How it Works
Volcanic Eruption enhances your attacks with fiery projectiles. On its own, the ability provides solid damage amplification during combat. However, its true potential is unlocked when paired with fire-element imbuing through the Imbue Element system. When fire magic is active, Volcanic Eruption launches devastating fireballs that deal enormous damage, making it one of the most effective tools for melting boss health bars quickly.
How to Obtain
Volcanic Eruption comes pre-equipped on the Scorch Flame Plate Gloves. There are two ways to obtain gloves with this ability:
Twilight Grotto: The gloves can be found in a chest behind a waterfall at the Twilight Grotto in the Demeniss region. Use the Stab skill to charge through the waterfall to access the cave and the chest at the end.
Flame Knight's Castle: An additional pair of Scorch Flame Plate Gloves with Volcanic Eruption is rewarded after defeating the Flame Knight boss.
Waterfall Location Walkthrough
The Scorchflame Plate Gloves with Volcanic Eruption can be found hidden inside a waterfall south of the Hernand area. The route requires some navigation through the landscape:
From Hernand, travel over Rock-a-Hill heading towards the Tea of Rivers area.
Aim for the top lake in the region. When you arrive, look down into the valley.
You will see a waterfall to the left and a big crevasse in the terrain.
Aim for the left waterfall specifically.
Enter the waterfall itself to find a hidden cave behind it.
Inside the cave is a chest containing the Scorchflame Plate Gloves with the Volcanic Eruption ability.
The Scorchflame Plate Gloves provide 21 defense, which is notably better than standard plate gloves at 19 defense. Combined with the Volcanic Eruption abyss gear effect, they are among the most valuable early-game equipment discoveries in the Hernand region.
Location
Volcanic Eruption is found in the Hills of No Return, located in the top right of Hernand. Travel to the Tea of Rivers and arrive at the upper lake. Look for a waterfall to the left with a large crevasse below it. Head for the left waterfall and enter the cave. Use your stab ability on the glowing object inside to obtain Volcanic Eruption.
Boss Viability
Fire is widely considered the strongest element for boss encounters in Crimson Desert. Volcanic Eruption combined with Surrounding Explosions and Flames of Judgment hits bosses multiple times per activation, unlike Frost Hail (which spreads too far outward and often misses) or Lightning Orbs (which barely connect with single targets due to random targeting).
The fire debuff is also exceptional for crowd control: enemies affected by fire will fall to the ground and roll around, creating a continuous CC effect that keeps them locked down. Combined with the high direct damage of Volcanic Eruption, this makes fire the go-to element for both sustained boss DPS and controlling adds during boss fights.
Turning Slash Nuke Synergy
Volcanic Eruption is one of two fire-triggered Abyss Gear abilities that form the backbone of the Turning Slash Nuke Build. When a fire-imbued Turning Slash connects, Volcanic Eruption launches exploding volcanic fireballs while Flames of Judgment simultaneously sends out explosive spark lines. These two fire effects stack with the Turning Slash modifier effects in the weapon (Frost Spike, Ground Surge, Wound of Darkness), resulting in an enormous burst of damage from a single attack.
The combined fire effects are especially potent because they trigger simultaneously at point-blank range, dealing their full damage to the target while also catching nearby enemies in the AoE. The stagger buildup from hitting an enemy with this many effects at once frequently knocks bosses down or launches smaller enemies, creating openings for free follow-up attacks.
Socket Volcanic Eruption into your chest armor alongside a Turning Slash Damage modifier for the strongest possible synergy. The +35% Turning Slash Damage from Momentum amplifies the base hit, and Volcanic Eruption adds explosive AoE on top.
Recommended Builds
Volcanic Eruption is the centerpiece of fire-focused builds in Crimson Desert:
Turning Slash Nuke Build: The most powerful burst build in the game. Combine Volcanic Eruption with Flames of Judgment, three Turning Slash weapon effects, Momentum (+35% Turning Slash damage), and fire imbuing. See the full Turning Slash Nuke Build guide.
Fire Dragon Build: Combine the Scorch Flame Plate Gloves (Volcanic Eruption) with the Drake Shield (Draconic Retribution) and fire-imbued Turning Slash for an all-fire combat style.
Boss Killer: Imbue your weapon with fire element, then use heavy attacks to trigger Volcanic Eruption fireballs. The combination melts boss health bars faster than almost any other setup.
Full Scorchflame Set: Wear the complete Scorchflame Plate armor set for the dragon lord aesthetic while maximizing fire damage output.
