Hull Bracing: Keelhold is a Rare-rarity modded Ship Hull Modification in Windrose. The Rare tier protects your repair kits from duration loss when the ship takes damage, and the Epic ascension layers an additional 30% Repair Kit effect duration on top. Keelhold is the defensive bracing most often recommended for sustained engagements because it directly multiplies the work your Combat Repair Kit does under fire.
Bracing intended to steady the ship during repairs, keeping the keel true while the worst damage is brought under control. "They said she wouldn't make it. She did." (overheard in a tavern.)

In-Game Effect
Rare tier: Taking damage no longer affects the duration of repair kits. The kit continues to tick for its full duration even while cannonballs are landing on the hull.
Epic tier: Retains the Rare effect and adds a layered bonus: Repair Kit effect duration is increased by 30%.
The bracing affects any consumable that uses the Repair Kit timer, including the Combat Repair Kit (heals a percentage of ship HP over a duration). Standard repair behavior in Windrose is that incoming damage chips away at the remaining duration of an active kit; Keelhold removes that interaction entirely at the Rare tier. At the Epic tier the full duration also runs longer, so each kit rolls for more total healing per use.
How Repair Kits Interact with Keelhold
The Combat Repair Kit restores 30% of ship health over 10 seconds. Without Keelhold, cannon impacts during those 10 seconds reduce the effective duration, so a kit used while a broadside is inbound delivers less of its listed healing. With Keelhold equipped, the full duration plays out regardless of the damage you take, so the kit always delivers its intended heal.
The Epic ascension extends the 10-second window to 13 seconds, which increases total heal throughput per kit. Stacked with Naval Tactics III: Stretch the Supply (+30% repair kit duration), the combined bonus reaches roughly +60% duration on a base 10-second kit, with the Keelhold clause guaranteeing the extra seconds are never trimmed by incoming fire.
DEF by Item Level
Keelhold uses the standard hull modification DEF curve, gaining +20 DEF per item level from 100 at Level 1 to 380 at the Level 15 cap.
Item Level | DEF | Item Level | DEF |

How to Unlock Crafting
Hull Bracing: Keelhold requires learning Plans: Keelhold Hull Bracing, a Rare Recipe Paper bought from the Smugglers of Port Royal Provisioner once your Smugglers of Port Royal reputation reaches Level 2. The plan costs Piastre x300 and is consumed on use; one copy unlocks the recipe permanently.
Crafting Recipes
Hull Bracing: Keelhold is crafted at the Shipwright's Workshop. Station tiers unlock higher-quality material pipelines for the same finished bracing; the Level 3 station produces Level 11-15 copies that carry the full 380 DEF cap.

Ascend to Epic
The Rare Hull Bracing: Keelhold can be ascended to Epic rarity at the Shipwright's Workshop by combining the base Rare bracing with Tumbaga Ingot. The ascension keeps the Rare-tier effect and layers the Epic-only bonus on top, so the Epic bracing is strictly better once the Tumbaga cost is acceptable.

