Overview
Golden Apple is a miscellaneous item in Crimson Desert. It is a strange fruit that is visible only to hedgehogs. The Golden Apple Tree cannot be seen with human eyes, so finding one requires watching the ground for hedgehogs rather than looking at trees. If you spot a glimmering light atop a hedgehog's back, follow it to discover the fruit.
In-game description: "A strange fruit visible only to hedgehogs. The Golden Apple Tree can't be seen with human eyes, so if you want to get a Golden Apple, you'll need to watch the ground as you move around, not the trees. If you see a glimmering light atop a hedgehog's back, do not lose sight of it; follow wherever it leads."
How to Farm
Golden Apples are found on the backs of golden hedgehogs. These rare animals have a roughly 1 in 5 spawn rate among regular animal spawns at certain locations.
Primary Farming Location
The most efficient farming spot is at Gray Rock Dock, located just above Demeniss near the Hills of No Return. Liberate the area first by clearing all enemies. The ideal spot is the corner of a house next to a pumpkin patch.
Farming Procedure
Run around the house in a loop to reset the animal spawns in the area.
Watch for a golden hedgehog among the rats, porcupines, and raccoons that appear. Roughly 1 in 5 spawn cycles produces one.
Shoot the golden hedgehog with a bow. Alternatively, pick it up and drop it on the ground, then shoot it.
The hedgehog drops a Golden Apple. Equip a mask before picking it up.
Important: Picking up a Golden Apple is classified as stealing, which triggers a red ring indicator. A mask is required to avoid consequences. Masks can be purchased from vendors in Hernand or looted from bandits. After collecting the apple, leave the immediate area to clear the stealing alert.
If spawns stop appearing, try despawning your pet or companion dog, as they can occasionally interfere with the spawn cycle. This method produces approximately one Golden Apple every two minutes.
Uses
Each Golden Apple can be combined with 3 Gold Ore at any witch vendor to craft a Gold Bar. Gold Bars are among the most valuable items in the game, used for accumulating wealth quickly or gifting to NPC vendors for instant 100 NPC Trust.
Uses
Golden Apples are used as an ingredient in one of the Gold Bar crafting recipes at a Witch NPC:
Golden Apples were long considered one of the rarest items in Crimson Desert, but the Gray Rock Dock spawn area (covered below) now allows consistent farming. The Brimstone/Mercury/Silver Ore recipe (3 Brimstone + 3 Mercury + 10 Silver Ore) is still an alternative if you prefer not to farm hedgehogs, but the Golden Apple recipe is now competitive with pickpocketing and other Gold Bar sources.
How to Find
Look for hedgehogs while exploring the open world. When a hedgehog has a glimmering light on its back, follow it carefully without losing sight. The hedgehog will lead you to a Golden Apple Tree that is otherwise invisible. Golden Apples obtained this way are uncommon, making them a supplementary rather than primary ingredient for Gold Bar crafting.
Gray Rock Dock Farm
The most reliable location for farming Golden Apples is Gray Rock Dock, a small riverside spot northwest of Demeniss along the river. For a long time the Golden Apple was considered one of the rarest items in the game, with players reporting hundreds of hours of play before finding a single one. Gray Rock Dock changed that by offering a fixed spawn area where multiple hedgehogs with Golden Apples appear and respawn within minutes, making this the first truly repeatable farm for the item.
How to Get There
The closest fast travel point sits southwest of the dock on the map. From that fast travel point, you can simply run toward the cliff edge, leap off, and use aerial Force Palms to glide the rest of the way down. Gray Rock Dock is within visible distance from the fast travel point, so you can also mark it on your map before you leap to keep the location framed on your screen during the descent.
The surrounding mountains contain a few crystal mines, so if you are already making the trip it is worth stocking up on crafting materials while you are in the area.
Farming the Hedgehogs
Once you reach Gray Rock Dock, head down the road to the first turn. The corner just past the bend is the main spawn point for Golden Apple hedgehogs. At least two hedgehogs can spawn in this small area at any given time, and occasionally two will appear at once, which requires quick shots before they scurry off.
Forcing Respawns
The spawn point resets through a simple proximity trick. Run from the corner up the path, touch or skim past a large rock a short distance away, then run straight back. This short loop counts as enough distance traveled to force the local wildlife to respawn. You do not need to fast travel, rest at a fire, or walk all the way across the map. Just bounce between the rock and the corner a few times and a new hedgehog will appear.
The respawn pool is shared with other small animals. Expect to see porcupines, weasels, and moles appear alongside the hedgehogs. If a loop produces only a weasel or a porcupine, run back to the rock and try again. It usually only takes one or two resets before a Golden Apple hedgehog shows up. You can recognize the target instantly because it is the only animal in the pool that has a shining Golden Apple on its back.
