Overview
The Blackwing Leather Armor is a Body Armor piece in Crimson Desert. It falls under the Leather armor category and is equipped on the upper torso of the player character. With a base Defense of 12, it is one of the highest-defense leather chest pieces available and is widely considered one of the best early-game armor options in the game.
Body armor provides the highest defense stat among the four Armor types (chest armor, Headgear, Gloves, and Footwear). The Blackwing Leather Armor stands out in its class thanks to the combination of high defense, a Movement Speed bonus, Lightning Resistance, and 3 Abyss Core slots.
In-Game Description
"High-quality leather armor dyed in deep black. The craftsmanship is refined, and it provides solid protection without sacrificing movement speed."
Stats
The Blackwing Leather Armor has the following attributes:

The Lv. 1 Movement Speed bonus keeps the wearer agile in combat, making it easier to dodge attacks and reposition during fights. The Lv. 1 Lightning Resistance provides a small but useful defensive edge against lightning-based enemies and environmental hazards.
How to Obtain
The Blackwing Leather Armor is obtained by defeating Crowcaller, the boss encountered during the Chapter 5 main quest Black and White. Crowcaller is found at the Crow's Nest in the Abyss region. Upon defeating the boss, the armor drops as a quest reward.
This armor is not purchasable from any shop and cannot be crafted at a Blacksmith. It is exclusively a boss drop, which makes it a guaranteed pickup for any player progressing through the main storyline.

Blackwing Set
The Blackwing Leather Armor is part of the Blackwing Set, a themed collection of leather equipment. The full set consists of:
Piece | Slot | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
Part of the Blackwing Set | ||
Defeat Crowcaller (Chapter 5: Black and White) | ||
Treasure chest in Sanctum of Penitence |
Armor sets in Crimson Desert share a visual theme across equipment slots but do not currently provide set bonuses when multiple pieces are worn together. The primary benefit of wearing a matching set is cosmetic. Individual pieces within a set still need to be refined separately to improve their stats.
The Blackwing Leather Gloves have 3 DEF, 13 ATK, Lv. 2 Critical Rate, and Lv. 1 Lightning Resistance. They are found in a treasure chest on the upper floor of the southern ruins of the Sanctum of Penitence. Jump down through a hole in the floor to reach the chest.
Chest Armor Comparison
The following table compares the Blackwing Leather Armor with other notable chest armor pieces available in the early-to-mid game:
DEF | Type | Resistances | How to Get | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
12 | Lv. 1 | Lightning Lv. 1 | 3 | Boss drop (Crowcaller) | ||
9 | Lv. 0 | Lightning Lv. 1 | - | Purchase or find | ||
8 | Plate | Lv. 0 | None | 3 | ||
10 | Plate | Lv. 0 | None (Daze Immunity) | - | Purchase or quest | |
13 | Plate | Lv. 0 | None | 3 | Quest reward or purchase | |
6 | Plate | Lv. 0 | None | - | Starting armor |
At 12 DEF, the Blackwing Leather Armor outclasses every other leather chest armor by a wide margin and even surpasses many plate options. The only readily available chest piece with higher defense is the Solas Plate Armor at 13 DEF. However, the Blackwing Leather Armor compensates with its Movement Speed and Lightning Resistance bonuses, which the Solas armor lacks.
Refinement
The Blackwing Leather Armor supports 10 refinement levels. Refinement is performed at a Blacksmith and increases the armor's Defense with each level. Because this armor is non-unique, it is refined using gathered materials or duplicate armor pieces. Each refinement level requires progressively rarer materials.
See the Refinement System article for a full breakdown of refinement mechanics and material requirements.
Abyss Cores
With 3 Abyss Core slots, the Blackwing Leather Armor accepts a solid number of Abyss Cores. Cores are socketed by visiting a Witch (the first available is Elowen at the Witch's House in The Witchwoods, unlocked after Chapter 5). Recommended core setups for this armor include:
Defense-focused: Slot cores that boost flat Defense or damage reduction to push the armor's already high defense even further.
Mobility build: Pair with cores that improve dodge distance or stamina recovery to take advantage of the built-in Movement Speed bonus.
Elemental resistance: Stack additional Lightning Resistance cores if heading into areas with heavy lightning-element enemies.
Notes and Tips
The Blackwing Leather Armor is guaranteed to drop from Crowcaller during the Chapter 5 storyline. You cannot miss it as long as you complete the quest.
This armor is classified as one of the best early-game armor pieces by most community guides. Its combination of 12 DEF, Movement Speed, Lightning Resistance, and 3 Abyss Core slots is hard to beat until late-game options become available.
The visual design features deep black leather dyeing with refined craftsmanship, making it one of the more visually striking armor sets in the game.
If you want to complete the full Blackwing Set, remember to pick up the Blackwing Leather Gloves from the Sanctum of Penitence. The gloves add 13 ATK and Lv. 2 Critical Rate, making them a strong offensive complement to the defensive chest piece.
