General
What is Pokemon Pokopia?
Pokopia is a spin-off Pokemon game that combines Pokemon collection with life-simulation and settlement-building mechanics. Players take the role of Ditto, who has transformed into a human form and awakens in a rundown world. The goal is to restore five regions to attract Pokemon and eventually bring humans back to the area. The game was co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force studio.
Is there combat in Pokopia?
No. Pokopia has no combat system at all. There are no trainer battles, no gyms, no HP bars, and no experience points from fighting. Instead, gameplay revolves around building, crafting, exploring, and befriending Pokemon through habitats and social interaction.
Can Pokemon evolve?
No. Pokemon do not evolve in Pokopia. This is a deliberate design choice. Evolved forms like Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur exist as separate species with their own Pokedex entries. They can be encountered and befriended independently through more advanced habitats. For example, you do not level up Charmander into Charmeleon; instead, you build a different habitat to attract Charmeleon as its own Pokemon.
Are there shiny Pokemon?
No. You cannot get shiny Pokemon in Pokopia. There is only one version of each Pokemon species. However, the game does feature unique character variants for certain Pokemon that serve as named NPCs (like Peakychu, Mosslax, and Smearguru), which have their own distinct appearances.
How many Pokemon are in the game?
Pokopia features around 300 Pokemon drawn from all generations of the franchise. Additional Pokemon are being added through limited-time events and future content updates. The full list is tracked in the Pokedex.
How long does it take to beat?
Goal | Approximate Time |
|---|---|
Main story (credits) | 20 to 40 hours |
Story plus side content | 35 to 40 hours |
Full completion (all Pokemon, relics, furniture, habitats) | 100+ hours |
Platform and Multiplayer
Can I play Pokopia on the original Nintendo Switch?
No. Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. It cannot be purchased or played directly on the original Switch (Switch 1). However, there is one exception: Switch 1 owners can join a limited local co-op session through the Game Share feature if someone nearby owns a Switch 2 with the game. Game Share on Switch 1 is restricted to the Palette Town region only, supports only 2 players, is local-only (no online), and guests cannot use the workbench to craft.
How does multiplayer work?
Mode | Players | Connection | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
Game Share (Local) | 2 | Local wireless | A second player joins the host's island. Both can explore and build together. |
Game Share (Online) | 2 | Internet (Switch 2 only) | Same as local Game Share but over the internet. Requires Nintendo Switch Online. |
Cloud Islands | Up to 4 | Internet | Special multiplayer zones with unique resources and cooperative challenges. Anyone with the island key code can join. |
A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online Game Share and Cloud Islands. Local multiplayer does not require an internet connection or subscription.
What is Game Share?
Game Share is Pokopia's co-op feature where a second player can join your island using their own Switch 2 console (or a Switch 1 for limited local play). The host player's save data is used, and both players can explore, gather, and build together. Online Game Share was added for the Switch 2 version, while the original Switch only supports local Game Share.
Gameplay Mechanics
Does the game use real-time?
Yes. Pokopia uses the Switch 2's system clock, similar to Animal Crossing. The game features a real-time day/night cycle with four time periods (Morning, Daytime, Evening, Night), and some Pokemon only appear during specific times of day. The seasons change every three months, affecting which Pokemon spawn and what weekly events are available. A new in-game day starts at 5:00 AM local time.
Can I change the time of day?
Yes. You can change the Switch 2's system clock in the console settings to switch between day and night. The game does not penalize time manipulation. However, changing the clock can affect building completion timers, daily challenge resets, and event availability, so use caution.
What is PP and how do I restore it?
PP (Power Points) is your energy meter, shown as a blue curved bar at the bottom-right of the screen. Every move Ditto uses drains PP. When it runs out, Ditto enters a fatigue state. PP can be restored by:
Eating berries (Leppa Berries are the most common and effective)
Eating carrots (pull them from the ground)
Eating cooked meals (full restore plus move power-up)
Using the Pokemon Center healing machine (free, unlimited)
Resting in chairs or beds (very slow recovery)
Buying PP Up from the PC Shop to permanently increase the maximum
What is Environment Level?
Environment Level is a per-area score (1 through 5+) measuring the health and development of each region. Raise it by improving Pokemon comfort, befriending new Pokemon, building houses, completing requests, and tidying up the landscape. Higher Environment Levels unlock new shop items, challenges, Pokemon species, and the ability to rebuild the Pokemon Center. Reaching Level 5 in all areas is required to see the game's ending. See the Achievements and Milestones article for full details.
How does cooking work?
Cooking requires a recipe and a cooking station (chopping board, bread oven, frying pan, or cooking pot). Press A near the station to open the cooking menu, add a base ingredient (leaf for salad, water for soup, etc.), then fill the remaining slots with other ingredients. Cooked meals fully restore PP and provide a temporary power-up to a specific move. Chef Dente (a Greedent) teaches recipes and can host feasts for large-scale cooking.
What are Mystery Gifts?
Mystery Gifts are free items (furniture, food, materials) distributed to players through the Pokemon Center Terminal. Select "Mystery Gifts," then "Get via Internet" or "Get with Code/Password" to claim them. You need to have access to the Pokemon Center PC (about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours into the game) and an internet connection. Check the Version History and Updates page for the current list of available Mystery Gifts.
What does Mosslax do?
Mosslax (a Snorlax) has the Eat specialty. Once befriended, you can feed it one food item per day. The flavor of the food determines the buff it provides for that day:
Flavor | Daily Buff |
|---|---|
Spicy | Boosts Pokemon spawn rates |
Sweet | Increases artifact discovery rate |
Feed Mosslax daily for consistent bonuses. See the NPCs and Villagers article for more details on Mosslax and other named characters.
What should I buy first from the PC Shop?
Packing Tips: Rookie (100 Life Coins): Adds 10 inventory slots. This is the single most impactful early purchase.
PP Up: Permanently increases maximum PP. Buy whenever available.
Recipes and building kits after the quality-of-life upgrades are secured.
What are Lost Relics?
Lost Relics and Ancient Artifacts are excavated from digging spots found throughout the world. Bring them to Professor Tangrowth to have them appraised, then trade appraised relics to Gimmighoul for exclusive furniture items. Collecting all relics is one of the postgame completion goals.
