Overview
Crimson Desert features a variety of competitive minigames scattered across Pywel. Among the most popular are the duel and contest events, which pit Kliff (and occasionally Damiane) against NPC opponents in structured, one-on-one competitions. These range from bare-knuckle boxing and spear fighting to wrestling matches, archery contests, firearms shooting competitions, and arm wrestling.
Each event enforces strict rules that restrict the player's moveset, forcing them to master the specific mechanics of that activity. Using unauthorized weapons, abilities, or stepping outside the competition boundary results in immediate disqualification and forfeiture of the entry fee.
Victories in these events earn Copper or Silver, faction relationship points, items, and progress toward Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges. Several events also tie directly into the Duel Challenges and Test of Strength Challenges, both of which count toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement.
Universal Tournament Rules
All competitive events in Crimson Desert share a common set of regulations. Understanding these rules before entering any event will save time and money.
Entry fee required: Every event requires a buy-in. If you win, you get your money back along with a profit. If you lose, the entry fee is forfeited.
Restricted movesets: Each event limits what actions are allowed. Triggering an unauthorized ability, equipping a forbidden weapon, or using a banned move results in instant disqualification.
Boundary enforcement: Stepping outside the designated competition area for an extended period causes immediate disqualification.
Champion encounters: Champions only appear after winning three consecutive matches in a standard event. Defeating a champion may permanently close that particular venue.
Streak resets: Losing any match during a streak resets the count to zero. You must start over from the first match.
Unarmed Duel: Boxing
Unarmed Duel: Boxing is a bare-knuckle fighting competition held at the Goldenfist Arena in the Hernand region. Each match costs 30 Copper to enter. Participants fight using nothing but their fists; leg sweeps, kicks, body slams, and all weapons are prohibited. The first competitor to deplete their opponent's health bar wins the round.
How It Works
To enter an unarmed duel, open the weapon wheel and equip only gloves. This puts Kliff into unarmed mode. Then speak with the fight host at the arena to begin. You will face a series of opponents one at a time. Win three consecutive matches to trigger the champion encounter in the fourth round.
Strategy and Tips
Lock on immediately. Activating the lock-on feature keeps Kliff centered on the opponent and prevents you from swinging at empty air.
Sidestep, do not backstep. When the enemy winds up for a punch, dodge to the left or right. Dodging backward is a common mistake that leaves you perfectly aligned to catch the second hit of their combo.
Keep combos short. Land two or three hits, then back away. Champions block frequently and will punish overcommitted combos.
Armor still matters. Your defensive stats carry over into the boxing ring. If you are taking massive damage from a single punch, visit the blacksmith and upgrade your gear before trying again.
Block as a fallback. When dodge timing fails, blocking reduces incoming damage. It does not eliminate it entirely, but it buys time to reposition.
Duel Challenges
The Duel Challenges are a set of 5 challenges under the Minigame category, all tied to unarmed combat. The first challenge, Steel Fist 1, unlocks automatically during Chapter 4 of the main story through the "Disturbance at the Arena" quest. Each Steel Fist challenge requires winning a streak of consecutive matches followed by defeating a champion.
Challenge | Objective | How to Unlock | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Steel Fist 1 | Win 3 unarmed duels in a row, then beat the champion | Automatically during Chapter 4 "Daily Life" sub-chapter | Money |
Steel Fist 2 | Win streak and beat the champion | After completing Steel Fist 1 | Money |
Steel Fist 3 | Win streak and beat the champion | Progressive unlock | Money |
Steel Fist 4 | Win streak and beat the champion | Progressive unlock | Money |
Steel Fist 5 | Win streak and beat the champion | Progressive unlock | Money |
Weapon Duel: Spear
Weapon Duel: Spear is a one-on-one combat event held in Hernand Town. Unlike boxing, competitors bring their own personal weapon to the fight, while opponents use standard-issue equipment. Each match costs 45 Copper. Only spears are allowed; drawing any other weapon results in disqualification.
How It Works
The spear duel takes place in a large rectangular arena that provides plenty of room to maneuver. The contest is a straightforward health-depletion fight. Competitors face off one at a time, and a three-win streak triggers the champion encounter.
Strategy and Tips
Leverage your gear advantage. Since you bring your own weapon while opponents use standard equipment, a well-upgraded spear gives you a significant edge. The Alfonso Spear (acquired through House of Spears quests) is particularly effective.
Stay aggressive. Do not let the opponent start a long combo string. Hit first, maintain pressure, and push opponents toward the edge of the arena boundary.
Use forward dodges. When cornered, a forward dodge helps escape sweeping attacks and repositions you behind the opponent.
Unlock dodge upgrades. Make sure your dodge upgrade skills are unlocked for reliable evasion. Without them, evading sweep attacks can be inconsistent.
Control spacing. The spear's long reach is its greatest strength. Keep opponents at the tip of your weapon and punish them when they try to close the distance.
Wrestling Matches
Wrestling matches are grapple-only competitions where Kliff faces opponents using professional-wrestling-style moves. The wrestling pit is located in Kharonso, and each match costs 1 Silver to enter. This is the most expensive entry fee among the duel events, reflecting the higher stakes involved.
How It Works
Wrestling relies entirely on grapple moves. The game is incredibly strict about button inputs during these matches. If you accidentally input a basic strike instead of a grapple, or execute a sloppy combo, you are disqualified instantly and lose your Silver buy-in. Only grappling moves count as legal actions.
