Overview
"Brighten Things Up" is the Important Request for Bleak Beach in Pokemon Pokopia. It is the main story quest for the area, requiring players to restore electricity to the darkened town by connecting generators via Utility Poles, lighting structures to earn bloom points, and ultimately awakening Mosslax (a moss-covered Snorlax sleeping in a cave). Completing the quest triggers an encounter with the legendary Pokemon Raikou and is required for story progression.
Prerequisites
Before "Brighten Things Up" becomes available, you must complete several steps in Bleak Beach:
Complete the "Yawn Up A Storm" Important Request in Withered Wasteland and reach Great Trainer Rank
Enter Bleak Beach through the eastern gate
Build a bridge to the Pokemon Center ruins and boot up the PC
Complete Meowth's initial requests (habitat building, house decoration)
Befriend Piplup and unlock the Surf move from Lapras
Discover Mosslax in its cave (Trubbish leads you to a collapsed bridge; use Rock Smash to break through)
Professor Tangrowth arrives and assigns the Important Request
The Electricity System
Bleak Beach is covered in perpetual darkness when you first arrive. The goal of "Brighten Things Up" is to restore power to the town by connecting three generators to a central charging station using Utility Poles, then distributing electricity to streetlights, lamps, and other structures.
Generators
Three power sources are available in Bleak Beach:
Generator | Location | How to Activate |
|---|---|---|
Windmill | Central area (on the ocean coast) | Already active when found. Connect Utility Poles to distribute power. |
Furnace | Southwest side | Burn Lumber and Sturdy Sticks as fuel. Torchic helps operate it. Connect via Utility Poles. |
Water Wheel | Southeast side | Destroy water-blocking blocks to allow water flow and activate. Connect via Utility Poles. |
All three generators should be connected to the central charging station (the large building in the center of town) via Utility Poles for maximum power output.
Utility Poles
Utility Poles are the backbone of the electricity system. They carry power from generators to structures. When placing Utility Poles:
Look for blocks with darker circles at the center where original poles once stood. These are the ideal placement spots.
Place poles in a chain from generator to charging station to streetlights.
Wires connect automatically between adjacent poles, and power begins flowing.
Break rocks on the east side of the map to find additional poles to extend the circuit.
You can also connect the electric oven to the right of the windmill and add fuel.
Peakychu
Peakychu is a pale variant of Pikachu (Pokedex #079) who plays a central role in this quest. Peakychu used up all of its electric powers trying to save sick friends during the climate crisis that devastated Kanto. Its physical structure changed permanently; its tail shrank (Pikachu tails normally act as lightning rods), and it can no longer generate electricity on its own.
Peakychu appears after Meowth spots someone lying on the ground during the quest progression. A cutscene introduces Peakychu, after which it:
Leads you to the windmill on the ocean coast and teaches you about generators and Utility Poles
Guides you to the central charging station and explains how to connect poles from generators to it
Helps you activate all five charging station lights
Peakychu has the unique Illuminate specialty (the only Pokemon with it). Once all five charging station lights are active, speak to Peakychu to "bring the light back" to the town. The Peakychu-specific quest chain takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
Bloom Points
The bloom point system tracks how much light has been restored to Bleak Beach. Each powered structure (streetlight, lamp, spotlight) adds bloom points toward the 100-point goal needed to awaken Mosslax. The bloom counter can be checked at any time by interacting with Mosslax in its cave; the flowers on Mosslax's head indicate your progress.
Confirmed light sources that contribute bloom points:
Harbor Streetlights: lit using Electric-type Pokemon with the Generate specialty (Pawmi, Pawmo, Mareep, Jolteon)
Shell Lamps: crafted from 1 Shell + 1 Sea Glass Fragment, then lit by a Generate specialty Pokemon
Spotlights: including the lighthouse spotlight, activated by connecting power poles to the roof
Flames and campfires: any fire source connected to the power grid
Any structure connected via Utility Poles to a powered generator
Tip: Running 15 to 20 Utility Poles from Mosslax's cave to the Pokemon Center area or the restaurant is one of the fastest routes to 100 bloom points.
Walkthrough
Step 1: Light the First Three Streetlights
After discovering Mosslax and receiving the Important Request from Professor Tangrowth, meet Meowth. He asks you to light three Harbor Streetlights. Befriend Pawmi (from the Breezy Flower Bed habitat: 4 Seashore Flowers) or another Electric-type with the Generate specialty, then have it follow you to power each streetlight.
Step 2: Meet Peakychu
Meowth spots someone lying on the ground. A cutscene introduces Peakychu. Follow Peakychu to the windmill on the ocean coast. Peakychu teaches you about the generator and Utility Pole connection system.
Step 3: Connect Generators
Connect all three generators to the central charging station:
Place Utility Poles from the Windmill to the central charging station
Find the Furnace on the southwest side. Connect Utility Poles. Burn Lumber and Sturdy Sticks for fuel.
Find the Water Wheel on the southeast side. Destroy blocks blocking water flow to activate it. Connect Utility Poles.
Step 4: Light the Lighthouse
Take Trubbish to the lighthouse on the east side of Bleak Beach. Connect a power pole to the roof to activate the spotlight. This is a major bloom point contribution.
Step 5: Reach 100 Bloom Points
Continue connecting Harbor Streetlights, Shell Lamps, and other structures to powered Utility Poles. Use Meowth's Shell Lamp recipe (1 Shell + 1 Sea Glass Fragment) for Mosslax's cave. Keep checking bloom progress by talking to Mosslax. If you have not reached 100 bloom points after connecting the main infrastructure, add more lights, spotlights, and flames throughout the town.
Step 6: Awaken Mosslax
When bloom points reach 100, Mosslax is "finally in full bloom." Climb to the top of Mosslax's cave. Raikou appears, expressing surprise at your ability to illuminate the entire town. After a short conversation, Raikou departs. Speak to Mosslax to complete the awakening. Mosslax rises from its centuries-long sleep, completing the Important Request.

Tips
Befriend Pawmi early from the Breezy Flower Bed habitat. Electric Pokemon with the Generate specialty are essential for powering streetlights.
Mareep can share the Breezy Flower Bed habitat with Pawmi, giving you an extra Electric-type helper.
Connect all three generators (Windmill, Furnace, Water Wheel) to the central charging station for maximum power output.
Craft Shell Lamps (1 Shell + 1 Sea Glass Fragment) for quick bloom points in tight spaces like Mosslax's cave.
Running 15 to 20 Utility Poles from Mosslax's cave to the Pokemon Center is a fast path to 100 bloom points.
The Pikachu Doll (found in a hut at Bleak Beach) is easy to overlook. Pick it up for later use on Dream Islands to re-encounter Raikou.
Torchic helps operate the Furnace. Make sure you have befriended Torchic before attempting to connect the southwest generator.
After completing the quest, continue to explore the S.S. Anne. It contains Lost Relics and the Sailor Outfit Human Record.
