The Cutlass is an A-tier saber in Windrose, prized for crowd-control sweeping attacks and forgiving Perfect Block timing. It deals slash damage and scales with Agility, making it a strong choice for early to mid-game saber builds and especially useful against grouped enemies at Pirate Camps. The Iron Cutlass variant (a higher-tier version with longer Perfect Block windows) is one of the community's recommended beginner melee weapons.

Cutlass vs Rapier
Both the Cutlass and Rapier are one-handed Agility-scaling saber-class weapons. The key distinction (per community combat testing):
Cutlass: Does NOT lose poise on perfect parries. This makes it significantly more forgiving for beginners learning Soulslite combat. Wider attack arcs reach multiple enemies. Slightly slower attack speed than rapier
Rapier: Does lose poise on perfect parries (community-tested). Faster attack speed and longer reach for thrust attacks. Better at single-target burst damage. Less forgiving for parry-heavy play
Recommendation: Cutlass for beginners and crowd-control situations; Rapier for experienced single-target duelist play. Many players carry both and switch based on encounter type.
Build Synergy
Talents: Fencer branch (Deep Cuts +3-9% slash damage, Surgical Cuts +3-9% one-handed crit, Perfect Counter +5-12% crit after blocking)
Armor: Flibustier's Attire (-20% attack stamina cost, +15% one-handed damage); Privateer's Regalia (+10% Crit Hit Chance, +10% Crit Damage per nearby enemy)
Attributes: Agility (primary), Mastery (for crit), Endurance (for stamina pool)
Food buffs: Agility +20 (Hearty Egg Broth, Gazpacho, Crab Soup with Diced Tomatoes)
Where to Get
Standard Cutlass: Crafted at the Weaponsmith Workshop using gathered materials
Iron Cutlass: Loot drop from mid-tier dungeons; rare drop from defeated mercenaries
Heavy Boarding Cutlass: Boarding loot from higher-tier Blackbeard ships
