Walkthrough
Approach the Goldleaf Guildhouse
Follow the quest marker to the Goldleaf Guildhouse at Unicorn Cliff. Hornsplitter's guards patrol the entrance. Defeat them to gain access to the building. These guards are standard enemies and fall quickly.
Enter the Guildhouse
Go inside and a cutscene triggers. Kailok appears and makes it clear he has no intention of surrendering the guild. The confrontation escalates immediately into the chapter's final boss fight.
Boss Fight: Kailok the Hornsplitter
Kailok the Hornsplitter has a single health bar but is significantly more dangerous than Matthias from earlier in the chapter. He is extremely agile with swift attacks and movements. This is the hardest fight in Chapter 2 by a comfortable margin. A defensive combat style is strongly recommended.
Attack Patterns
Attack | Description | |
|---|---|---|
Kailok chains together quick sword strikes with very little recovery time between them. He can swing 4-5 times in rapid succession. | Do not trade hits. Wait for the combo to end, then counter-attack during his brief recovery window. | |
Sword Wave | He swings his weapon in a wide arc that sends a projectile wave across the ground. The wave travels in a straight line and covers significant distance. | Dodge to the side rather than blocking. Blocking eats through stamina quickly. The wave has a narrow hitbox, so a sidestep works reliably. |
When Kailok glows blue, he becomes temporarily invulnerable to stagger. He continues attacking normally during this phase. | Stop attacking immediately. Focus entirely on dodging until the blue glow fades. Hitting him during super armor wastes stamina and leaves you vulnerable. | |
Kailok dashes forward and delivers a heavy overhead slash. Fast startup makes it hard to react to. | Preemptive dodge. If you see him shift his weight back, dodge sideways immediately. |
Recommended Strategy
The most reliable approach is a defensive style built around perfect counters:
Perfect Counter: Press L1/LB just as Kailok attacks to trigger a perfect counter (your character glows green when successful). A successful counter interrupts his combo and opens him up for punishment.
Punish Window: After a counter, hit him with two or three light attacks (R1/RB). Do not commit to long chains. His recovery windows are short, and getting greedy usually results in eating a full combo.
Reset: Back off after your punish hits connect and wait for the next opportunity. Patience is key.
Healing: Bring at least 40 cooked meat (grilled meat from the Hernand vendor works at 80 HP each). Hold D-pad right to open the quick-use menu, cycle with R2, and press right to eat. The fight is long enough that you will take hits regardless of skill level.
The Pump Kick skill from the Matthias fight earlier is useful here for creating distance when Kailok gets too aggressive. Dropkick can also work as a crowd-control option if Kailok's guards join the fight briefly.
Post-Fight
After Kailok falls, a cutscene plays. The remaining guild members turn on the Hornsplitter, and Shakatu steps forward to assume leadership of the Goldleaf Merchant Guild. Kliff receives the Sword of the Lord, crafting materials, and the Seal of Greed as proof of completing Chapter 2's main conflict. Shakatu thanks Kliff, and the guild begins restructuring under honest leadership. A merchant at the guild mentions having seen someone claiming to be a Greymane in Hernand's alleys, which concludes Chapter 2 and sets up Old Friend in Chapter 3.
Rewards
Reward | Details |
|---|---|
A powerful sword upgrade; one of the best weapons available at this point in the game. Equip it immediately. | |
Iron Ore x7 | Crafting material for weapon and armor upgrades |
Copper Ore x2 | Crafting material |
Seal of Greed | Goldleaf Merchant Guild seal; story item confirming chapter completion |
+500 Hernandian Contribution XP | Major reputation boost with the Hernand region; the largest single gain in Chapter 2 |
Tips
If you are struggling, leave the guildhouse and grind some materials. Purchase raw meat from the Hernand town vendor, cook it at a nearby pot, and hunt animals for additional supplies. Coming in with a full stock of healing items makes the fight much more manageable.
The Sword of the Lord is a significant upgrade. Equip it immediately after the fight since Chapter 3 starts with more challenging encounters.
The +500 Hernandian Contribution XP is the largest single reputation gain in Chapter 2. It should push your regional standing up noticeably.
Watch the post-fight dialogue carefully. The merchant's mention of a Greymane in the alleys is the direct hook for Chapter 3, where Kliff reunites with old companions.
Kailok's Super Armor phase (blue glow) is the most dangerous moment. Players who continue attacking through it will find themselves locked in animations while he retaliates freely.
