Overview
After cleansing sanctums during the Witch quest lines in Crimson Desert, each sanctum contains a hidden extra puzzle at its final area. These secret puzzles are completely unmarked on the map. There is no quest marker, no indicator, and no NPC that tells you about them. They are designed as bonus challenges for players who take the time to revisit and explore cleansed sanctums thoroughly.
Each cleansed sanctum has the same type of end puzzle: a Fusion Reactor Core that must be found, stored in the Kuku Pot using the Axiom Force, transported to the generator, and slotted into position using Force Palm. Completing these hidden puzzles rewards you with cores that upgrade your Kuku Pot, unlocking the ability to craft new items, weapons, and armor through Kuku blueprints.
Prerequisites
Complete Chapter 5 or later. Sanctum cleansing quests become available from Chapter 5 onward as part of the Witch faction quest lines. You cannot cleanse a sanctum unless you have met the witch it belongs to.
Cleanse the sanctum first. The secret puzzles only become accessible after a sanctum has been fully cleansed. You must defeat all enemies and complete the primary puzzle (restoring the generator) before the hidden puzzle area opens up.
Axiom Force abilities required. You need Axiom Force, Force Palm, and in some cases Aerial Force Palm to interact with the Fusion Reactor Cores. These abilities are learned during the main story.
Kuku Pot required. The Kuku Pot is obtained during the "Mysterious Pot" quest in Chapter 4 at the Kilnden Workshop. You need it to seal and transport Fusion Reactor Cores between locations.
How the Secret Puzzles Work
Every cleansed sanctum follows the same basic pattern for its hidden puzzle. After the sanctum is cleansed and the generator is restored, a previously inaccessible area in the final section of the sanctum becomes reachable. This area contains a hidden Fusion Reactor Core.
Return to the cleansed sanctum. Travel back to a sanctum you have already cleansed. The enemies will not respawn.
Explore the final area thoroughly. Look for hidden passages, secret walls, or environmental clues. Some entrances are behind breakable walls, while others require abilities like Nature's Grasp to reveal.
Find the hidden Fusion Reactor Core. The core is typically tucked away in a secret room or behind an environmental obstacle. Use Axiom Force to grab it.
Seal the core in your Kuku Pot. Activate Axiom Force on the core to trigger a quick-time event that stores it inside your Kuku Pot for transport.
Slot the core into the generator. Carry the core to the empty battery slot on the sanctum's generator. Use Force Palm (or Aerial Force Palm for elevated slots) to punch the core into position. Green leaves floating around the slot confirm correct placement.
Sanctum Locations by Witch
There are 16 sanctums spread across the world of Crimson Desert, each assigned to one of four witches. You must meet the corresponding witch before you can cleanse her sanctums. The table below lists all sanctums organized by their assigned witch.
Witch of Wisdom (Elowen)
Elowen is found in the Hernand region, tied up in a house in the Witchwoods southeast of the region. Rescue her to unlock her faction quest.
Sanctum | Region | Notable Feature |
|---|---|---|
Hernand (south of Scholastone) | Boss fight: Antumbra's Sword; cube hidden in clay pots | |
Hernand (south of Unicorn Cliff, Grace Estate) | Burn vines with flame attack; collapse unstable ground on north side | |
Hernand (southeast, past Goldleaf Trading Post) | Pillar piece atop tower via staircase | |
Light lantern on south tower to access sphere |
Witch of Kindness (Bari)
Bari is first encountered freezing under a tent west of Pailune. Light the nearby lantern to warm her. Her true lair is a floating cabin in Crimson Lake within the Silver Wolf Mountains.
Sanctum | Region | Notable Feature |
|---|---|---|
Pailune (east of Silver Wolf Mountain) | Drain underwater barrier with heavy/light combo | |
Pailune (southwest of city) | Located east of the Witch's House | |
Hernand (southeast of Stormtalon Ridge) | Two Fusion Reactor Cores required (LII-VI and IV) | |
Hernand (southwest of Haunted Hill) | Standard generator puzzle |
Witch of Humility (Lyselia)
Lyselia first appears hanging off a ruined bridge in Beighen during Chapter 7. Her true lair is a cave in Serpent Marsh marked with hanging ribbons.
