Ancient Retribution is a unique active Abyss Gear in Crimson Desert. When triggered during combat, the sentry materializes overhead and fires a barrage of energy bolts at nearby targets, dealing significant Abyss-type damage across a wide area.
The sentry operates autonomously once activated, targeting the closest enemies and tracking their movement for a short duration before dissipating. This makes Ancient Retribution effective against both single targets and groups, since the sentry can redirect its fire between targets as they move. The aerial angle of attack also means the projectiles can hit enemies behind cover or obstacles that would block horizontal attacks.
Because it slots into melee weapon sockets, Ancient Retribution adds ranged damage capability to close-quarters builds. Players who primarily use swords, axes, or other melee weapons gain a valuable tool for softening up enemies before engaging in close combat, or for dealing damage to flying enemies that are difficult to reach with normal melee swings.

Obtained as a reward for defeating Priscus the Ancient during the Spire of Ringing Truth quest. This quest is part of the Aeserion's Scales questline in the Delesyia region. Priscus is one of three Ancient bosses alongside Praevus and Primus.
As a unique Abyss Gear item, Ancient Retribution is not sold by regular Witch merchants. It must be earned through specific encounters or found on unique weapons in the open world. Once obtained, it can be extracted from its host weapon at any Witch and re-socketed into a different weapon of your choice.
As an active Abyss Gear, Ancient Retribution triggers its effect automatically during combat under certain conditions rather than providing a permanent stat bonus. When triggered, it commands a sentry to shoot down enemies from above, dealing damage to enemies in range.
The Priscus fight is primarily won at range using a bow and the Nature's Snare ability. Absorb his laser attacks, knock him down, fill the stun bar, and punish during the stagger window.
Ancient Retribution is particularly strong against groups of weaker enemies, since the sentry can hit multiple targets in rapid succession.
The sentry's overhead firing angle bypasses ground-level obstacles, making it useful in narrow corridors or areas with heavy cover.
Consider pairing with Destruction cores for maximum burst damage when the sentry activates alongside your melee combos.

The following community rating comes from the Abyss Gears Tier List YouTube ranking guide, which scores every Abyss Gear out of 30 across three pillars: damage, usability, and utility. The breakdown below reflects that creator's opinion on Ancient Retribution, not an objective measurement from the game's data files. Treat the scores as a useful reference for build decisions, then test the gear in your own loadout.
Tier breakpoints used by the guide: S covers 25 to 30 points, A covers 20 to 24, B covers 15 to 19, C covers 10 to 14, D covers anything under 10, and F is reserved for the lowest scorers under 8.
Damage: 3 out of 10. The three pillars hit but each pillar's contribution is low, so the total damage on a clean activation still ends up modest.
Usability: 6 out of 10. Triggering off a sprint light attack is straightforward, but pillar placement can be inconsistent depending on positioning.
Utility: 6 out of 10. The Stagger effect is what saves it: the pillars interrupt enemies, which gives it value as a soft control tool even when the numbers are low.
Total: 15 out of 30. B tier.
Ancient Retribution lives in the same activation slot as Hound's Claws and Dark Crescent. Compared to those, it sits in the middle: well above the D-tier Dark Crescent thanks to its stagger, but well below the S-tier Hound's Claws on raw damage and AoE. The guide rates it as a usable B-tier option for builds that want an interrupt tool from the sprint light slot rather than a damage piece. If you are already running another stagger source, this slot is better spent on an S-tier gear.