Best Time of Day
Testing at this spot shows that the 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in-game time window gives the best spawn rates. Hedgehogs with Golden Apples do not appear to spawn at night. Roughly 40 minutes of respawning during nighttime hours produced zero Golden Apple hedgehogs in testing, while daytime runs consistently produced drops. Earlier morning hours (around 9 to 10 AM) still work, but late afternoon is noticeably better, so advance the in-game clock toward evening if you want to maximize throughput.
Collecting the Apples
Killing or Dropping the Hedgehog
The easiest way to separate a hedgehog from its Golden Apple is to shoot it with a bow. There is very little aim assist on targets this small, so bring a bow you are comfortable with. If you struggle to land arrows on a moving hedgehog, walk up to it, pick it up, then drop it. A dropped hedgehog stays still for a couple of seconds, giving you a clean window to line up the shot. Attempting to carry a hedgehog away from the spawn area is a waste of time and does not improve your odds, so just drop it on the spot.
If your bow aim is sharp, you can also shoot the Golden Apple off the hedgehog's back without harming the animal itself. The apple knocks loose and the hedgehog wanders away unharmed. This is purely optional and does not affect the drop, so most players default to shooting the hedgehog directly.
Picking Up the Apple (Mask Required)
Once the Golden Apple is on the ground, picking it up counts as theft. The prompt only appears while you are wearing a Mask, so make sure a mask is equipped before you engage the hedgehog. Without one, the steal prompt does not appear and the apple cannot be collected.
After stealing the apple, immediately sprint out of the red circle on your minimap. The red circle marks the area where the theft can still generate a bounty. As long as you exit the circle quickly, there are no consequences, even if nearby NPCs saw you steal it. Do not waste time fighting guards or trying to lose line of sight. Just get outside the red ring and the theft resolves cleanly with no wanted level and no silver penalty.
Value and Profit
Each Golden Apple sells directly to vendors for roughly 100 silver. The more profitable option is to craft it into a Gold Bar at any Witch using the alchemy recipe: 1 Golden Apple plus 3 Gold Ore produces 1 Gold Bar. Gold Bars sell for 500 silver at the bank, so a single Golden Apple effectively multiplies into roughly five times its raw sale value once crafted (assuming you already have Gold Ore stockpiled).
Gold Ore itself is easy to accumulate. The Anvil Hill Cave near Demeniss contains dense clusters of gold nodes inside a hidden chamber. Look for the suspicious wall at the bottom of a small depression, break it with a Force Punch, and mine every full-gold node (not the half-stone, half-gold variants) inside. Other productive gold spots include Silver Wolf Cave in Pailune, Mist Veil Forest Cave on the island south of Demeniss, the Crimson Desert cave near the giant city gate, the desert lake cave north of the Crimson Desert, and the San Pete Gold Mine northeast of Demeniss. A leveled mining knuckle drill combined with gathering-boost Abyss Gears will pull enough ore from one cave run to keep the Gold Bar recipe fed for hours.
Expected Yield
Testing at Gray Rock Dock during the 4 to 7 PM window produced roughly 7 Golden Apples in 10 minutes of active farming. This puts the method on par with or slightly ahead of the classic pickpocket Gold Bar farm, because there is no fast travel loop involved and the respawn trick keeps you stationary. Do remember that Gold Bars are worth the full 500 silver only when exchanged at a bank, so take your crafted bars there rather than selling to general vendors.
One caution: some players have reported Gold Bars disappearing from bank deposits and the bank balance appearing to cap out. Be careful when investing large stacks of Gold Bars in the bank until this behavior is confirmed fixed, as you could lose silver if the deposit glitches.

Grey Rock Dock Village Method
An efficient farming method exists at the Grey Rock Dock village. After liberating the area from hostile forces, head to the house at the start of the village. Critters including rats, raccoons, and golden hedgehogs with Golden Apples on their backs will literally spawn from the vegetation and steps below the house without needing to reset the area or travel to a respawn loop.
To maximize spawns, move out of the hedgehog's line of sight briefly by walking down the street from the house (not too far, just enough to break visual contact), then return slowly to check if anything has appeared. More often than not, a hedgehog will eventually show up. Going up the street and returning also triggers spawns from the previous point. The key is patience and short movements rather than long reset runs.
Collection Methods
There are several ways to collect a Golden Apple from a hedgehog at this location:
Bow and arrow: shoot the hedgehog or knock the apple off its back from a distance.
Steal from back: approach carefully and use the steal prompt while wearing a Mask.
Shoot to drop: a well-placed shot makes the hedgehog drop the apple, which can then be picked up.