Like other duel events, winning three consecutive matches triggers a champion encounter. Defeating the champion earns the Wrestling Match Champion Trophy. Be aware that beating the champion permanently closes this particular venue.
Wrestling Moves
Wrestling moves are unlocked through the skill tree. The Lariat is unlocked by investing one Abyss Artifact into the Grappling Skill node, which sits directly below the Unarmed Combat node. Sub-skills within the grappling tree must be unlocked in the exact clockwise order presented in the node.
Confirmed wrestling moves include the Lariat, suplexes, chokeslams, hammer throws, body slams, the Neckbreaker, the Giant Swing, and various back-breaking throws. For players simply trying to secure the trophy and complete the event, the Lariat and basic throws are the safest and most effective options.
Tips
Practice before competing. Consider intentionally losing a few matches to practice executing different grapple moves before committing to a real championship run.
Stick to reliable moves. The Lariat and basic throws are safe, easy to execute, and highly effective for beating the champion.
Precision matters. Every input must be a grapple command. A single stray punch or kick means instant disqualification.
Shot Contest: Bow
The Shot Contest: Bow is an archery competition held at Lioncrest Manor in the Hernand region. Kliff competes head-to-head against a sharpshooter in a race to hit 10 wooden targets before the opponent does. Each match costs 80 Copper to enter. Rewards increase with consecutive victories.
How It Works
Targets appear at random positions across the field. You hold the draw button to aim, then release to shoot. The first competitor to land 10 hits wins the round. Abilities such as Focused Shot are not allowed; the contest is purely a test of raw aim and reflexes.
Tips
Maximize camera settings. Open the options menu and set camera speed and camera acceleration to maximum. This is the only reliable way to snap your crosshair between targets fast enough to beat the NPC opponents, who have extremely fast reflexes.
Reset settings afterward. The maximum camera sensitivity that helps in shot contests will cause motion sickness during normal exploration. Remember to return your settings to normal after finishing.
Stay calm and consistent. Missing a target costs more time than taking an extra fraction of a second to aim properly. Quick, accurate shots beat frantic spraying.
Shot Contest: Gun
The Shot Contest: Gun is the firearms counterpart to the bow contest. It takes place in Hernand Town and is played as Damiane rather than Kliff. Each match costs 1 Silver. The format is identical to the bow contest: race to hit 10 randomly appearing targets before your opponent.
Tips
The same camera speed trick from the bow contest applies here. Crank camera speed and acceleration to maximum before entering. Firearms have different handling characteristics than bows, so expect a slightly different aiming feel. The core strategy remains the same: prioritize accuracy over speed, since missed shots waste more time than careful aiming.
Arm Wrestling
Arm Wrestling is a strength-based minigame found at the inn in Hernand Castle. The first match is free during the "Where Rumors Gather" quest in the Trials of Kindness arc. After that, replaying costs 20 Alms.
How It Works
Arm wrestling uses a two-phase input system that alternates throughout the match.
Button mashing phase: Rapidly press the action button (E on keyboard, X on Xbox, Square on PlayStation) to overpower your opponent and push the meter in your favor.
Timing gauge phase: A circular gauge appears periodically. Stop mashing and wait for the needle to enter the grey zone, then press the timing button (R on keyboard, A on Xbox, X on PlayStation). Hitting the zone perfectly gives a large advantage; missing it can swing momentum to your opponent.
Repeat these two phases until the arm wrestling bar fills completely in your favor (white). If the bar fills in the opponent's favor, you lose.
Hero's Handshake Challenges
Arm wrestling has its own set of 4 challenges called Hero's Handshake, categorized under Test of Strength Challenges. Completing all 4 contributes toward the True Gamer trophy.
Challenge | Objective | Location | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Hero's Handshake 1 | Win 3 arm wrestling matches in a row, then beat the champion | Inn at Hernand Castle | Money |
Hero's Handshake 2 | Win streak and beat the champion | To be confirmed | To be confirmed |
Hero's Handshake 3 | Win streak and beat the champion | To be confirmed | To be confirmed |
Hero's Handshake 4 | Win streak and beat the champion | To be confirmed | To be confirmed |
Tips
Pace yourself. Matches become increasingly difficult as rounds progress. The champion in the fourth round is significantly harder than the first three opponents.
Watch for the gauge. Timing and rhythm matter more than raw button mashing speed. Nailing the timing gauge prompts consistently is the difference between winning and losing against tougher opponents.
Winning the champion earns an Abyss Artifact. Defeating the champion in the Hero's Handshake challenge rewards an Abyss Artifact, which can be invested into skill unlocks or upgrades.
Rewards and Progression
Each duel and contest event rewards the player differently depending on the activity and performance. Here is a summary of the main rewards.
Event | Entry Fee | Location | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
30 Copper | Goldenfist Arena | Money, Unarmed Duel Champion Trophy | |
45 Copper | Hernand Town | Money, Spear Duel Champion Trophy | |
Wrestling Match | 1 Silver | Kharonso | Money, Wrestling Match Champion Trophy |
80 Copper | Copper (increases with consecutive wins) | ||
1 Silver | Hernand Town | Money, Shooting Contest Champion Trophy | |
Free / 20 Alms | Hernand Castle Inn | Money, Abyss Artifact (champion) |
Beyond direct monetary rewards, victories earn faction relationship points and contribute toward challenge completion. Completing all 5 Duel Challenges and all 4 Test of Strength Challenges (Hero's Handshake) is required for the True Gamer trophy and achievement.