Charged Shot Bow Build Synergy
Volcanic Eruption is not limited to melee builds. It also synergizes powerfully with fire-imbued Charged Shot and Elemental Charged Shot from the bow. When a fire-imbued charged shot connects, Volcanic Eruption triggers volcanic explosions just as it does with melee attacks. Combined with Flames of Judgment (from Eclipse Solace Plate Gloves, obtained after Chapter 8), a single ranged charged shot produces both volcanic fireballs and spark line explosions simultaneously.
For bow users, this synergy is even more impactful than for melee builds because the fire imbue on Charged Shot is applied automatically: just hold R2 with spirit available. Combined with a Focus Shot that fires multiple charged shots in rapid succession, Volcanic Eruption triggers on each hit. This turns Focus Shot into an AoE burst that can stagger or outright eliminate bosses in a single volley.
Eclipse Solace Plate Gloves
The Eclipse Solace Plate Gloves carry the Flames of Judgment abyss gear effect. They are obtained by beating Chapter 8's final fight. When worn alongside the Scorchflame Plate Gloves (or when both abilities are socketed onto your gear), every fire-imbued attack triggers both Volcanic Eruption and Flames of Judgment. The two effects stack multiplicatively, making any fire-imbued ability significantly more powerful.
Community Assessment
Volcanic Eruption is widely described by experienced players as arguably the best elemental Abyss Gear in the game. Players with over 200 hours of playtime consistently rank it at the top of their gear lists due to its ability to generate secondary damage, crowd control, and extra stagger on every fire-damage hit.
Meteor Kick Synergy
One of the most spectacular interactions involves performing a charged meteor kick from above into a group of enemies. When Volcanic Eruption is equipped, the fire damage from the kick triggers a cascade of flaming rocks that scatter in all directions, producing fire damage and actual secondary explosions on impact. This makes the aerial kick one of the best openers against large groups of enemies, since the initial hit plus the Volcanic Eruption proc staggers and damages everything nearby.
Combined with Momentum (+35% Turning Slash damage), the Turning Slash becomes what players call a "one-shot staggering death machine." The flat 35% damage bonus from Momentum stacks multiplicatively with the fire explosions from Volcanic Eruption, so each Turning Slash does its boosted base damage and then showers the area with flaming rocks that stagger and burn survivors.
Fire Crowd Control
The fire element carries an additional advantage over lightning and frost: burning enemies drop to the ground and roll around while taking continuous damage. This fire CC is functionally similar to lightning's stagger and frost's shatter effects, but the rolling animation locks enemies in place for a longer window, giving you time to reposition or chain additional attacks. The sustained damage-over-time also finishes off weakened enemies without requiring follow-up hits.
For the recommended offensive build, Volcanic Eruption is best placed in the helm slot, freeing the armor slot for Momentum and the glove slot for Relentless.
Source Summary (Easy Farm)
Volcanic Eruption is one of the easiest boss-slayer finisher abyss gears to farm. The Scorchflame Plate Gloves that ship with the abyss gear pre-socketed are found in a chest behind the waterfall at Twilight Grotto. The pickup only needs a short travel to the grotto and a dive through the waterfall, which makes it feasible to grab Volcanic Eruption long before the player is at the full boss-slayer gearing stage. Once the Scorchflame Plate Gloves are in the inventory, extract the abyss gear at a witch merchant to free it for use in any armor slot.
Global Effect (Boss-Slayer Builds)
Volcanic Eruption shares the same global trigger behavior as Flames of Judgment. The abyss gear does not care which weapon the player swings, and it can be socketed onto any armor piece without losing its effect. Every time a fire-imbued attack connects, Volcanic Eruption has a chance to launch a fireball that deals a significant chunk of bonus damage and fills a meaningful portion of the boss's stagger bar. Because the effect triggers off the imbuement buff rather than a specific weapon or animation, players can still leverage it during bow weaves, turning slash finishers, and full two-handed combos.
Socketing Recommendation
In the canonical boss-slayer loadout, Volcanic Eruption is typically socketed onto the boots slot while Flames of Judgment takes the gloves slot. Splitting the two fire-triggered global abyss gears across different armor pieces keeps both riders live at the same time whenever a Flame Imbuement (or any attack imbued through the Imbue Element menu) is active. The pair is one of the primary reasons the build can stack Stagger Bar fills quickly during boss phase transitions. For the full rotation notes, see the Boss Slayer Build Guide.
