enemies automatically, which means you get extra DPS without any additional input. Because Priscus the Ancient is an optional boss in a side area, many players miss this gear entirely on their first playthrough. Seek it out early for a significant power boost. This gear works on all three characters and is especially useful for Oongka, whose slower attacks benefit from the supplementary damage.
Effect: Critical Hit Chance +10
Source: Reward from advanced Sealed Abyss Artifacts
Location: Found in endgame abyss artifact challenges
Best For: Damiane rapier builds and any crit-focused setup
A +10 boost to Critical Hit Chance is enormous, especially for Damiane whose rapier and pistol playstyle revolves around landing many fast hits. More crits mean more burst damage and more frequent proc opportunities for other gear effects. Pair this with Insight I cores in your remaining slots for an even higher crit rate. For Kliff, this gear works well in conjunction with fast one-handed sword builds.
Effect: +4.0% damage to Mighty Foes (bosses)
Source: Wolf's Fang sword
Location: Obtained during Chapter 7
Best For: Boss-focused builds, all characters
Malicebane provides a straightforward percentage damage increase against bosses and other Mighty Foes. While 4% might sound small, it stacks with other damage multipliers and applies to every hit, making it consistently valuable throughout the game. This gear is particularly useful for players who struggle with boss fights or want to speed up boss kill times. Higher tiers (Malicebane II and III) become available later and offer even larger bonuses. Malicebane works well in any build regardless of character choice.
Effect: Spirit Siphon Lv 1 (recover Spirit on hit)
Source: The Grove's Thorn
Location: Obtained after defeating Kearush the Slayer in Hernand Castle during Chapter 5
Best For: Aggressive melee builds that consume Spirit quickly
Spirit Transference lets you recover Spirit with every attack, which means you can keep using skills without constantly running dry. This is one of the best quality-of-life gears in the game because Spirit management is one of the biggest challenges in extended fights. Pair it with Stamina Transference for a self-sustaining offensive playstyle where your attacks fuel your resources. This combination is especially powerful on Kliff, who can chain long combos without needing to back off and regenerate.
Effect: Stamina Siphon Lv 1 (recover Stamina on hit)
Source: Hwando
Location: Lioncrest Manor
Best For: Builds that rely on dodging and blocking
Stamina Transference works the same way as Spirit Transference but for Stamina. Since Stamina governs dodging, blocking, and sprinting, keeping it topped off is critical for survival in tough fights. The combination of both Transference gears on a single weapon creates an incredibly self-sufficient build where attacking is the best form of defense. Oongka benefits heavily from this gear since his heavy weapon attacks drain stamina quickly.
Effect: Food Effect Lv +3 (approximately 15% healing boost from food)
Source: Challenge reward
Location: Complete the Animal Meat Life Challenge (purchase all meat types from the Butchery vendor in Hernand Town)
Best For: Any build, especially for players who rely on food for healing
Gourmet III enhances the healing you receive from all food items by roughly 15%. Since food is one of the primary healing methods in Crimson Desert, this gear provides a massive survivability boost across the entire game. It is especially valuable in boss fights where healing windows are limited and you need maximum value from every food item you consume. The challenge to unlock it is simple: just buy all the different meat types from the Hernand Butchery. This makes it one of the easiest top-tier gears to obtain.
Effect: Defense +3
Source: Crafted at any Witch
Location: Blueprint obtained from Lyselia, the Witch of Humility, at the destroyed bridge in Beighen, Pauline
Best For: Tanky builds, all characters
Fortification I is the most efficient defensive Abyss Gear available. What makes it powerful is that the Defense +3 bonus stacks across every piece of armor and shield you socket it into. If you fill all your armor and shield sockets with Fortification I cores, you can achieve a very high Defense stat that noticeably reduces incoming damage. The crafting materials are affordable (Cockroach x1, Abyss Cell x1, Azurite x1), so you can mass-produce these early on. For players who find themselves dying frequently, stacking Fortification across all armor slots is one of the quickest ways to improve survivability.
Effect: Emits a sonic shockwave that applies Confusion to nearby enemies
Source: The Grove's Thorn (one-handed mace)
Location: Reward from the Demenissian Delegation main quest during Chapter 5
Best For: Crowd control builds, melee fighters who deal with groups
Howling of Chaos provides invaluable crowd control by confusing nearby enemies with a sonic shockwave. Confused enemies stop attacking and wander aimlessly for a short period, giving you breathing room to focus on a single target or heal up. This gear is particularly effective in situations where you are surrounded by multiple enemies, which happens frequently in the open world and during story missions. It can be socketed into melee weapons or shields, making it versatile across different equipment setups.
