This article has been recognized for its exceptional quality and comprehensive coverage.
Windrose is planned for Steam Early Access in 2026. The exact release date has not been announced. The developers have stated they are "not holding this information to tease your anticipation" but want "to ship the game on time and in the best condition possible." The game launched a free demo during Steam Next Fest on February 17, 2026, which generated significant player interest and overwhelmingly positive reviews.
The Steam Next Fest demo produced striking numbers:
Metric | Value |
|---|---|
Peak concurrent players | 22,000+ (February 22, 2026), top 20 demo of all time on Steam |
Steam reviews | 93% positive from over 3,000 reviews |
Steam wishlists | 1,000,000+, placing it among Steam's top 20 most-wishlisted games |
Demo gameplay | 4 to 6 hours across three islands, the first ship, and initial quests |
Platforms | Steam and Epic Games Store |
The demo covers the opening section of the game: starting from being shipwrecked, gathering basic resources, building a shelter, acquiring your first ship, and exploring the first three islands. Naval combat and boarding are available. Demo progress does not carry over to Early Access. Players who play the demo before Early Access launch receive an exclusive decorative spyglass cosmetic redeemable in the full game.
Windrose is buy-to-play with no microtransactions or live-service monetization. This is a deliberate choice following the pivot from the original Crosswind free-to-play MMO model. The price has not been announced.
On February 25, 2026, a new "Raging Seas" trailer premiered at IGN Fan Fest. The trailer showcased upcoming Early Access content including Tortuga as a playable location, additional ships, new weapons and armor, expanded building pieces, and new enemy types. No specific release date was revealed.
The Early Access version is expected to include significantly more content than the demo, including:
Tortuga as a fully explorable hub location
Additional biomes beyond the starting area and Ashlands
Dedicated servers for persistent co-op worlds
Expanded talent tree and character progression
More dungeons, bosses, and story content
Additional ship types and customization options
New weapons and armor sets
Quality-of-life improvements based on demo feedback
A new biome already in conceptual development
Before the demo, Windrose Crew ran an alpha playtest under the Crosswind name starting June 25, 2025. Over 20,000 alpha keys were distributed. The alpha offered roughly 30 hours of content across three biomes, three bosses, and three ship types. The alpha provided the data that informed the pivot from MMO to PvE co-op.
Early Access launches on PC via both Steam (App ID: 3041230) and the Epic Games Store. Console versions are described as "possibly following later," with PC remaining the priority. The focus during Early Access is refining the PC version based on player feedback before expanding to other platforms.
Spec | Minimum | Recommended |

GPU | GTX 1080 Ti / RX 6800 | RTX 3080 / RX 6800 XT |
Storage | 30 GB | 30 GB SSD |
DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
System requirements are not final. Self-hosting a co-op server requires additional RAM beyond the stated minimums. If performance is an issue, lowering shadow quality provides the biggest FPS improvement based on community testing.
The game supports 12 languages: English, German, Russian, Simplified Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), and Turkish.
Official mod support is planned for the future but will not be available at Early Access launch. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5, and the community has already begun creating mods using the default UE5 pak format. Existing community mods for the demo include an intro skipper, player speed adjustments, stamina modifications, and camera tweaks.