Expected Returns
In testing, roughly 2 in-game hours of farming at Grey Rock Dock (for example, 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM) produced 8 to 9 Golden Apples. Since each apple can be refined with 3 Gold Ore into 1 Gold Bar at any Witch NPC, this method can accumulate the equivalent of 30 or more Gold Bars over a few in-game days. The spawns work consistently across multiple in-game days, making Grey Rock Dock one of the most reliable Golden Apple farming spots available. Combined with the Gray Rock Dock road spawn method described above, players have two complementary strategies for stacking Golden Apples efficiently.
Alternate Location: Tinkerton Golden Field
A second high-value hedgehog spawn exists near Tinkerton, between Deinis and Hernand. On the map, find the S in the word Deinis. Tinkerton sits just above it, and three fields spread out above Tinkerton. The middle field is the Golden Field, and the bottom-right corner of that middle field is the actual farming spot. A slanted water tank at the corner is the landmark.
Spawn Cluster
At the corner is a cluster of three bushes that can spawn up to 20 animals at once: hedgehogs, frogs, porcupines, raccoons, chickens, turkeys, spiders, and centipedes. The more hedgehogs that appear in a single spawn, the higher the chance one rolls as the Golden Apple Hedgehog variant. Middle of the day tends to produce the most hedgehogs in the mix, though the variant also spawns at night.
Reset Trick
After killing the Golden Apple Hedgehog and picking up its dropped apple, simply sprint about 10 feet away from the bushes, then turn and run back. Every animal in the cluster respawns instantly, giving another chance at the golden variant. This works as often as you can run the circle.
Witnesses and Mask
An NPC farmer works the Golden Field, and other villagers pass through. Picking up the dropped apple is flagged as theft (red ring warning), so a Mask is required to protect your reputation. Any back-alley vendor sells one; the closest is the back-alley vendor in Hernand. Bandits in the area sometimes drop masks on defeat. Approach resets from the direction that funnels fleeing animals away from where NPCs stand so the theft happens out of sight.
Chapter Access
The Tinkerton Golden Field is reliably reachable around Chapter 10. Some players have reached it earlier depending on which regions they have liberated, but availability before Chapter 10 is not guaranteed.
Snake Tail War Farming Method
A third farming location for Golden Apples is at Snake Tail War, located right next to Tinkertown. Unlike the Gray Rock Dock and Tinkerton Golden Field locations, this spot uses a different collection technique and is entirely within a friendly zone.
Focus Light Technique
Instead of shooting hedgehogs with a bow, this method uses the Focus Light ability. Sweep the Focus Light over hedgehogs in the area. When the beam passes over a hedgehog carrying a Golden Apple, the apple drops to the ground without needing to kill the animal. This makes the collection faster since you can scan multiple hedgehogs rapidly as you run through the area.
Fist Mask Requirement
You need to equip a Fist Mask to pick up the dropped apples, since collecting them is still classified as theft. The Fist Mask works the same way as any other mask for hiding your identity during the pickup animation.
Circuit and Reset
The farming route is a simple circuit. Enter from the pathway near Tinkertown and run through the Snake Tail War area, using Focus Light on every hedgehog along the way. After completing the loop, run back out to the starting pathway and jump over the fence line. The animals will slowly regenerate, and you can begin a new lap. If the spawns thin out after several loops, fast travel out of the area and return to force a full reset of the animal population.
Gold Bar Conversion
Golden Apples from Snake Tail War can be converted to Gold Bars using the same recipe: 1 Golden Apple + 3 Gold Ore at any Witch NPC. The Gold Bar recipe is found inside the Witches Hideout in Pell Luin; look on the bookshelf behind the desk after entering and taking a right. Each raw Golden Apple sells for approximately 114 silver at vendors, but crafting it into a Gold Bar and selling at the Bank for 500 silver produces a much higher return.

Trust Reward From the Unnamed Witch
One of the most reliable sources of a Golden Apple is a single unnamed witch NPC hidden in the world whose max-trust gift is the apple itself. The witch is not part of the main Witches of Pywel questline and does not belong to any recognised profession class, so her likes only include the global human race defaults: coin pouches of all types for +5 each. She does not accept the usual profession gift lines (no books, no flowers, no hides), which makes her a pure coin-pouch grind to 100 trust.
The obvious optimisation is to stack a Rabbit Leather Mask (+2 per action) and any abyss gear with a trust-gain affix before farming her, because the +5 per coin pouch is the smallest per-gift bump in the game and the mask turns it into +7 per gift. Completing her side quest (if one exists) is worth the usual +50 trust on top, which cuts the cap grind roughly in half.