Sanctum | Region | Notable Feature |
|---|---|---|
Demeniss (west of Dewhaven) | Standard generator puzzle | |
Delesyia (Mount Benus, Blue Thicket) | Secret wall opened with Nature's Grasp in south area | |
Delesyia (The Grey Forest) | Standard generator puzzle | |
Standard generator puzzle |
Witch of Strength (Areciel)
Areciel first appears as a child near a shed north of Tashkalp. Give her a copper coin to begin her quest line. Her true lair is a house on a cliff near Urdavah.
Sanctum | Region | Notable Feature |
|---|---|---|
Azerian Estate (east of Drakesfall Gorge) | Multiple Fusion Reactor Cores needed | |
Tashkalp (northeast of Drywind Valley) | Standard generator puzzle | |
Serpent Marsh (northeast) | Standard generator puzzle |
The 16th sanctum, the Cloister of Ruination (also called the Sanctum of Mortification), is a main-story-only sanctum tied to the Byron Estate and does not follow the same secret puzzle pattern as the other 15.
Rewards
Completing the secret puzzles in cleansed sanctums rewards cores that upgrade the Kuku Pot. As the Kuku Pot is upgraded, it unlocks the ability to craft new Kuku weapons, armor, and equipment through blueprints. The specific rewards vary depending on which witch's sanctums you complete.
Known Blueprint Rewards by Sanctum
Sanctum | Witch | Rewards |
|---|---|---|
Bari (Kindness) | Blueprint II: Kuku Flame-Resistant Armor, Blueprint II: Kuku Frostspitter | |
Elowen (Wisdom) | Kuku Lightning Spear, Kuku Bird Boltspitter Blueprints | |
Elowen (Wisdom) | Kuku Marni Laser Helm Blueprint | |
Elowen (Wisdom) | Kuku Pack Blueprint | |
Elowen (Wisdom) | ||
Bari (Kindness) | Blueprint II: High Mobility A.T.A.G, Blueprint II: Kuku Flame Spear |
Completing all sanctums for a given witch (four for most witches, three for Areciel) earns you a Witch's Token. Collecting all tokens from every witch unlocks access to the hidden Wayward Woods Witch Hideout, where you can meet the fifth witch, the White Crow, and receive additional rewards.
Detailed Dial Puzzle Walkthrough
After cleansing a sanctum, approach the dial located at the center of the sanctum platform. Pull up Blinding Flash while looking at the dial. Then activate Focus Light and the dial will start spinning.
Hold down Focus Light each time an unlit notch reaches the top of the dial, then release quickly. The goal is to light up every notch on the dial by timing your Focus Light activations correctly. Each successful activation illuminates one notch. Missing the timing or releasing too late will not light the notch, and you will need to wait for it to come around again.
After completing the puzzle (all notches lit), a short cutscene plays and a powerful item spawns at the top of the sanctum. These rare items are used for Cuckoo item crafting and enhancement at Grimnir, enabling you to create some of the best gear in the game.
Sanctum Puzzle Tips
Do the puzzle at night. The dial notches are far more visible in darkness. During the day, sunlight washes out the faint glow of unlit notches, making it difficult to tell which ones still need to be activated.
Complete the puzzle immediately after cleansing. Rather than cleansing a sanctum and coming back later, do the dial puzzle right away while you are already there. This saves travel time and ensures you do not forget which sanctums still have uncompleted puzzles.
Watch the spin speed. The dial spins at a constant rate, so once you learn the rhythm for one sanctum, the timing is the same at every other sanctum in the game.
Cleansing Step After Liberation
Liberating a sanctum by locating pillar tops, placing them on their broken pillars, and activating the generator is only the first half of the process. A second, easily missed phase is the actual cleansing, which is where the sanctum's unique Core reward comes from. Many players assume the sanctum is fully complete once the witch cutscene plays after liberation and move on without ever triggering this step.
