Common Ore Chunks
Guide to Common Ore Chunks and the Ore Analyzer in Starsand Island. Covers how to find ore chunks in the Moonlit Forest, how to build and use the Ore Analyzer, possible outputs for each chunk rarity, and crafting uses for rare materials like Ancient Gear Parts and Spirit Cube Fragments.
Common Ore Chunks
Common Ore Chunks are special mining drops found in the Moonlit Forest that function as loot boxes. They have no use on their own and cannot be sold, but when processed through an Ore Analyzer, they yield random materials ranging from basic Stone to exclusive items like Ancient Gear Parts that cannot be obtained any other way. Ore Chunks come in three rarity tiers (Common, Uncommon, and Rare), each found in progressively deeper sections of the forest and containing different possible outputs.
Ore Chunk Rarity Tiers
All three ore chunk types drop as byproducts when mining ore veins in the Moonlit Forest. The deeper you explore, the higher the rarity of chunks you encounter:
Chunk Type | Where Found | Notable Outputs |
|---|---|---|
Common Ore Chunk | Entrance and early forest (Copper, Tin, Quartz, Fluorite veins) | Stone, Copper, Tin, Iron, Ancient Gear Parts |
Uncommon Ore Chunk | Mid-forest (Iron, Gold, Primorite, Aurorite veins) and Soil Mounds along Spiritshade River | Iron, Magnetite, Spirit Cube Fragments |
Rare Ore Chunk | Deepest forest sections (Moonstone, Flamecore, Oilstone veins) | Spirit Cube Fragments (higher chance), advanced materials |
Chunks drop randomly when you break ore veins with a pickaxe. The drop is not guaranteed on every swing; expect to mine several veins before collecting a handful of chunks. Lower-rarity veins like Copper and Tin have the best chance to drop Common Ore Chunks.
The Ore Analyzer
The Ore Analyzer is a crafting station that processes ore chunks into usable materials. It is introduced during the "Become a Junior Crafter" quest line and becomes a central part of the mining workflow from that point forward.
How to Unlock
You unlock the Ore Analyzer blueprint by progressing through the Crafter profession under Zerine (the General Store NPC). Specifically, you must:
Complete the Crafter apprenticeship with Zerine
Begin the "Become a Junior Crafter" quest chain
The quest directly instructs you to craft an Ore Analyzer as one of its objectives
Crafting Recipe
Material | Quantity | Source |
|---|---|---|
Hardwood | 8 | Chopping hardwood trees |
Copper Sheet | 2 | Cutter (1 Copper Ingot + 1 Copper per sheet) |
Each Copper Sheet requires a Copper Ingot (4 Copper + 1 Charcoal at the Furnace) plus 1 additional Copper at the Cutter. In total, you need 10 Copper and 2 Charcoal to produce the two sheets, plus 8 Hardwood for the main recipe. Craft the Ore Analyzer at a Worktable (Tier I or above).
How to Use
Place the Ore Analyzer on your property like furniture
Interact with it to open the processing menu
Insert ore chunks of any rarity
Start the process and wait for the processing time to finish
Return to the Ore Analyzer to claim your output materials
Processing takes a set amount of time per chunk. You can leave and handle other tasks while the Analyzer runs. Note that the Ore Analyzer cannot be moved while an active quest step requires you to analyze ore; completing that step restores the ability to relocate it.
Common Ore Chunk Outputs
When you process Common Ore Chunks through the Analyzer, the output is randomized. Possible results include:
Output | Rarity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Stone | Common | Low-value; most frequent output |
Copper | Common | Mid-tier; useful for early crafting |
Tin | Common | Mid-tier; used in bronze alloys |
Iron | Uncommon | Estimated 15-20% chance per chunk |
Ancient Gear Parts | Rare | Exclusive to Ore Analyzer; cannot be obtained elsewhere |
Ancient Gear Parts are the standout reward from Common Ore Chunks. These parts are exclusive to the Ore Analyzer mechanic and cannot be mined, purchased, or crafted through any other method. They are required for several important recipes, most notably the Verdant Breeze Rollerblades (the Junior Crafter quest reward item) and various advanced decorative items.
