Fishing in Windrose is part of the game's broader resource gathering and food system. As a pirate survival game set across an ocean archipelago, water-based activities are a natural fit for the gameplay loop. The demo released during Steam Next Fest in February 2026 included some aquatic food sources, though a full-featured fishing minigame was not present in the demo build.
Aquatic Food Sources in the Demo
While the demo did not feature a dedicated fishing rod or fishing minigame, players could interact with aquatic wildlife. Crabs are found along shorelines on the starting island and can be killed for trophies that serve as comfort decorations at your base. Coastal Dodos, found near beaches, drop meat that can be cooked into broth or other recipes.
The ocean itself plays a major role in Windrose through naval travel and combat rather than fishing. Players spend significant time sailing between islands, engaging in ship-to-ship battles, and boarding enemy vessels. The sea is more of a highway and a battlefield than a resource pool in the current build.
Potential for a Full Fishing System
Windrose is planned for Steam Early Access in 2026, with the demo representing only a small slice of the intended content. The developers at Windrose Crew have indicated that additional gameplay systems will be added throughout the Early Access period. Many survival games in the genre, including Valheim, Palworld, and Raft, have fishing mechanics, and the pirate setting makes fishing an obvious candidate for a future update.
The game already has the infrastructure to support fishing. A cooking system with recipe discovery exists. Aquatic environments are everywhere. NPCs can be recruited to assist with resource gathering at settlements. Adding a fishing rod as a craftable tool and populating the ocean with catchable fish would integrate naturally with these existing systems.
Related Food Gathering
In the absence of a fishing minigame, players gather food through other means:
Hunting: Kill Dodos, Boars, and other animals for meat
Foraging: Collect coconuts, bananas, peppers, and herbs from the environment
Looting: Find food items in pirate camps, dungeons, and shipwrecks
Cooking: Combine gathered ingredients at a Cooking Fire into buffing meals
Farming: Basic farming and NPC-assisted harvesting at your settlement
Ocean Activities
While fishing is not yet a core mechanic, the ocean provides plenty of content:
Naval combat against pirate ships and coastal forts
Ship customization with cannons, hull bracing, and boarding gear
Island discovery through procedurally generated archipelago exploration
Trading with faction merchants for supplies and equipment
Underwater exploration near shipwrecks (limited in the demo)
Community Requests
Fishing has been one of the most requested features in the Steam Community discussions for Windrose. Players have pointed out that the pirate setting, combined with the existing cooking system, makes fishing a natural addition. The developers have been responsive to community feedback throughout the demo period, so fishing is a strong candidate for future content updates.
This article will be updated as new information about fishing becomes available through Early Access patches and developer communications.
