Overview
It is not uncommon to get stuck while exploring and building in Pokemon Pokopia. Whether you have dug yourself into a hole, fallen into deep water, or gotten wedged between terrain features, there are several ways to escape. This guide covers every known method for getting unstuck, ranked from the simplest to the last resort.
Method 1: Return Home
The quickest and most reliable escape method. Open the Pokedex menu and select the "Return Home" option. This will teleport Ditto back to your house. If you have not built a house yet, it will transport you to the nearest safe location instead. No materials or progress are lost when using this function.
Method 2: Place Blocks Underneath
If you are stuck in a hole or ditch and have building blocks in your inventory, you can stack blocks beneath your feet to climb out. Hold blocks in your hand, aim the camera upward until the placement outline appears on the same space as your character, and press A repeatedly to build upward. Each block placed lifts you one level higher. See the How to Place Blocks Below You guide for the detailed technique.
Method 3: Rock Smash
After befriending Hitmonchan, you gain access to the Rock Smash move. This lets you punch through and destroy blocking terrain, rocks, and obstacles in your path. If you are stuck behind or between destructible objects, Rock Smash can clear the way.
Method 4: Restart the Game (Last Resort)
If none of the above methods work, you can close the game from the Nintendo Switch HOME menu and relaunch it. The game uses autosave, so you will be transported back to your most recent autosave location. You may lose a small amount of recent progress, so this should only be used when all other options have failed.

Common Ways to Get Stuck
Understanding what causes you to get stuck helps you avoid it in the first place:
Digging too deep: Excavating terrain without leaving yourself an exit can create deep pits you cannot jump out of. Always carry some building blocks when digging so you can stack your way out.
Deep water: Ditto will black out if it stays more than one block deep in water for too long. Avoid walking into deep water unless you have a way to get back to land quickly.
Missing key moves: Exploring areas without having Cut, Rock Smash, and Jump unlocked can leave you unable to pass through obstacles or terrain changes.
Prevention Tips
Learn Cut (from Scyther), Rock Smash (from Hitmonchan), and Jump as early as possible. These three moves together prevent most stuck situations.
Always carry a small stack of building blocks in your Handy Bag when exploring or digging.
Stay away from water that is deeper than one block unless you have a clear path back to shore.
Remember that Return Home is always available through the Pokedex menu if things go wrong. It costs nothing and loses no progress.
