Base liberation is one of the core open-world progression mechanics in Crimson Desert. As Kliff MacDuff explores the continent of Pywel, he encounters red-marked areas on the map that have been seized by hostile factions. These range from small bandit outposts to fortified strongholds and blockaded quarries. To liberate one, you travel to the location, defeat every enemy and their commanding boss, and reclaim the territory for the local population.
Successful liberation opens up previously restricted parts of the map, fills the artifact gauge for free Abyss Artifacts (each one equals one skill point), awards large chunks of Contribution XP with the local region, and triggers visible changes like residents returning, vendors setting up shop, and structures being rebuilt. Liberation sites are also tightly connected to Greymane Camp growth, since clearing territory feeds resources and recruits back to your settlement at Howling Hill.
Every liberation site follows the same general loop. First, scout the area by checking the map for red building icons. When you arrive, expect waves of enemies plus one or more structures that can be destroyed to weaken the defenders. Once all enemies are defeated and the boss falls, a cutscene triggers confirming that the area has been liberated.

Red map icons: hostile camps and blockades appear as red building icons on your world map. Hovering over them shows the faction name and blockade status.
Structural destruction: many liberation sites contain key buildings (infirmaries, barracks, warehouses) that can be demolished using heavy attacks. Destroying an infirmary stops wounded enemies from returning to the fight. Destroying barracks reduces enemy max health by 10%. Destroying a warehouse cuts enemy attack power by 5.
Boss encounter: every liberation site ends with a boss or garrison commander. Defeating them triggers the liberation cutscene.
No death penalty: liberation progress does not reset if you die. You can respawn and return to pick up exactly where you left off.
Permanent results: once liberated, an area stays free. Enemies do not retake it. The map icon changes, and friendly NPCs, merchants, and resting points become available.
Liberation sites vary in scale and difficulty depending on the faction occupying them and the region of Pywel where they appear.
Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
Bandit Camps | Smaller outposts with a handful of enemies and one mini-boss. Typically the easiest sites, ideal for early-game artifact gauge farming. | Scattered camps across the Hernand countryside |
Blockaded Areas | Medium-scale sites where a hostile faction has set up a barricade restricting passage. Marked on the map with a "Blockaded" tag and faction name. Clearing these opens transit routes and new exploration zones. | Wolf Trackers Blockade |
Fortified Quarries | Industrial locations seized by bandits, often featuring destructible structures (infirmaries, barracks, warehouses) and a mechanical or heavily armored boss. | Karin Quarry (Bleed Bandits, boss: Marni's Excavatron) |
Outposts | Military outposts with gun-wielding enemies and tighter spaces. Beware ranged attacks and learn enemy skills like Clothesline by getting hit. | Vilkom Outpost (accessed via the Torn Encirclement quest) |
Strongholds and Castles | The largest and most difficult sites, involving full-scale battles with dozens of soldiers. Tied to faction questlines and major story beats. |
Every liberation event provides multiple overlapping rewards that feed into your broader progression.
The yellow bar to the left of the minimap is the artifact gauge. It fills whenever you eliminate enemies, and each time it completes you receive one Abyss Artifact, which functions as one skill point. Because liberation sites pack large numbers of enemies into a confined area, clearing them produces some of the fastest artifact gauge progress in the game. There is no cap on how many times the gauge can be filled, making liberation farming an unlimited source of skill points.
Liberating a stronghold awards massive Contribution XP with the region where the site is located. Contribution is a region-specific reputation economy; your standing in Hernand is tracked separately from Demeniss or Delesyia. Each filled Contribution bar grants a Contribution point that can be spent on exclusive accessories, armor sets, and other faction rewards from regional vendors.
Region | Sample Contribution Rewards | Cost Range |
|---|---|---|
Bolton Plate Set, Hernand Ceremonial Guard Set, Hernandian Barding, Signet | 4-70 Contribution points | |
Pailunese Attire, Ceremonial Plate Sets, Ring, Necklace, Crown | 15-70 Contribution points | |
Mortain Chainmail, Armor of Loyal Friendship, Dragon Flame Set, Sahazhad Set | 17-70 Contribution points |
After each liberation, any uncollected loot from the battlefield (dropped letters, recipes, gear, materials) is sent to the Supply Chest at Greymane Camp. This chest is located directly behind the quartermaster Carl at Howling Hill. As of patch 1.00.03, the Supply Chest has been renamed to Private Storage and holds up to 240 slots. You will not lose any items you missed during combat.
