Senior Life Stage
March 31, 2026 at 07:46 PM
Initial version
The Senior stage is the ninth and final life stage in inZOI. It begins on approximately day 66 of a Zoi's lifespan and can last up to 35 in-game days, though most Zois pass away from natural causes well before reaching that maximum. The Senior stage represents the twilight years of a Zoi's life, bringing mandatory retirement, visible physical aging, and an increasing risk of death from old age.
While the Senior stage introduces certain limitations, it is far from an idle period. Senior Zois can still socialize, pursue hobbies, maintain relationships, level up skills, and enjoy most of the activities available to younger Zois. The stage is best understood as a time to tie up loose ends, spend time with family, and ensure your Zoi's karma is in good standing before the inevitable end.
The Senior life stage spans roughly 17 in-game days under default settings, with a theoretical maximum lifespan of 35 days from the start of the stage. However, the probability of natural death increases steadily throughout this window, so reaching the full 35 days is uncommon. At the default day length of 96 real-world minutes per in-game day, the Senior stage translates to approximately 27 hours of real-time gameplay at the 17-day mark and up to 56 hours at the maximum.
Female Zois tend to live slightly longer than male Zois during the Senior stage, mirroring real-world longevity patterns. The exact day of death is not displayed in advance; your Zoi can pass away at any point once they enter the Senior bracket.

When a Zoi transitions into the Senior stage, they are forced into mandatory retirement from their current job or career. This applies to most occupations in the game. The Zoi receives a farewell announcement on their Smartphone confirming that their working days are over. Only Young Adult, Adult, and Middle-Aged Zois are eligible for employment, so once the Senior stage begins, your Zoi can no longer hold a job or seek new employment.
Some careers have even earlier retirement thresholds. The Idol Trainee career, for instance, forces retirement when a Zoi reaches the Adult stage rather than waiting for Senior. You can check any job's retirement age by pressing the Eligibility Criteria button in the Smartphone's career section.
Retirement does not eliminate your Zoi's income entirely. If your household has other working members, they continue to bring in Meow. Senior Zois can also earn money through businesses they own, gardening and crop farming harvests, selling crafted goods, or other non-career income sources.
The transition to Senior brings immediate and noticeable changes to your Zoi's physical appearance. These visual shifts happen automatically when the life stage changes and cannot be customized or reversed. The changes include:
Wrinkles and skin texture: The skin develops pronounced wrinkles across the face and body. Following the Hotfix 1.05 update, wrinkles were made significantly more visible than they were at initial launch.
Hair color: Hair turns white or grey, reflecting the Zoi's advanced age.
Posture and stature: Height and posture shift subtly to reflect an older body. Senior Zois may appear slightly hunched compared to their Adult or Middle-Aged appearance.
Clothing: While you can still change your Zoi's clothing manually, the automatic appearance update at stage transition will alter their default outfit to suit their new age bracket.
These visual changes apply to every Zoi in the city when they reach the Senior stage, including NPCs and neighbors. There is currently no in-game way to view your Zoi's exact numerical age during the Early Access release; you can only observe which life stage they are in.
Despite the loss of career employment, Senior Zois retain access to nearly all of the game's activities and systems. Retirement frees up a Zoi's daily schedule, giving you more time to focus on the things that matter during their remaining days.
Activity | Details |
|---|---|
Skill Building | Seniors can continue leveling all skills, including Cooking, Fitness, Art, Gardening, and more. There is no skill cap tied to age. |
Socializing | All social interactions remain available. Seniors can build and maintain friendships, attend parties, visit community lots, and use Bubbly on their Smartphone. |
Romance | Romantic interactions, dating, and marriage are all still available for Senior Zois. |
Hobbies | Activities like fishing, collecting, reading, yoga, karaoke, bonsai care, and photography remain fully accessible. |
Business Ownership | Seniors can continue running any business they own, such as a restaurant, bakery, bar, or cafe. |
Parenting and Family | Senior Zois can still fulfill parenting duties if they have younger children in the household. They can help with homework, cook meals, and engage with family members as normal. |
Travel | Seniors can travel between cities, visit all public lots, and explore every neighborhood in Dowon, Bliss Bay, and Cahaya. |
Natural death from old age is the defining feature of the Senior stage. Unlike all other causes of death in the game, death from old age cannot be prevented through player action. It happens automatically once the game's internal timer determines that the Zoi's time has come. Following a community-requested update by Krafton, only Senior Zois can die from natural causes; younger Zois are no longer at risk of spontaneous age-related death.
When a Senior Zoi dies, a notification appears on screen regardless of whether that Zoi was your currently selected character. You are then presented with two options:
Continue playing: The deceased Zoi is removed from the household. If other playable Zois remain, you can continue with them. If the deceased was your last playable Zoi, you will need to select a new family.
Go Back in Time: Load a previous save file from before the death occurred. This is useful if you were not prepared for the loss.
