Overview
In Pokemon Pokopia, you can have a befriended Pokemon follow you around your town. The Pokemon's specialty determines what passive benefit it provides while following you. Some specialties are significantly more useful than others when active in a following role. This guide ranks all specialties from best to worst for the following feature.
Tier Rankings
SS Tier (Best)
Specialty | Effect When Following | Pokemon |
|---|---|---|
Search | Locates valuable items using a Dowsing Machine while exploring biomes and Dream Islands. Finds Lost Relics, CDs, Mysterious Slates, and Dolls. | Check specialty guide for full list |
Storage | Increases your inventory capacity, letting you carry more items during exploration and crafting sessions. | Gulpin, Swalot |
DJ | Plays background music from CDs you have collected. Stores 5 CDs at a time and plays them in order from left to right. Follows you anywhere. | Rotom (DJ Rotom) |
Search is the single best following specialty because it actively discovers rare and valuable items as you explore. Lost Relics are especially valuable collectibles, and CDs expand your music library. Storage is a close second because extra inventory space is always useful. DJ is ranked SS because music enhances the gameplay experience, though it is purely cosmetic.
S Tier (Excellent)
Specialty | Effect When Following |
|---|---|
Grow | Accelerates plant growth for crops and flowers near your path |
Burn | Assists with smelting ores and powering fire-based machines |
Gather | Helps collect resources and materials in the area |
Water | Waters crops and supports hydration-based tasks |
Generate | Powers up electrical machines and items nearby |
These are the basic farming and resource specialties. They provide steady, practical benefits for everyday gameplay like tending crops, smelting ores, powering machines, and gathering resources. While not as impactful as the SS tier, they are consistently useful throughout the entire game.
A Tier (Good)
Specialty | Effect When Following |
|---|---|
Build | Assists with construction of buildings, houses, and Pokemon Centers |
Bulldoze | Helps with relocation and clearing terrain obstacles |
Explode | Assists with demolition of structures |
Fly | Enables fast travel to a missing Pokemon's location |
Teleport | Enables fast travel to a missing Pokemon's location |
Hype | Improves the mood of nearby Pokemon by dancing; best paired with the DJ specialty |
Build, Bulldoze, and Explode are quite rare specialties with few Pokemon possessing them, making them situationally valuable during construction projects. Fly and Teleport are somewhat disappointing as following specialties because they only provide fast travel to missing Pokemon rather than general fast travel or aerial exploration. Hype is a fun cosmetic specialty that makes nearby Pokemon dance and improves their mood.
Recommendations
For exploration and Dream Islands: Use a Search specialist. The Dowsing Machine finds hidden items you would otherwise miss, making every outing more productive.
For general town management: Use a Storage specialist (Gulpin or Swalot). The extra inventory space means fewer trips back to your storage box.
For farming: Use a Grow or Water specialist to speed up crop production while you tend to other tasks.
For ambiance: Use DJ Rotom to enjoy your collected CDs while playing. Pair it with a Hype specialist nearby for a musical atmosphere where Pokemon dance.
How to Have a Pokemon Follow You
To have a Pokemon follow you, interact with it and select the option to have it follow. The Pokemon must be befriended first. You can switch which Pokemon follows you at any time. Only one Pokemon can follow you at a time, so choose the specialty that best fits your current activity.
Tips
Switch your following Pokemon based on what you are doing. Use Search when exploring, Storage when gathering materials, and Grow when farming.
Gulpin and Swalot are the only Pokemon with the Storage specialty. They are found in the Tantalizing Dining Set and Dinner Table Surprise habitats respectively.
DJ Rotom is the only Pokemon with the DJ specialty. It can store 5 CDs and plays them sequentially while following you.
The Hype specialty works best when combined with DJ Rotom playing music nearby, creating a lively atmosphere in your town.
