Genetics and Inheritance
Complete guide to the genetics and inheritance system in inZOI. Covers physical feature inheritance from parents, trait assignment for newborns, pregnancy mechanics, adoption, medical-assisted conception, Family Tree, multi-generational play, and the enhanced genetics system planned for 2026.
Overview
Genetics and inheritance in inZOI determine how children resemble their parents and what personality traits they receive. When a child is born, the game generates their appearance based on the physical features of both parents, including facial structure, hair color, and body proportions. Traits work differently: newborns receive a randomized trait rather than inheriting one from their parents. The system has been expanded through several updates and is set for a major overhaul on the 2026 development roadmap.
Physical Feature Inheritance
Children born in inZOI inherit their physical appearance from their parents. The game uses both parents' features to generate the child's face, hair color, and other physical attributes. This applies to both natural pregnancy and medical-assisted conception.

The exact algorithm behind inheritance is not publicly documented. Players have observed that children display a blend of features from both parents rather than copying one parent exactly. However, the specific mechanics (whether the system uses dominant/recessive logic, weighted randomization, or simple blending) have not been confirmed by the developers.
When a child is created through the "Create a Child with Medical Help" feature using only one parent, the child inherits only that single Zoi's genetic traits. When two Zois partner for the procedure, the child reflects both parents' features.
Traits and Personality
inZOI's personality system centers on Traits, with 18 total Traits organized across 9 categories. These categories draw partly from MBTI and Enneagram personality frameworks. Each Zoi receives one Trait, and it cannot be changed after character creation or birth.
When a baby is born in-game, they receive a randomized Trait. The exact mechanism of trait inheritance is not fully confirmed, but babies appear to inherit traits influenced by their parents' trait pools. Values and Desired Lives are not assigned at the newborn stage and develop later as the Zoi ages.
Separately from Traits, the v0.4.0 update introduced Characteristics (sometimes called Temperaments). Fifteen Characteristics were added, including Extroverted, Depressed, Bookworm, Emotionally Needy, Fitness Enthusiast, and Slacker. Each Zoi can hold up to two non-conflicting Characteristics, and these appear to develop through gameplay experiences rather than being assigned at birth.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy in inZOI lasts 3 in-game days, divided into Early, Middle, and Late stages. To start a pregnancy, use the "Suggest Having a Baby" interaction under the Romance menu between two Zois. Conception is not guaranteed on the first attempt. Originally, only married opposite-sex couples could conceive, but the v0.2.0 update expanded this to allow non-marital births as well.
Pregnancy Events
Pregnant Zois experience several events across the three-day period:
Event | Description |
|---|---|
Baby Bump Growth | The pregnant Zoi's belly visibly grows larger each day through all three stages. |
Morning Sickness | The Zoi may feel sick and vomit in the toilet during the early stage. |
Mood Changes | Erratic mood swings occur. There is a 50% chance of receiving a "Sentimental" pregnancy buff. |
Announce Pregnancy | The Zoi can share the news with other Zois through a special interaction. |
Feel the Baby Kick | Other Zois can interact by feeling the pregnant Zoi's stomach. |
Food Cravings | The pregnant Zoi develops cravings for specific foods. |
Read Parenting Books | Gives a "Tranquil" mood buff and helps prepare for parenthood. |
Phone Ultrasound | The Zoi can view ultrasound pictures on their phone. |
During pregnancy, the Zoi's appearance cannot be edited in Create a Zoi. This restriction lifts after the baby is born.
Giving Birth
After 3 in-game days, a "Give Birth" notification with a red exclamation mark appears on the pregnant Zoi's portrait. Clicking it triggers a brief hospital bed cutscene, followed by a pop-up window to name the child. The baby then appears in a crib in the household.
Households are capped at 8 Zois. If the household is already at maximum capacity, pregnancy automatically fails. A household member must pass away or move out before a new child can be born.
Adoption
Adoption was added in the v0.2.0 update (June 2025). Zois can adopt a child through the "Adopt a Child" option on a computer or laptop. Adoption has age and property requirements but does not require marriage, so single Zois and same-sex couples can adopt. Adopted children have no genetic relationship to their adoptive parents.
Medical-Assisted Conception
Also added in v0.2.0, the "Create a Child with Medical Help" feature is available via computer or laptop and costs 1,000 Mew. It provides a path for same-sex couples, single Zois, and anyone who prefers an alternative to traditional pregnancy.

Method | Description |
|---|---|
Solo conception | The child inherits only the initiating Zoi's genetic traits. |
Partnered conception | The child reflects both Zois' genetic traits, regardless of the Zois' genders. |
A known issue affects unmarried couples using medical conception: only the initiating parent may be recognized as family in the Family Tree, while the second parent is not properly linked. This has been reported on the official forums and appears to be a bug rather than intended behavior.
Gender Determination
A baby's gender is randomly determined at birth. There is currently no way for players to influence or select the baby's gender. Community members have requested gender-influence mechanics similar to other life simulation games, but no such feature has been added.
Twins and Triplets
Multiple births (twins, triplets) are not possible in the current version of inZOI. Players with extensive gameplay testing report never encountering multiple births. However, the 2026 development roadmap explicitly lists "Implement multiple pregnancies such as twins and triplets" as a planned feature.
Family Tree
The Family Tree feature was added in v0.5.0 (December 2025). Players access it through the Home icon in the Family List, then selecting "Edit Family." It displays the relationships between all Zois in the household, showing parent-child connections, marriages, and sibling relationships. A hotfix in v0.5.1 corrected display issues that occurred after changing cities.
Life Stages and Genetics
inZOI features nine life stages, each lasting a set number of in-game days:
Life Stage | Duration (In-Game Days) |
|---|---|
Newborn | 1 |
Toddler | 2 |
Child | 7 |
Adolescent | 6 |
Teenager | 4.5 |
Young Adult | 9 |
Adult | 20 |
Middle-Aged | 16 |
Senior | 17 |
Newborn and Toddler stages are only accessible through in-game pregnancy or adoption. They cannot be selected during character creation. Only seven life stages (Child through Senior) are available in Create a Zoi.
Multi-Generational Play
The 8-Zoi household limit allows approximately 4 generations to coexist in a single household. To continue generational play beyond this, older family members must pass away or be moved to a different household. Players can split or merge households to manage complex family structures.
Since the genetics algorithm is not publicly documented, there is limited information about how inherited features compound across multiple generations. The planned enhanced genetics system may make multi-generational genetic patterns more visible once implemented.
2026 Roadmap: Enhanced Genetics
The December 2025 "Fundamentals First & 2026 Roadmap" announced a significant expansion to the genetics system. The planned enhanced system will add inheritance of:
Trait | Details |
|---|---|
Body Type | Physical build and proportions will pass from parent to child. |
Talents | Skill predispositions will be inherited, giving children natural advantages in certain areas. |
Diseases | Health conditions and predispositions will be passed down genetically. |
Tendencies | Behavioral inclinations will be inherited from parents. |
Additional planned family features include baby showers, gender reveal events, infant traits, expanded infant and child interactions, new childcare items, stroller mechanics, children's friend-invite parties, grandparent visits, and school events. The development team noted that not all roadmap items may be achievable within 2026.