Epic-only bonus: Repair Kit effect duration is increased by 30%. The 380 DEF value does not change on ascension; the only difference is the layered Epic-only bonus that stacks with the retained Rare-tier "immune to damage" clause.
Comparison vs Other Hull Bracings
The three Rare hull bracings serve different damage profiles. Keelhold is a sustain pick, Standfast is a stack-consumption burst pick, and Iron Resolve is a clutch low-HP pick.
Bracing | Rare Effect | Epic Bonus | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
Repair kit duration is unaffected by incoming damage. | +30% Repair Kit duration (layered on top of Rare clause). | Long sustained engagements, fleet fights, solo patrols where you cannot safely disengage between Combat Repair Kit uses. | |
Grants 5 stacks of Standfast over time; each incoming hit consumes 1 stack and reduces damage by 25% for 3s. | Extends or enhances the stack clause (see Standfast entry for exact figures). | Short high-burst engagements and rushes where the stacks carry you through one opening volley. | |
Scales damage reduction as hull HP drops, reaching up to 25% resistance at around 30% HP. | Extends or enhances the low-HP scaling clause (see Iron Resolve entry). | Clutch last-stand situations and difficulty modes where you regularly drop below 30% HP in fights. |
All three variants share the same DEF curve (100 at Level 1 → 380 at Level 15) and the same base slot, so the decision comes down to playstyle rather than stat ceiling. The Hull Bracings roster covers every variant for side-by-side reference.
Synergies and Best Pairings
Naval Tactics III: Stretch the Supply. This tactic adds +30% Repair Kit duration. Stacked with an Epic Keelhold's +30% Epic bonus, a 10-second Combat Repair Kit becomes roughly 16 seconds of healing that cannot be trimmed by incoming damage. See Naval Tactics III: Stretch the Supply for the tactic's unlock path.
Repair Kit Crafting. Because Keelhold makes every kit charge land at full value, it rewards carrying more kits into a fight. Keep a ready stock of Combat Repair Kit (recipe: Wooden Plank x5, Steel Nails x1, Rum Bottle x1) so that a long fight is limited by time, not by empty cargo holds.
Ship Pairings. Keelhold performs best on hulls that expect extended time in the red. The Frigate and Blackbeard Frigate are the strongest pairings because their larger HP pools and slower turning profile force trading broadsides rather than kiting. Brig and Brethren Brig hulls also benefit when used in 1v2 engagements. A Ketch can run Keelhold for early-game survivability but often gets more value from Standfast once its mobility and lower HP pool are in play.
When to Use Keelhold
Keelhold shines whenever repair uptime is the limiting factor on your survivability. In sustained 1v2 and 1v3 fleet fights where return fire keeps interrupting repair cycles, the Rare tier protects the kit duration from combat damage, and the Epic tier adds the 30% duration bonus. It is less useful in 1v1 skirmishes that end before a second kit is needed, where a one-shot burst mitigation like Standfast or a comeback tool like Iron Resolve tends to matter more.
Example scenario: a Frigate takes on two Brigs around a trade route and cannot afford to break off. The player pops a Combat Repair Kit just as the first Brig's broadside lands. Without Keelhold, incoming hits eat seconds off the kit's healing window; with Keelhold, the full 30% heal lands over 10 seconds (13 at Epic), and the ship survives to reload and respond. Across a pair of kits in a long fight the difference can be the margin between limping away and sinking.
Rare vs Epic Comparison
Stat | Rare | Epic |
|---|---|---|
DEF (Max) | 380 | 380 |
Max Item Level | 15 | 15 |
Base Effect | Taking damage no longer affects the duration of repair kits. | Taking damage no longer affects the duration of repair kits. |
Extra Epic Bonus | None | Repair Kit effect duration is increased by 30%. |
Ascend Cost | Not applicable | Tumbaga Ingot x7 + Rare Keelhold x1 |
The raw DEF value does not change on ascension; the only difference is the layered Epic-only bonus that stacks with the retained Rare-tier effect. If Tumbaga supply is tight, the Rare tier is already the strongest sustain bracing in the game and is worth fielding as-is.
When the Upgrade is Worth It
Keelhold Epic is the clearest quality-of-life upgrade of the three Rare bracings. The extra 30% Repair Kit duration compounds with the protected duration from the Rare tier, so kits that would have burned out mid-fight now cover the whole engagement. Strong on Frigate hulls running long patrol routes where retreats between fights are not always possible.
When to Skip the Ascension
Ascending burns Tumbaga Ingot x7 per hull slot. If your Shipwright's Workshop is not yet at Level 3, if your current Rare bracing is well below Item Level 15, or if you are still deciding between the three bracing variants, hold the Tumbaga for later. The Rare tier is already strong in isolation, and the Epic is a one-way commitment on that specific variant.
Tips
Stockpile Combat Repair Kit before long voyages. Keelhold multiplies their value, so running out mid-fight is the main failure case.
Pair with Naval Tactics III: Stretch the Supply for roughly +60% repair kit duration that cannot be cut short by damage.
Upgrade the Shipwright's Workshop to Level 3 before chasing Item Level 15 crafts; lower-tier stations cap the DEF roll of the bracing.
Keep one spare Rare Keelhold in storage before ascending; a sunk Epic bracing is not recoverable.
If playing on a higher difficulty where hits land hard and fast, consider swapping Keelhold for Hull Bracing: Iron Resolve situationally to squeeze out clutch moments below 30% HP.