Why This Source Is Worth Knowing
Golden Apples are one of the rarer items in Pywel, and outside of this NPC the drops are tied to difficult encounter tables and late-game quest rewards. The unnamed witch is effectively a guaranteed Golden Apple once you put in the grind, which makes her the most reliable source for anyone who specifically needs the item for cooking, quest progression, or the NPC Trust System completionist run. Plan the visit after you already have the Rabbit Leather Mask.
Three Best Farming Spots Ranked
Community testing across multiple in-game days has narrowed the golden apple hedgehog farming circuit down to three consistent spots. They are listed from best to worst by raw spawn density, though all three produce a steady flow of Golden Apples when weather conditions are clear. Pearl Abyss tends to patch overfarmed spots, so rotating through all three keeps your supply stable if one ever quiets down.
Spot 1: North of Pailune (Best Overall)
This is the single best farming spot currently known. Travel north of Pailune, follow the river upward, and pass the Spire of Solitude. Just past the spire you will reach the Tshira Tree landmark. A short way down from the tree, right beside the road, is a dense bush patch that draws hedgehogs in huge numbers.
Walking or running straight across the bush patch from one side to the other causes a small herd of rodents to flush out, and multiple golden apple hedgehogs are almost always in the mix. DP Gen clocked roughly three golden apple hedgehogs per 30-second walkthrough here at peak weather, which easily outpaces both of the other two spots below.
Spot 2: Trentin Fields (Near Serendian Watchtower)
The second spot sits near Trentin, just above the S in the Layla region on the map. The area contains three adjacent fields, and the Serendian Watchtower is the dead giveaway landmark. Head for the middle field and position yourself in its bottom corner.
The rodents are triggered by walking through a cluster of flax or flex bushes along the field edge. You will see mixed critters pop out, including hedgehogs, raccoons, salamanders, and weasels. Try to send the hedgehogs running back across the field rather than toward the nearby NPC farmers, because crossing their line of sight with a stolen Golden Apple in hand applies a contribution penalty. Jumping over the far fence before making each run keeps their spawn direction favorable.
Spot 3: Grey Rock Dock Pumpkin Patch
The third spot is just off Diesel's left shoulder on the map, at Grey Rock Dock. Follow the water up from that coast and you will also find a nearby choir location that must be liberated on a first visit. The farming target is the small pumpkin patch under the V shape formed by the road near a single house.
Hedgehogs spawn along the pumpkin patch edge, including ones that appear to pop out of the water line and along the back wall. Walk the corner, pick up any dropped apples, then step slightly away from the patch and walk back to trigger the respawn. The reset distance is short, roughly to the opposite side of the pumpkin patch. The tradeoff is that several NPCs live nearby, so grabbing the apple and immediately leaving the area is safer than lingering. This spot is the least productive of the three but still solid if the first two are quiet or occupied.
Weather Dependency
Golden apple hedgehog spawns are weather dependent. Clear, sunny weather is required for them to appear in any meaningful number. When rain rolls in, the hedgehogs vanish almost entirely from every known farm spot and are replaced by ordinary wildlife like raccoons, frogs, and leaves rustling in the bushes.
The fix is the Radiant Necklace, which forces clear sunshine. Players have reported hedgehogs reappearing the instant the weather flips back to sunny, sometimes within a single in-game moment. Always equip the Radiant Necklace before starting a farming session and swap the weather on arrival if rain is active.
Beyond weather, in-game time also matters. Multiple community guides report that the 4 AM to 11 AM window inside the game clock produces the densest hedgehog spawns, though the pattern is not as absolute as the weather rule.
Recommended Gear for Farming
Running a clean farm circuit calls for three specific items, all of which have their own wiki pages:
Mask: Required to pick up Golden Apples without taking a contribution hit, since the pickup is flagged as theft. Available from any Back Alley Shop vendor or as a drop from bandit bodies.
Radiant Necklace: Forces clear sunshine so hedgehogs keep spawning. Covered in detail on the Radiant Necklace page.
Infinite Arrow Build: A Rampaging Infinite Arrows setup pairs two specific gear pieces with a single bow, and combined with Poison Arrow ammo it knocks the apple off the hedgehog without needing a direct hit, so fast-moving targets rarely escape.
Apple to Gold Bar Conversion
A raw Golden Apple fetches a respectable sum from a merchant, but converting it into a Gold Bar multiplies the value. The recipe is 1 Golden Apple plus 3 Gold Ore, crafted at any witch vendor once the recipe has been learned. A finished Gold Bar can be exchanged at a bank for 500 silver, invested for passive income, or gifted to an NPC merchant for an instant plus-100 trust gain. Farm the apples, bank the bars.