Liberation feeds resources and materials back into the Greymane Camp. The camp starts as a modest tent settlement and expands into a fortified base as you liberate territory, complete faction quests, and recruit new Greymane members. Camp upgrades unlock new facilities including a cooking station, blacksmith (Tranan), farming area, trading center, and additional companion recruits for dispatch missions.

Liberated areas undergo visible transformation. Residents return, merchants open stalls, safe resting points become available, and the map icon shifts from hostile red to a neutral or friendly marker. In some cases, liberating a site unlocks a nearby Abyss Nexus for fast travel and equipment refinement.
Hernand is the first major region you explore after establishing the Greymane Camp at Howling Hill. Several bandit camps are scattered across the countryside, and two of the game's most memorable liberation encounters take place here.
Site | Enemy Faction | Boss | |
|---|---|---|---|
Marni's Excavatron | Four destructible structures (Infirmary, Barracks, Timber Warehouse, main gate). Destroying the Infirmary prevents wounded enemies from re-entering the fight. Defeating the boss reveals a hidden area with a Palmar Pill. | ||
Garrison Commander | Gun-wielding enemies. Located north of Hook Rapids. Learn the Clothesline skill by getting hit by enemy moves. Triggered by the Torn Encirclement quest. | ||
Hernand Countryside Camps | Various bandits | Mini-bosses | Smaller camps ideal for early artifact gauge farming. Quick clears yield loot, XP, and faction reputation. |
Demeniss is the political and military capital of Pywel. As the seat of imperial power, it features grand fortified cities, military installations, and sweeping golden plains. Many of the game's large-scale siege battles take place in this region, and liberation encounters here tend to be among the most challenging.
After completing Chapter 7, you unlock the northern region of Pailune, the Greymanes' homeland that was seized by the Black Bears. Liberating sites in Pailune is central to the reconstruction arc, which introduces the Pailune Council and Pailune Institute. Black Bear outposts like Camp Bjornlund and Trovak Camp serve as staging grounds for military operations and can be targeted through the liberation system.
The outer regions feature faction-specific strongholds with unique combat challenges. Blockaded routes guarded by factions like the Wolf Trackers must be cleared before you can freely explore these areas. Liberation rewards here include some of the most valuable Contribution vendor gear in the game, such as the Dragon Flame and Sahazhad armor sets.
Liberation fights pit you against large groups of enemies and at least one boss. These tips will help you clear sites efficiently without burning through all your resources.

Destroy structures first. Target infirmaries, barracks, and warehouses before engaging the main enemy force. Use Turning Slash or other heavy attacks to demolish buildings. Each destroyed structure applies a debuff to remaining enemies.
Bring food. Cook Meat Skewers (one Meat plus one Fruit or Vegetable) at any campfire and assign them to your radial quick-select wheel. Food buffs to Health, Spirit, and Stamina provide a meaningful edge during extended liberation fights.
Use the party system. Summon a companion by holding Up on the D-Pad and selecting them from the Characters and Mounts wheel. Companions draw enemy aggro and deal solid damage, making large camps far more manageable. Note: companions cannot be used during main story quests, but work in all open-world liberation encounters.
Master parrying. Block right before an enemy attack lands to trigger a parry. Successful parries regenerate both stamina and spirit instantly, and they are especially effective at depleting boss guard bars. When a boss guard bar breaks, unload your strongest combo for massive damage.
Use Force Palm. This ability disrupts enemy attacks and reduces defenses, making it invaluable against tightly packed mobs during combat.
Fight from the edges. Lure small groups of enemies away from the main force using ranged attacks. This prevents you from being overwhelmed and lets you thin the herd before tackling the boss.
Exploit environmental destruction. Some sites have explosive barrels, collapsible scaffolding, or destructible walls that deal area damage when triggered. Use these to soften up groups of enemies before engaging directly.
Not every liberation has to be a solo affair. The Freesword Dispatch system, unlocked during Chapter 3 at Howling Hill through the Pioneering quest, lets you send Greymane recruits to soften up or fully clear hostile areas on your behalf.
