Overview

Recipes in Crimson Desert are found throughout Pywel in the form of scrolls, books, and parchments. When you pick one up, equip it from your inventory and shine your Lantern on the pages. The recipe permanently registers in your Knowledge menu, and the physical item can then be sold or discarded safely. Recipes never need to be re-learned once registered.

There are three main ways to acquire new recipes:

• Found in the world - Recipe books sit on tables, shelves, and barrels inside buildings, caves, and enemy camps across Pywel. Always check interiors when entering a new town or point of interest.

• Purchased from vendors - Innkeepers, shopkeepers, and specialty vendors sell cooking and alchemy recipes. Inns are the single richest source of purchasable recipes.

• Improvisation - At any cooking station, select the Improvise option and throw different ingredients into the grill or pot. If the combination produces a valid dish, cooking it successfully three times adds the recipe to your permanent collection.

Recipes are also occasionally rewarded by faction quests and can be unlocked through Research Institute projects at Pororin.

Cooking Station Types

Different recipes require different cooking stations. Bonfires and campfires are scattered across Pywel and appear inside or just outside most cities. Once you unlock Greymane Camp during Chapter 3 (Homestead), you also gain your own permanent cooking fire.

Meal Quality Tiers

Cooked food comes in four quality tiers. The tier is determined by the ingredient quality and quantity you use. Higher-tier versions of the same recipe provide stronger healing and longer buff durations.

When cooking, you can substitute ingredients within the same category. For example, Lean Meat can be swapped for Tender Meat or Marbled Meat, and Lentils can be replaced with Oats, Barley, or Wheat. Using higher-quality substitutes increases the meal's quality tier.

Cooking Recipe Locations by Region

Hernand

Hernand is the first major settlement you encounter and contains the highest concentration of early-game recipes. Explore every building interior, including the castle during story quests.

Beighen

Beighen is a smaller settlement in the Pailune region. Check both the drinking hall and the small houses for recipe books.

Pailune

Pailune is the capital of the region south of Hernand. Its inn carries several valuable recipes, and a few more hide in the surrounding streets.

Calphade

Demeniss

Demeniss is a coastal city with multiple recipe sources. The Reventine Winery in west Demeniss holds a particularly valuable recipe behind a locked door.

Greymane Camp

Several recipes become available at Greymane Camp as you upgrade the settlement and recruit followers. Ronnie, the camp cook, unlocks additional recipes once recruited.

Wilderness and Cave Locations

Some of the most valuable recipes in the game are hidden in caves and remote buildings rather than towns. Always investigate unusual structures and narrow cave openings while exploring.

Alchemy Recipe Locations

Alchemy recipes produce elixirs and potions at a Cauldron. There are two known Cauldron locations in the early game:

• Shadow's Whisper Cave - North of Hernand City, just west of Three Saints Falls. Enter through a narrow crack in the cliff face.

• Hernand Town - East side of Hernand, in a vacant building marked by a dangling sign displaying a mortar and pestle.

Research Institute Recipes

The Research Institute at Pororin unlocks alchemy formulas through research projects. These require Silver coins, completion time, and sufficient Knowledge about the surrounding area (gained from completing local quests and finding points of interest).

The Pharmacological Research project must be completed before Plant Combination Research becomes available. Both projects are located in the Pororin institute in the Hernand region.

Late-Game and Story-Locked Recipes

Some of the most powerful recipes only become available during later chapters of the main story.

Beverage Recipes

Beverages are crafted at a Cauldron and primarily restore Stamina along with providing Ice Resistance buffs. Unlike food, beverages do not have quality tiers.

Quest Reward Recipes

Several faction quests and story missions reward recipes directly upon completion. These do not need to be found in the world.

Vendor-Sold Recipes Summary

Inns are the most consistent source of purchasable recipes across Pywel. Every time you arrive at a new settlement, visit the inn and check both the vendor inventory and any recipe books sitting on shelves and tables inside. Below is a consolidated list of recipes available from vendors.

Improvisation Recipes

At any cooking station you can select the Improvise option (press F on keyboard, Square on PlayStation, or X on Xbox) to experiment with ingredient combinations. Successfully cooking a new dish three times through improvisation permanently adds the recipe to your collection, exactly as if you had found the recipe book.

The following basic recipes are known from the start of the game and do not need to be found or purchased:

Beyond these starter recipes, experimenting at Field Grills and Field Pots can reveal additional dishes. Throwing random ingredients together carries a risk of failure, but successful experiments are how many players fill out their recipe collection without hunting down every book.

Alchemy Ingredients Quick Reference

Alchemy recipes require Reagents (which determine the elixir's effect) and Catalysts (which trigger the alchemical reaction). Plants, fungi, and insects all serve as reagents, while ores and animal materials serve as catalysts.

Tips for Finding All Recipes

• Check every inn. Inns are the single richest source of recipes in the game. Every settlement inn stocks at least one purchasable recipe, and many have additional books on shelves and tables nearby.

• Explore building interiors. Whenever you enter a new building, look for pieces of paper sitting on shelves, tables, and barrels. These are often recipe books waiting to be learned.

• Use your Lantern on books. After picking up a recipe book, equip it and use your Lantern to read the glowing blue text. The recipe registers permanently once read.

• Sell learned recipes for profit. Once a recipe is learned, the physical book can be safely sold to any vendor for extra Silver. There is no downside to discarding or selling a learned recipe item.

• Invest in Research. The Pororin Research Institute unlocks upgraded elixir formulas. Complete the Pharmacological Research project first (7 Silver, 9 hours) to unlock Plant Combination Research (120 Silver, 18 hours), which grants three powerful elixir formulas.

• Improvise at cooking stations. If you have ingredients but no matching recipe, try improvising. Cooking a valid new dish three times adds it permanently to your collection.

• Progress the main story. Several recipes are locked behind story progression. Hernand Castle recipes become available during Chapter 1, Greymane Camp recipes during Chapter 3, and the Refined Palmar Pill formula during Chapter 9.

• Complete faction quests. Quests from NPCs like Renee and House Roberts reward recipes that cannot be found elsewhere in the world.
