Overview
Timber and Fine Timber are crafting materials in Crimson Desert used at the Blacksmith for refinement. They are the primary resources for upgrading wooden shields. Both materials drop from the same trees, so any tree you fell will yield a mix of Timber and Fine Timber.

How to Obtain a Logging Axe
Before you can chop trees, you need a Logging Axe. There are two ways to get one:
Purchase from the Provisioner's Shop in Hernand. The shop is located in the central market area and stocks the axe for a small amount of silver.
Receive one for free from Turnali, the blacksmith in Hernand, as part of his introductory request quest.
Logging Step by Step
Once you have a Logging Axe, the process is the same everywhere in Pywel:
Approach any tree in the open world and open the tool wheel to equip the Logging Axe.
Begin chopping by pressing L1+R1 (PlayStation) or LB+RB (Xbox). Kliff will swing the axe into the trunk repeatedly.
Wait for the tree to fall. Larger trees take more chops than smaller ones.
Break the fallen trunk: continue hitting the downed log to split it into collectible pieces.
Collect the drops. Each tree yields both Timber and Fine Timber. The exact quantity varies, but you should expect 3 to 6 Timber and 1 to 3 Fine Timber per tree.
Turning Slash Alternative
The Turning Slash ability (unlocked in the skill tree) can fell trees without a Logging Axe. This is useful when you stumble upon harvestable trees while exploring and do not have the axe equipped. At Turning Slash Level 3, the skill can also break through enemy armor, making it a strong dual-purpose investment.
Turnali's Request (Tutorial Quest)

The first time you interact with logging is through Turnali's Request, a short tutorial quest available early in the game. Here is the walkthrough:
Speak to Turnali at the Hernand Blacksmith. He asks you to bring him 3 Fine Timber so he can resume his work.
Turnali gives you a free Logging Axe.
Head east of Hernand to the island between the two rivers. The quest marks the area on your map.
Chop down two or three trees on the island. Each tree drops a mix of Timber and Fine Timber, so 2-3 trees should provide the 3 Fine Timber you need.
Return to Turnali and hand over the Fine Timber.
Turnali rewards you with a Bekker Shield, a Turnali's Smithy Flyer (key item), and 10 Timber.
Read the Smithy Flyer in your key item inventory, then talk to Turnali again and select "Refine Equipment" to upgrade the Bekker Shield using the 10 Timber. This completes the tutorial.
Region-by-Region Tree Locations
Trees suitable for logging appear throughout Pywel. Unlike ore and crystal deposits, which cluster in specific geological formations, trees grow in forests, along roads, near rivers, and around settlements. Any region's trees can be chopped for both Timber and Fine Timber. The table below highlights the best spots in each area.
Region | Tree Density | |
|---|---|---|
High | River island east of town (quest location). Forests lining the north and south banks of the Nas River. Close to the Provisioner's Shop, making resupply convenient. | |
High | Dense woodland patches between the hills. Good early-game farming area since it connects directly to Hernand. | |
Moderate | Scattered woodland areas between settlements. Trees line the main road between Demeniss Town and the surrounding farms. | |
Moderate | Wooded areas near the capital city and along the road leading south. Mixed deciduous forest clusters on the outskirts. | |
Moderate to High | Mountain forests and the areas surrounding Greymane Camp provide a steady supply. Dense conifer groves in the northern highlands. | |
Low | Arid terrain with fewer trees. Focus on oases and river banks for sparse clusters. Not recommended for dedicated farming. |
Tree Respawn Mechanics
Felled trees respawn after approximately one in-game day (roughly 48 real-time minutes). Respawn timers begin as soon as you collect the last piece of dropped material. This means you can revisit the same forest repeatedly. The most efficient farming loop is the Hernand river island: chop all trees, fast travel to a distant location for other tasks, then return after one in-game day cycle.
Uses and Refinement
Timber, Fine Timber, and Flawless Timber are used at the Blacksmith for refinement (equipment upgrades). Each tier of timber upgrades a corresponding tier of wooden shield:

Material | Refinement Use | How to Obtain | |
|---|---|---|---|
Low-tier upgrades (Refinement Levels 1-3) | Wooden Shields | Fell any tree | |
Mid-tier upgrades (Refinement Levels 4-6) | Wooden Shields | Fell any tree (less common drop) | |
High-tier upgrades (Refinement Levels 7-10) | Wooden Shields |
Flawless Timber is a rare drop that only comes from particularly large or ancient-looking trees. If you need Flawless Timber specifically, focus on the old-growth forests in northern Pailune and the outskirts of Delesyia, where the tallest trees grow.
Tips
Always carry a Logging Axe when exploring. Alternatively, invest in Turning Slash so you can fell trees on the go.
The Hernand river island is the most convenient early-game logging spot because of its proximity to the blacksmith and provisioner.
Trees along roads are easy to spot and reach. Look for the subtle "chop" prompt that appears when you approach a harvestable tree.
Stock up on Timber before attempting shield refinements. A full upgrade chain from Level 1 to Level 10 requires a significant amount of all three timber types.
Logging also counts toward Life Challenges, so chopping trees contributes to challenge completions and Sealed Abyss Artifact rewards.