Uncommon and Rare Ore Chunk Outputs
Higher-tier chunks found deeper in the forest yield more valuable materials:
Uncommon Ore Chunk Outputs:
Output | Notes |
|---|---|
Iron | Decent chance; useful for mid-game crafting |
Magnetite | Crafted into Magnets for Spirit Cube II and Energy Converter recipes |
Spirit Cube Fragments | Rare drop; essential for high-end technology crafting |
Rare Ore Chunk Outputs:
Output | Notes |
|---|---|
Spirit Cube Fragments | Higher chance than Uncommon chunks; can sometimes yield multiple fragments |
Advanced materials | Various high-tier resources used in endgame crafting |
Spirit Cube Fragments are the most sought-after output from Uncommon and Rare chunks. They are used in a tiered crafting chain:
Item | Recipe | Crafting Station |
|---|---|---|
Spirit Cube I | 4 Spirit Cube Fragments + 2 Bronze | Worktable II |
Spirit Cube II | 2 Spirit Cube I + 1 Magnet | Worktable II |
Spirit Cube III | 2 Spirit Cube II + 2 Alloy | Worktable III |
Spirit Cubes are used to craft Realm Boxes, Robot Terminals, Teleporters, and other high-end technology items. Building even a single Spirit Cube III requires 16 Spirit Cube Fragments total, making chunk farming a significant time investment.
Where to Find Ore Chunks
All ore chunks drop exclusively in the Moonlit Forest. The forest is divided into sections with increasing difficulty and ore rarity:
Forest Section | Available Ores | Chunk Type |
|---|---|---|
Entrance / Evernight Forest | Copper, Tin, Quartz, Fluorite | Common |
Gate of Life Area | Copper (deeper deposits) | Common |
Spiritshade River | Iron, Gold, Primorite, Aurorite | Uncommon |
Azure Bay | Iron, advanced ores, Soil Mounds | Uncommon |
Mural Valley / Harvest Yard | Magnetite deposits, Oilstone | Uncommon |
Deepest Sections (Ruins Area) | Moonstone, Aurorite, Flamecore, Oilstone | Rare |
Soil Mounds are a particularly valuable source for Uncommon Ore Chunks. These dirt mounds are scattered along the banks of Spiritshade River and in Azure Bay. Digging them up with your pickaxe yields Uncommon Ore Chunks more reliably than mining ore veins. Prioritize Soil Mounds when farming for Spirit Cube Fragments.
Mining Tool Progression
Different pickaxe tiers are required to mine ores at various depths:
Tool | Materials | What It Can Mine |
|---|---|---|
Stone Pickaxe | 2 Softwood + 2 Stone (given by Solara during tutorial) | Basic ores (Copper, Tin, Fluorite, Quartz) |
Impulse Pickaxe | 10 Copper + 10 Fluorite + 5 Softwood + 5 Quartz + 1 Stone Pickaxe (blueprint: 500 Coins) | Iron and mid-tier ores |
Impact Hammer | 4 Hardwood Planks + 4 Iron Sheets + 2 Radiant Crystals + 3 Bronze + 1 Impulse Pickaxe (blueprint: 2,500 Coins) | Gold, Primorite, all ores; mines area-of-effect |
The Impact Hammer is essential for efficient chunk farming. It mines multiple nodes in an area-of-effect pattern and is the only tool capable of breaking advanced ore deposits like Primorite. Its blueprint unlocks at Zerine's General Store after reaching Junior Crafter rank.
The Junior Crafter Quest (Introduction to Ore Analyzer)
The "Become a Junior Crafter" quest is where you first encounter the Ore Analyzer. The quest steps are:
Craft 2 Copper Sheets at the Cutter (1 Copper Ingot + 1 Copper each)
Craft an Ore Analyzer at the Worktable (2 Copper Sheets + 8 Hardwood)
Collect 5 Common Ore Chunks in the Moonlit Forest
Process the chunks to obtain 5 Ancient Gear Parts
Craft 2 Bronze and 3 Radiant Core at the Furnace
Craft Verdant Breeze Rollerblades (2 Bronze + 3 Radiant Core + 5 Ancient Gear Parts)
Show the completed rollerblades to Zerine
Rewards: 1,000 Coins, 70 Starsand Points, 50 Zerine Affection, and additional blueprints unlocked at the General Store (including the Impact Hammer blueprint).
Tips
Farm in bulk. Chunks are random drops, so collect as many as you can in a single trip before returning to the Analyzer. Bring stamina-restoring meals and food to maximize mining time.
Prioritize Soil Mounds for Uncommon chunks. Mining ore veins for Uncommon Ore Chunks is less reliable than digging Soil Mounds along Spiritshade River and in Azure Bay.
Don't sell ore chunks. They look like junk items at first glance, but their Analyzer outputs (especially Ancient Gear Parts and Spirit Cube Fragments) are some of the most valuable materials in the game.
Upgrade your pickaxe. The Impact Hammer's area-of-effect mining dramatically increases your chunk yield per trip.
Check quest requirements. Some quests require you to use the Ore Analyzer. While those quests are active, the Analyzer cannot be moved, so place it in a permanent spot on your farm.