How it works: speak to Luke at camp to access the dispatch screen. Assign recruits to a blockaded or hostile location. The mission runs passively in the background on in-game time.
Soldier requirements: you need sufficient recruits stationed at camp. Always send more than the minimum number for bonus rewards.
Partial clears: dispatch missions can reduce the number of enemies at a site before you visit it personally, making the final assault much easier.
Full clears: in some cases, your dispatched soldiers can fully liberate a site. You may still need to defeat the boss yourself.
Resource cost: dispatch missions require currency. You can donate silver and unwanted gear to Carl to fund camp operations.
Liberation is one of the pillars of an efficient skill point farming strategy. Here is how to batch it with other artifact sources for maximum returns.
Clear liberation sites. Start with the red-marked camps in your current region. The dense enemy packs fill the artifact gauge rapidly. Each completed gauge equals one free Abyss Artifact (one skill point).
Collect Sealed Abyss Artifacts. While traveling between liberation sites, watch for the purple minimap icon that appears near small stone altars. There are 141 Sealed Abyss Artifacts scattered across Pywel. Each one requires completing a challenge before it converts into a usable Abyss Artifact.
Complete Greymane Rumor quests. These are short escort or fetch tasks that reward one Abyss Artifact per quest. They have the best effort-to-payout ratio in the game.
Spend wisely. Abyss Artifacts are used for both skill unlocks and equipment refinement. Prioritize unlocking new attacks early on, since better damage output speeds up future farming by letting you kill enemy groups faster.
The Hernand countryside camps are ideal for early artifact gauge farming because the enemies are relatively weak and respawn or reset when you move between zones. Blockaded areas marked with red building icons on the map contain tightly packed groups that yield the most gauge progress per minute. A single liberation clearing in Hernand can fill the artifact gauge two to three times if the site has enough defenders.
During Chapter 3, a special farming opportunity exists near the Reed Devil boss. Enemy-spawning Totems create one of the highest-density kill zones in the game. However, this window vanishes permanently after defeating Reed Devil, since the boss fight destroys all nearby Totems and stops enemy respawns in that area.
Liberation is woven tightly into the Greymane questline. Many faction quests require you to liberate a specific site as their objective, and completing these quests advances the camp expansion arc.
Karin Quarry is unlocked through the "Estate in Dismay" faction quest (sub-quest: "Stolen Quarry"). Speak to House Roberts's Servant near Bluemont Manor south of the Notice Board in Hernand Town to start it.
Vilkom Outpost is liberated during the "Torn Encirclement" quest, which sends you north through Hook Rapids.
Camp expansions: the Bustling Hill quest requires dispatching soldiers for the Howling Hill expansion. Completing Greymane faction quests unlocks more recruits for dispatch and builds toward the camp's fourth and fifth expansion tiers.
Pailune reconstruction: after Chapter 7, liberating Black Bear outposts in Pailune feeds directly into large-scale reconstruction projects including the Pailune Council and Pailune Institute.
Completing all 27 Greymane Commissions rewards a total of 81 extra inventory slots through Medium Bag rewards, making them well worth pursuing alongside your liberation runs.
Always check the map for red icons before heading out. Planning a route through multiple liberation sites in the same region saves travel time and maximizes artifact gauge gains per session.
Wear the Scarlet Blades Cloth Armor or a gas mask looted from Bleed Bandit camps to disguise yourself. Bleed Bandits will not attack you on sight while disguised, giving you time to scout structures and plan your approach.
The artifact gauge fills faster when you chain kills without long breaks. Focus on clearing enemies in quick succession rather than picking them off one at a time.
After liberating Karin Quarry, operate the crane controls in the control room to extract a buried relic. This reveals a hidden area containing a Palmar Pill.
At liberation sites with high cliffs nearby, you can glide in from above to bypass ground-level defenders and reach the boss gate directly. This is especially useful at Karin Quarry, where you can skip straight to the Excavatron boss chamber.
Do not commit crimes (theft, assault, murder) in regions where you are building Contribution. Criminal actions drain Contribution points, and regaining lost levels does not re-award the original Contribution point rewards.
Purchase Abyss Artifacts from NPC vendors at 28.50 Silver each for a quick top-up when you are a single point away from a critical skill unlock.