Tips
Always imbue your weapon with fire before engaging bosses to maximize Volcanic Eruption's damage output.
The fireballs have a slight homing effect, making them reliable even against mobile targets.
Pair with the Scorchflame Plate Cloak and other fire resistance gear for a thematically consistent and effective build.
The Twilight Grotto version can be obtained early in the game without any boss fights, giving you access to this powerful ability from the start.
Volcanic Eruption only triggers on fire-imbued attacks. If you switch to another element for boss weakness exploitation, the fireballs will not activate. Plan your element choice accordingly.
When combined with Flames of Judgment, every fire-imbued attack produces both volcanic fireballs and spark explosions. This dramatically increases the Spirit cost of your rotation, so invest in Spirit Regen and Spirit Siphon to sustain it.

Scorch Flame Plate Gloves Source
Volcanic Eruption is extracted from Scorch Flame Plate Gloves, which sit in a chest inside a waterfall cave between the Hernand and Demeniss Region regions. Head down to the waterfall, then use the stab ability to break through the rock surface and enter the hidden cave behind the water. The chest with the gloves is inside. Take the gloves to a witch if you want the abyss gear on a different body slot.
Two Handed Sword Build Role
Volcanic Eruption is the glove slot for the end-game two-handed sword build because it is the elemental abyss gear that pairs with elemental turning slash. It requires fire imbue (unlocked by ascending the Spire of Ringing Truth) and the elemental turning slash skill to be active. Combined with Momentum on the helm, it is the main reason the turning slash rotation deletes bosses: it lands massive damage, applies a burn, and can stagger even boss-tier enemies. A common troubleshooting note: if Volcanic Eruption is not triggering, start a normal turning slash first and press the follow-up input listed in the skill description during the animation to activate the elemental version. On Xbox controller that is RB plus RT for turning slash, then LT during the animation.
Community Tier List Rating (Volcanic Eruption)
A community tier list of every Abyss Gear published by a Crimson Desert content creator scores each gear out of 30 across damage, usability, and utility. Scores between 20 and 24 land in A tier.
Axis | Score | Note |
|---|---|---|
Damage | 8 / 10 | Consistent damage on every proc, sits just below S-tier impact. |
Usability | 8 / 10 | Centered on the player, no aiming required, easy to land in any positioning. |
Utility | 8 / 10 | Good AoE coverage, contributes to stagger pressure during boss fights. |
Total | 24 / 30 | A Tier |
Within the fire element category, Volcanic Eruption is the standout pick. The community summary puts it at the top of A tier and notes that the only reason it is not in S tier is that it does not chunk enemies the way the highest-rated gears (such as Greysoul Howling, Spirit's Judgment, or Shattering Frost) do. It is consistent and reliable, but the per-proc impact is one tier below the very best.
The same list ranks Flames of Judgment in B tier as the second fire element gear. Volcanic Eruption clearly outperforms it, which is why most community fire builds anchor on Volcanic Eruption first and only add Flames of Judgment as a secondary fire trigger if the boots and gloves are both free for fire imbuement coverage.
Pairing Recommendations
Community tier lists unanimously pair Volcanic Eruption with Flames of Judgment as the backbone of the strongest fire build in the current meta. The pairing works because each gear hits a different layer of the combat system: Flames of Judgment ticks spark damage on every hit, and Volcanic Eruption adds a single large poise-damage explosion that knocks bosses out of their upright animations.
Pair with Fire Imbue: Volcanic Eruption requires Fire Element to be active. Swapping elements leaves the gear dormant even if it stays in the bracelet.
Pair with Flames of Judgment: This is the default S-plus-tier setup. Slot both gears at once for continuous spark pressure plus periodic molten-boulder explosions. Every content creator with public boss-kill footage runs some version of this pairing.
Pair with Flame Strike: Flame Strike launches a spammable fireball with negligible spirit cost. Fanning Flame Strike casts across a mob group while Volcanic Eruption provides the single-target AoE turns any room into an empty battlefield.
Pair with Meteor Kick and Turning Slash: Volcanic Eruption stacks naturally with Meteor Kick and Turning Slash nukes because both moves produce their own AoE windows that the erupting boulders can land inside. Community creators describe this combination as the closest thing the game currently offers to a one-shot build.
Pair with Charged Shot bow: Combine a zero-arrow-consumption bow using Charged Shot at max crit rate with Volcanic Eruption and Flames of Judgment. A single focus salvo can stun nearly any opponent in the game, and the erupting fireballs finish whatever the focus shot does not outright kill.
