Hull Bracing

Hull bracing is the baseline Uncommon Ship Hull Modification item, mounted in a ship's dedicated hull-mod slot. It is the first survivability upgrade most captains craft because the recipe uses common materials and requires no recipe paper to unlock.

In-Game Effect

The base Hull bracing has no mechanical effect beyond the DEF stat itself. Its value is the raw defense it contributes to the ship at Item Level 15 (DEF 380, matching the top-tier bracket for ship equipment) plus the fact that it fills the hull-mod slot at no plan-paper cost, which frees your reputation-gated plan budget for other categories.

Bracing Variants

The base Hull bracing is the plain Uncommon version. Three Rare variants, each gated behind a Plans recipe from the Smugglers of Port Royal, trade some of the raw defense profile for an active effect:

Only one bracing can occupy the Hull Modification slot at a time, so picking a bracing is a single, swappable choice per ship. The base version stays relevant because it costs no plan paper and reaches the same DEF 380 ceiling; the Rare variants are sidegrades that suit specific fights rather than flat upgrades.

Crafting Recipes

Hull bracing is crafted at the Shipwright's Workshop. Like other ship equipment, each station tier unlocks a better material pipeline for the same finished gear:

Each station tier raises the item level a finished bracing can reach, and defense climbs with item level up to the DEF 380 ceiling at item level 15. The Shipwright's Workshop must be upgraded to Level 2 to craft the item level 6 to 10 bracings (which start requiring Shipwright's Tools) and to Level 3 for the Tarred Planks and Mire Metal Ingot recipes at item level 11 and above.

Salvaging a base Hull bracing returns the Level-1 tier ingredients regardless of item level:

When to Use

The base Hull bracing is the most accessible hull-mod item. It slots in right after your first cannon and before any Plans-gated bracings unlock. Keep one crafted for every hull in your dock so you are never sailing without a bracing, even if you plan to eventually swap to a Keelhold, Iron Resolve, or Standfast variant once your Smuggler reputation hits Level 2.