There is no way to resurrect a Zoi once they have died. Death is permanent in inZOI. However, the deceased Zoi may continue to exist as a ghost depending on their karma at the time of death.
What happens to a Zoi after death depends entirely on their karma score at the moment they pass away. Karma is the moral ledger that tracks every good and bad action a Zoi performs throughout their life. It determines whether a Zoi moves on to the afterlife peacefully or is forced to linger as a ghost.
Karma Level | Outcome After Death |
|---|---|
Good or Normal Karma | The Zoi passes on peacefully to the afterlife. They disappear from the city and can no longer be played. |
Poor or Terrible Karma | The Zoi becomes a ghost and must remain in the city to redeem themselves. Ghosts need to reach Good karma before they can pass on to the afterlife. |
Ghosts remain in the city for a period of 3 days. During this time, they can interact with the world using Spirit Power, a resource that regenerates slowly over time and can also be restored by talking to other ghosts. Each type of death grants the ghost a unique ability. For example, a ghost who died from fire can set objects ablaze, while one who died from drowning can cause seasickness in nearby Zois. Ghosts who died from old age do not receive a special elemental ability but can still use basic Spirit Power interactions.
If too many ghosts accumulate in a city, new Zois cannot be born and new families cannot be created. This places responsibility on the player to manage the karma of their Zois throughout their lifetimes, not just at the end. Surviving household members can hire a Soul Guide from the Pocket Market to summon and communicate with the ghost of a deceased Zoi.
A Senior Zoi's death does not erase their impact on the world. The inheritance system ensures that wealth and property pass to surviving family members. When a Zoi dies, their Meow (the in-game currency) and household belongings transfer to the remaining members of the household.
Beyond financial inheritance, the Senior stage is an opportunity to cement a Zoi's legacy through the game's genetics and inheritance system. Children and grandchildren inherit physical traits, characteristics, and even tendencies from their parents. Building strong family bonds during the Senior years helps ensure that the next generation carries forward the family line.
When a Zoi passes away, a funeral can be held for them. Funerals are social events where friends and family gather to pay their respects. Other Zois in the household and across the city will experience mourning, which affects their emotions and needs for a period of time.
Smart players begin preparing for the Senior stage well before it arrives. Since the transition is automatic and the death window begins immediately, entering the Senior stage with unfinished business can feel abrupt. Here are practical steps to take during the Middle-Aged stage:
Check your karma: Open the karma panel and confirm your Zoi is at Good or Normal karma. If karma is Poor or worse, focus on performing positive actions like giving compliments, encouraging other Zois, and posting kind content on Bubbly. You can also use a Neutral Donut from the Meow Store to reset karma to Normal.
Secure household finances: Make sure other household members have jobs or that you have enough savings to sustain the family after your Zoi can no longer work. Consider running a business that generates passive income.
Complete career goals: If your Zoi is close to a promotion or career milestone, try to achieve it before the mandatory retirement kicks in at Senior.
Strengthen family bonds: Spend time with children, partners, and close friends. These relationships carry emotional weight and affect how other Zois react to the death.
Fulfill Desired Lives: Check your Zoi's Desired Lives and Ambitions progress. The Senior stage is your last window to complete any remaining life goals.
If you want to delay or prevent the Senior stage entirely, inZOI provides several options through the game settings:
Option | How It Works |
|---|---|
Disable Aging (My Zois) | Found under Game Options > Simulation. Prevents your controlled Zois from progressing through life stages. A Zoi frozen at the Adult stage will never become a Senior. |
Disable Aging (Other Zois) | Same menu. Prevents NPCs and other city residents from aging. Useful if you want to keep the city population stable. |
Adjust Day Length | Change the length of an in-game day from the default 96 minutes to anywhere between 48 minutes and 24 hours of real time. Longer days slow the pace of aging across all life stages. This option is available under Game Settings. |
The aging toggle was introduced in the April 4, 2025 Hotfix during the Early Access period, in response to community feedback from players who felt their Zois aged too quickly. Disabling aging freezes your Zoi at their current life stage indefinitely, allowing unlimited gameplay at any age bracket.
Start managing karma early in your Zoi's life. A lifetime of good deeds makes the difference between a peaceful passing and being stuck as a ghost.
The Senior stage is the best time to focus on legacy activities: write diaries, nurture grandchildren, and complete collections.
If your Senior Zoi is your household's primary earner, train another household member in a high-paying career before retirement hits.
Use the Go Back in Time option if a Senior dies at an inconvenient moment. You can reload a save and spend the remaining time more intentionally.
Consider disabling aging for your Zoi temporarily if you want to finish a long-term project like maxing out a skill or completing a major collection.
Keep your Senior Zoi's needs satisfied. While old age is the primary cause of Senior death, neglecting hunger or sleep can lead to earlier death from other causes.
Visit all three cities during the Senior stage for a final tour: Dowon, Bliss Bay, and Cahaya.
If you notice too many ghosts in your city preventing new births, focus on improving their karma so they can pass on to the afterlife and free up population slots.