Abyss Gear | Effect | Source | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
Unleashes a forward blade of wind that hits distant enemies | Sword of the Lord (from Hornsplitter boss) | Ranged poke for melee characters | |
Summons lightning orbs that smite enemies | Unlocked after obtaining Lightning element in the Abyss | Elemental builds, AoE damage | |
Scatters a deadly flurry of reeds at enemies who hit you | Sunset Reed Cloth Gloves (from Reed Devil boss) | Defensive counterattack builds | |
Attack +2 | End of the Shadow, Night of the Silent Banner Pike challenges | Raw damage stacking on any build | |
Insight I | Critical Rate Lv 1 | Bow Aimed at Fate III, Sharpened Spear IV challenges | Crit builds, especially Damiane |
Health +1/sec regeneration | Sword of Trials III, Desperate Rescue challenges | Passive healing for exploration | |
Movement Speed Lv 1 | Sliding Down the Slope challenge | Exploration and traversal builds | |
+10% Silver Gain | Various challenge rewards | Farming and Silver grinding |
Kliff excels with fast weapon swaps and elemental damage chains. Equip Momentum for burst damage on Turning Slash, pair it with Destruction I and Stamina Transference in the remaining weapon slots. For armor, stack Fortification I across all pieces for survivability. If you have a five-socket two-handed weapon, fill it with Momentum, Crow's Pursuit, Destruction I, Stamina Transference, and Spirit Transference for an aggressive all-rounder setup.
Damiane benefits most from attack speed and critical hit chance. Her rapier and pistol playstyle rewards fast, frequent hits. Prioritize Rampaging Insight for the +10 crit chance, add Insight I cores to all weapon and glove slots, and use Swift I for additional attack speed. For armor, Gourmet III ensures your food healing keeps you alive. This setup turns Damiane into a high-speed critical damage machine.
Oongka hits hard but slow, so his best gears amplify raw damage per swing and recover resources. Slot Momentum and Malicebane into your heavy weapon for boss-killing power. Add Stamina Transference to prevent running dry after big combos. For armor, use Fortification I for tankiness and Gourmet III for stronger healing. If you unlock the fire element from the Paloon Tower puzzles, consider adding Volcanic Abyss Gears from the Twilight Cave for fire-imbued heavy attacks.
The most reliable sources of Abyss Gears include:
Boss Drops: Many bosses drop unique weapons with exclusive Abyss Gears already socketed. Defeat the boss, then extract the gear at a Witch to use it in your preferred equipment.
Sealed Abyss Artifacts: These puzzle challenges are scattered across every region and frequently reward Abyss Cores. Completing the challenge unlocks the artifact and grants the core permanently.
Crafting at Witches: Some gears like Fortification I and Destruction I can be crafted at any Witch using Abyss Cells and other materials. Blueprints for crafting are unlocked by finding specific Witches across the world.
Challenge Rewards: Life Challenges and combat challenges often reward utility gears like Gourmet III and Haste I.
Abyssal Enemies: Creatures covered in grass or moss occasionally drop Abyss Gears when defeated. Farm these in areas with high enemy density.
When farming, prioritize Sealed Abyss Artifacts since they guarantee specific rewards and are scattered liberally across the map. Combine artifact hunting with boss fights and commission quests for the most efficient progression.
Never sell Abyss Gears. They are rare and valuable. Even if you do not need a gear right now, you might want it for a different character or build later.
Extract before upgrading equipment. If you plan to switch weapons, always extract your Abyss Gears first. Extraction is free and non-destructive.
Two-handed and ranged weapons are the best targets for offensive gears because they have five sockets, giving you the most room for customization.
Stack defensive gears across multiple armor pieces for the highest impact. Fortification I in every armor slot adds up quickly.
Check weapon drops carefully. Many unique weapons come pre-socketed with powerful gears. Check the gear inside before scrapping any weapon.
Visit all four Witches to unlock the full range of crafting blueprints. The Witch of Humility (Chapter 3), Witch of Wisdom (Chapter 5), and two more found through exploration each offer different recipes.
