Overview
Shields in Crimson Desert serve both defensive and offensive roles. Mastering shield combat lets you block incoming attacks, parry for counterattack openings, and bash enemies into stagger states. Shields also have durability, which means managing when to block and when to dodge is critical for longer fights.
Blocking
Hold the guard button (L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox, Right Click on PC) to raise your shield and lock onto a target. While blocking, most attacks deal reduced damage. Red-glint attacks cannot be parried but can still be blocked with a shield, making shields especially valuable against aggressive enemies and bosses that use unparryable moves.
Blocking drains your shield's durability. Heavy attacks drain more durability than light attacks. Once a shield's durability reaches zero, it breaks, causing Kliff to stagger significantly on each blocked hit until you repair or replace it at a blacksmith.
Parrying
Tap the guard button right as an enemy's attack is about to connect to execute a parry. This requires the Keen Senses skill to be enhanced using Abyss Artifacts. The Parry sub-ability is part of the Keen Senses skill line.
A successful parry produces a distinct sound cue and a visual glint.
Parrying restores Stamina and Spirit, making it both a defensive and resource-generating move.
A successful parry pushes the enemy backward and freezes them briefly, creating roughly a two-second window where they are completely open for a combo.
Parries fill the enemy's stagger gauge faster than normal attacks.
You cannot parry red-glint attacks. When you see the red glow on an enemy's weapon, dodge instead of attempting to parry.
Counter Attacks
The Counter skill is also part of the Keen Senses skill line but requires upgrading Keen Senses to Level 3 by spending two Abyss Artifacts. Alternatively, you can learn Counter by observing it in action during combat rather than spending artifacts.
To counter, attack right before an enemy's strike connects instead of blocking. A successful counter interrupts the enemy mid-swing and triggers a slow-motion slash animation that deals heavy damage.
Perfect Dodge
Press B (Xbox), Circle (PlayStation), or Space (PC) to dodge. A perfectly timed dodge triggers a visual cue similar to a parry and restores Spirit and Stamina, giving you resources for an immediate counterattack.
Shield Durability
Shields lose durability when blocking attacks, especially heavy hits. A broken shield causes Kliff to stagger much more when blocking. Repair or replace shields at a blacksmith. Keep a backup shield in your inventory for extended combat sessions or dungeon crawls.
Tips
Mix blocking and dodging. Blocking everything drains your shield's durability fast. Dodge heavy attacks and block lighter ones to preserve your shield.
Use parries against normal enemies to generate Spirit, then spend that Spirit on powerful abilities against tougher foes.
Practice the parry timing on weaker enemies before attempting it against bosses. The window is tight but consistent.
The Counter skill is one of the most damage-efficient moves in the game. Invest in Keen Senses Level 3 early if you favor a defensive playstyle.
Shield bashing (attack while blocking) staggers enemies and creates openings, but it also costs a chunk of shield durability.
Before a boss fight, sharpen your weapon at a Grindstone and repair your shield at a blacksmith for maximum durability.
