The Anvil upgrade at the Weaponsmith Workshop is the single biggest iron sink in the early-to-mid game. It crafts from Iron Ingots via the Workbench (recipe: 30 Foothills Iron Ingot per Anvil item), then placed as a Weaponsmith upgrade (10 Wood + 1 Anvil).
Upgrading Weapons and Armor with Iron
Iron Ingots feed the weapon and armor upgrade system at the Upgrading Station, allowing players to raise gear up to level 8. Iron-tier equipment is significantly stronger than copper-tier, and armor averages across all slots, so it pays to upgrade every piece evenly.
