Overview
The Hammer is a heavy two-handed blunt weapon in Crimson Desert, primarily wielded by Oongka, the orc frontline powerhouse of the Greymanes. It deals devastating blunt damage with every swing and excels at staggering enemies and controlling the battlefield through knockback effects. The hammer's wide attack arcs are forgiving when it comes to aiming, making it one of the most accessible weapon types for players new to action combat.
Combat mechanics
Stagger and knockback
The hammer's primary advantage is its unmatched stagger potential. Every swing delivers significant stagger damage to enemies, and heavy attacks can send foes flying backward from the point of impact. This knockback-heavy strike pattern makes the hammer ideal for controlling groups of enemies, pushing them away from allies or into environmental hazards.
Against shielded or guarding enemies, the hammer's blunt force is particularly effective. Where lighter weapons like the rapier or claymore might bounce off a raised shield, the hammer's weight can break through defensive postures and create openings for follow-up attacks.
Ground pound
Oongka can leap high into the air and perform a ground-pound smash attack that shatters the ground beneath him. This area-of-effect (AOE) strike hits every enemy within the impact zone, either knocking them down or throwing them away from the center. The ground pound is especially useful when surrounded, clearing space and resetting the battlefield in Oongka's favor.
Enemy grab
Like Kliff's grapple moves, Oongka can grab enemies and slam them into the ground. However, Oongka's version hits with greater force and a wider impact zone, sending shockwaves that stagger nearby enemies. This grab-and-slam serves as both a single-target damage dealer and a crowd-control tool.
Hammer stats
Stat | Rating |
|---|---|
Damage per hit | High |
Attack speed | Slow |
Stagger | Very high (highest of any melee weapon) |
Knockback | High (sends enemies flying) |
Range | Medium (wide arc swings) |
AOE potential | High (ground pound, wide swings) |
Pairing with the Arm Cannon
Oongka complements his hammer with the Arm Cannon, a ranged weapon mounted on his arm. The Arm Cannon gives Oongka surprising ranged versatility, allowing him to alternate between devastating melee crowd control with the hammer and explosive ranged bombardment. This combination means Oongka is never limited to close range, despite his tanky playstyle.
Comparison with other heavy weapons
Weapon | Damage | Stagger | Speed | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Hammer | High | Very high | Slow | Stagger, knockback, crowd control |
Greatsword | Very high | High | Slow | Heavy single-target damage |
Axe | High | Moderate-high | Moderate | Balanced heavy weapon option |
Durability considerations
Like all weapons in Crimson Desert, the hammer degrades with use. A hammer at low durability loses some of its stagger effectiveness and swing speed. Given the hammer's role as a stagger-focused weapon, maintaining its durability is especially important. Keep Whetstones on hand or visit a blacksmith regularly to ensure the hammer performs at full capacity.
Tips
Use the ground pound when surrounded. It clears space quickly and gives you time to focus on individual threats
The hammer's knockback can push enemies off ledges or into walls for extra damage from environmental collisions
Switch to the Arm Cannon to deal with ranged enemies or soften up groups before closing to melee range
The wide swing arcs mean you do not need to aim as precisely as with the rapier. Focus on positioning rather than pinpoint targeting
Oongka's high health pool lets him trade hits more freely than Kliff or Damiane. Use this advantage to stay aggressive with hammer combos instead of playing defensively
Keep your hammer's durability high. A degraded hammer loses stagger damage, which is its most important stat
