Flawed Chests
Flawed Chests are special nautical-themed container items in Starsand Island that function differently from the regular treasure chests scattered across the overworld. Unlike standard chests that you walk up to and open in place, Flawed Chests exist as inventory items that you acquire through fishing, treasure maps, or as loot inside other chests. When used from your bag, a Flawed Chest either becomes a placeable 32-slot storage container (equivalent to a Storage Box II) or yields a Coin reward. Their storage capacity alone makes them valuable finds, especially in the early and mid-game before you can craft higher-tier storage.
How to Obtain Flawed Chests
There are three confirmed ways to find Flawed Chests:
Fishing
Flawed Chests can be reeled in while fishing at any fishing spot. They appear as a catch alongside regular fish. The Fisher's Gain perk from the Angler profession significantly increases the chance of hooking a treasure chest while fishing:
Perk Level | Treasure Chest Chance |
|---|---|
Level 1 | Small chance to reel in a treasure chest |
Level 2 | Moderate chance |
Level 3 | Great chance |
Fisher's Gain is unlocked through the Workpedia app by spending Starsand Points. If you want a steady supply of Flawed Chests, investing in this perk is the most reliable approach. Fishing is the only repeatable, on-demand method for obtaining them.
Treasure Maps
Flawed Chests can be found by following treasure maps obtained in the Moonlit Forest. When you equip a treasure map, a golden directional arrow appears on screen guiding you to the buried treasure location. Dig at the indicated spot to unearth the chest. Treasure maps can also be generated periodically by the World Tree, a craftable farm item that produces treasure chests and maps over time.
Inside Other Treasure Chests
Flawed Chests occasionally appear as loot inside regular overworld treasure chests. This means you might find one while opening a standard chest during exploration, though the drop is not guaranteed.
How to Open a Flawed Chest
Flawed Chests cannot be placed directly when first obtained. You must open them from your inventory:
Open your bag (press B)
Right-click on the Flawed Chest
Select "Use" from the context menu
Using a Flawed Chest produces one of two outcomes:
Outcome | Description |
|---|---|
Placeable Storage Chest | The Flawed Chest converts into a furniture item you can place in your home. It functions as a 32-slot storage container, equivalent to a Storage Box II. |
Coins | The chest yields a Coin reward instead of becoming storage. |
Do not sell Flawed Chests to vendors. The sale price is significantly lower than the value of what you receive by using them. A 32-slot storage container is worth far more than the vendor price, and even the Coin outcome typically exceeds the sell value.
Storage Comparison
Flawed Chests that convert into storage containers hold 32 items, which places them at the same tier as a crafted Storage Box II:
Storage Type | Slots | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
Destroyed Chest | Tier 1 capacity | Dredging in lakes |
Flawed Chest | 32 slots (Tier 2) | Fishing, treasure maps, chest loot |
Storage Box I | 16 slots | Crafted at Worktable |
Storage Box II | 32 slots | Crafted at Worktable (requires more materials) |
In the early game, when crafting materials for Storage Box II are scarce, Flawed Chests from fishing provide a shortcut to high-capacity storage. Their nautical design also offers a visual alternative to the standard wooden storage boxes.
Chest Types in Starsand Island
Starsand Island has several distinct chest types. Understanding the differences helps you know what to expect when exploring:
Chest Type | Appearance | Where Found | How to Open |
|---|---|---|---|
Regular Treasure Chest | Brown with golden star lock | Overworld locations, beaches, landmarks | Walk up and interact |
Secret Chest | Grey and blue coloring | Hidden locations requiring exploration | Walk up and interact |
Acorn Chest | Acorn-shaped | Moonlit Forest | Walk up and interact |
Vine Chest | Green vine wrapped, no golden star | Moonlit Forest | Walk up and interact |
Flawed Chest | Nautical-themed | Inventory item (fishing, maps, loot) | Right-click in bag, select Use |
Destroyed Chest | Damaged/decayed appearance | Dredging in lakes | Right-click in bag, select Use |
Related: Destroyed Chests
A related but inferior item is the Destroyed Chest, which can be found by dredging in lakes (not ocean fishing). Destroyed Chests function as Tier 1 storage with fewer slots than the Flawed Chest. If you are specifically farming for storage containers through fishing, ocean and river spots are more likely to yield the superior Flawed Chest.
Tips
Invest in Fisher's Gain early. The Angler profession perk is the most reliable way to farm Flawed Chests. Even Level 1 provides a noticeable increase in treasure chest catches.
Always Use, never sell. The 32-slot storage or Coin reward from using the chest is always worth more than the vendor sell price.
Craft a World Tree. The World Tree periodically generates treasure maps and chests, providing a passive source of Flawed Chests without active fishing.
Fish at any location. Flawed Chests are not restricted to a specific fishing spot. Cast your line anywhere you can fish, and the Fisher's Gain perk applies universally.
Stock up on storage. In the early game, Flawed Chests are one of the fastest ways to expand your storage capacity before you can craft Storage Box II.