Check for a Floating Antenna
After the liberation cutscene ends, walk back up to the center of the sanctum and look at the top of the main generator. If a thin floating antenna is hovering above the central refracting gem, the sanctum still has a cleansing phase waiting. If no antenna is present, the sanctum is already fully cleansed and there is nothing more to do at that site. The antenna is small and easy to miss against bright sky boxes, so make it a habit to check every sanctum you liberate.
Draw Blinding Flash and Press Focus Light
With the antenna confirmed, draw Blinding Flash and aim at the refracting gem on the central generator. Then press Focus Light to channel the sustained beam into the gem. The button for Focus Light is LB on a controller or Control on PC, the same input you use for other Blinding Flash puzzles such as reading light-reflection dials and charging Abyss Devices. When the beam connects with the gem, a ring of smaller nodes around the generator lights up and begins to flash a rhythm.
Copy the Morse-Code Rhythm
The lit nodes flash a Morse-code-style pattern made up of short taps and longer holds. Your job is to copy the pattern back by touching the matching positions on the ring. Each node you interact with counts as either a tap (a single quick press and release) or a hold (a press that you release when a faint audio cue sounds). The game does not display a visible progress bar or timer during the sequence, so the audio cue is the only reliable signal for when to let go of a hold.
Taps are instant presses. Do not hold your finger down on them, even for a moment. Press and release as quickly as possible.
Holds end on a soft audio ping. The ping is subtle, so play with game sound effects loud enough to hear it clearly over background music.
Getting any step wrong resets the entire puzzle back to the start, so the first attempt almost always fails while you learn the timing.
The timing window is tight. Expect to retry several times at the first sanctum before the input rhythm clicks.
Reward: Fragment and Core
On a successful pattern, the center wheel on the generator locks into place, the floating antenna descends into the sanctum core, and a glowing fragment pops out. Hook the fragment with the Axiom Grapple and seal it. The sanctum then hands you a Core item tied specifically to that sanctum. The very first sanctum, the Sanctum of Temperance, drops the Core of Temperance, which feeds Kuku Pot recipes and unlocks additional crafting options at the pot. Every cleansed sanctum follows the same pattern and yields its own named Core.
Because the Core is the main reason to do this second phase, skipping the cleansing step means skipping the Kuku Pot progression path entirely for that sanctum. If you already left a liberated sanctum without doing the Morse puzzle, return at any time. The antenna and refracting gem remain active until you complete the cleansing.
Secret Puzzle Tips
Revisit cleansed sanctums carefully. The secret puzzles are in areas you may not have explored during the initial cleansing. Take time to walk around the entire final chamber and look for hidden passages, breakable walls, or unusual environmental details.
Use Nature's Grasp on suspicious walls. Several sanctums hide their secret areas behind walls that can only be opened with Nature's Grasp (Circle + Triangle). The Sanctum of Veneration is a confirmed example where a brick wall in the south area opens to reveal a hidden Fusion Reactor Core.
Look for visual clues. Hidden entrances often have subtle visual differences from the surrounding architecture, such as different brick patterns, slightly recessed walls, or unusual vegetation growth near the opening.
Use Focus to spot cores. Activate Focus (L3+R3) to highlight interactable objects in the environment. Fusion Reactor Cores glow when Focus is active, making them easier to spot in dark or cluttered rooms.
Green leaves confirm correct placement. When you successfully slot a Fusion Reactor Core into its generator position, green leaves will float around the slot. If you do not see the leaves, the core is not properly seated and you should try Force Palm again.
Bring the Kuku Pot. You cannot complete the secret puzzles without the Kuku Pot. If you have not obtained it yet, complete the "Mysterious Pot" quest in Chapter 4 at the Kilnden Workshop first.
Use Blinding Flash for hidden walls. Some hidden areas in sanctums are behind vine-covered or destructible walls. The Blinding Flash ability (L1+R1+L1) can destroy certain environmental obstacles that block access to secret rooms.
