Smugglers and Black Markets
Smugglers are underground vendors scattered across Pywel in Crimson Desert who sell rare ammunition, medicines, and crafting materials outside normal trade channels. This guide covers all 16 known smuggler locations, their inventories, and how to use them.

Overview
Smugglers are a distinct category of underground vendors found throughout the continent of Pywel in Crimson Desert. Unlike Back Alley Shops, which focus on criminal tools and fencing stolen goods, smugglers specialize in selling hard-to-find consumables and crafting materials: specialty ammunition, medicinal herbs, explosives, and rare reagents that regular merchants either do not stock or carry only in very limited quantities.
Smugglers operate quietly, often tucked into corners of settlements or hidden at rural outposts. Sixteen confirmed smuggler vendors are spread across the world, from the lowlands around Hernand to the cold northern reaches near Varnia. Each location carries a base set of common ammunition alongside unique items that vary by region.
Smugglers are separate from the broader Black Market system, which handles stolen goods and unpackaged trade items at Goldleaf Trading Posts. While both operate outside legitimate commerce, smugglers sell to you rather than buying from you, making them a supply resource rather than a fencing outlet.
Common Inventory

Most smuggler vendors carry the same base selection of ammunition regardless of location. These items restock every in-game midnight along with all other vendor inventories.
Item | Price | Stock | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
varies | 2 | Standard arrow; widely stocked across all smuggler locations | |
varies | 3 | Standard firearm round; stocked at nearly every smuggler | |
varies | 15 | Mortar and cannon ammunition; higher quantity than arrows or bullets | |
300 | varies | Available at most smuggler locations; high-damage specialty ammunition |
In addition to the base ammunition, many smugglers carry Palmar Leaf (sold at 400 per unit), Ginseng (150 per unit), and a rotating selection of healing potions and medicines. Regional smugglers often supplement these with unique items specific to their area.

Notable Locations in Detail
Southern Hernand Goldleaves' Black Market (Magstel)
The largest smuggler operation in Pywel is run by Magstel, the merchant at the Southern Hernand Goldleaves' Black Market. With 16 unique items in stock, Magstel carries the widest selection of any smuggler vendor in the game. This includes rare combat supplies not available at other smuggler locations. The Goldleaves' Black Market is distinct from the standard Back Alley Shop and from the Goldleaf Trading Post fence used for unpackaged trade goods. Magstel specifically sells to the player rather than buying from them.
The Southern Hernand location is accessible relatively early, making Magstel a useful resource for players who want a broad selection of consumables without having to travel across the map. Stock rotates at midnight like all vendors, so visiting daily ensures access to the rarest items.
Demeniss Smuggler
The smuggler in Demeniss sits just to the east of the castle wall and is one of the most convenient locations for obtaining Explosive Arrows. Explosive Arrows are a high-damage ammunition type not sold by standard equipment merchants, making this vendor particularly valuable for players using a ranged build. The Demeniss smuggler also carries Palmar Leaf at 400 per unit, which feeds into Palmar Pill alchemy recipes and the Infinite Arrows research chain.
Pailune Smuggler
The Pailune smuggler is positioned near Jian's grave in the Pailune region, close to one of the natural Palmar Leaf fields. This proximity makes it a convenient combination stop: gather Palmar Leaf from the field and top up from the vendor in the same visit. Like other regional smugglers, this vendor restocks the base ammunition set alongside the Palmar Leaf stock.
St. Halssius's House of Healing Smuggler
The smuggler at St. Halssius's House of Healing operates near the apothecary building east of Hernand. This location is notable for its focus on medicinal stock, fitting the healing theme of the area. It carries Palmar Leaf (400), standard ammunition, and a variety of healing consumables. The proximity to the Back Alley Shop in the same district makes this part of the eastern Hernand outskirts a dense cluster of underground vendor activity.
Saddlewind Ranch Smuggler
The smuggler at Saddlewind Ranch sits north of Hernand Town. The ranch is also home to the buyer for stolen horses, making the area a useful stop for players engaged in livestock poaching as part of the Black Market system. Grabbing ammunition from the ranch smuggler before or after a horse-selling run is a practical way to combine both activities in one trip.
Saltroad Camp Smuggler
The Saltroad Camp smuggler sits along the trade corridor that connects the major settlements of Pywel. Travelers using wagons to haul Trade Goods along this route can resupply at the Saltroad Camp vendor without detouring into a city. The camp carries Ginseng at 150 per unit, a cost-effective source of the crafting herb compared to picking it wild.
Key Consumables: Palmar Leaf and Ginseng
Two herbs appear frequently across the smuggler network and are worth buying in bulk when available.
Item | Smuggler Price | Primary Use | Found At |
|---|---|---|---|
400 | Crafting Palmar Pills (Spirit recovery); Infinite Arrows research | Calphade, Delesyia, Demeniss, Muiquun, Pailune, St. Halssius, and others | |
150 | Crafting stamina and recovery consumables; alchemy recipes | Calphade, Hovels, Saltroad Camp, and others |
Palmar Leaf is one of the most versatile herbs in the game. Beyond its role in Palmar Pills (which restore Spirit), it feeds into the Infinite Arrows research system. Purchasing Palmar Leaf from smugglers is often faster than gathering it in the wild, especially when running alchemy in bulk.
Ammunition Availability
Smugglers are one of the primary merchant sources for specialty ammunition. While standard Arrows and Bullets are also sold by general equipment merchants, Explosive Arrows and high-volume Small Cannonballs are harder to source outside the smuggler network. Players using a heavy combat or siege build should make regular smuggler runs a priority.
Availability | Stock per Restock | |
|---|---|---|
Most smuggler locations | 2 | |
Most smuggler locations | 3 | |
Most smuggler locations | 15 | |
300 (price); limited stock |
Because each smuggler restocks independently at midnight, visiting multiple locations on a circuit allows you to accumulate more ammunition than any single vendor can supply in one cycle. Planning a regular route through several smuggler stops is advisable for players who burn through specialty ammo quickly.
Smugglers vs. Other Underground Vendors
The underground economy in Crimson Desert has several distinct vendor types. Smugglers fill a specific niche that the other types do not cover.
Vendor Type | Primary Function | Sells or Buys? | |
|---|---|---|---|
Criminal tools and fence for stolen goods | Both | Masks, keys, disguises; accepts stolen valuables | |
Specialty consumables and rare crafting materials | Sells to player | ||
Fence for unpackaged trade goods | Buys from player | Accepts unpackaged trade goods; pays personal currency | |
Fence for stolen animals | Buys from player | Accepts poached animals; pays personal currency | |
Fence for stolen carts and wagons | Buys from player | Accepts stolen wagons; pays personal currency |
Tips
The midnight restock applies to all vendors simultaneously. Set up a fast-travel route between two or three conveniently located smugglers and circuit them each in-game day for maximum ammunition stockpiling.
Magstel's Southern Hernand Goldleaves' Black Market has the largest variety, but for pure Explosive Arrow acquisition the Demeniss smuggler is the most practical early-to-mid-game stop.
Palmar Leaf at 400 per unit is worth buying whenever available. The herb is consumed in bulk if you are crafting Palmar Pills or investing in the Infinite Arrows research tree.
Ginseng at 150 per unit from smugglers is usually cheaper than the price at general apothecary vendors. Stock up at Hovels, Saltroad Camp, or Calphade to save currency over time.
Smugglers pay in personal copper and silver, the same currencies used at Back Alley Shops. Camp funds are not required, so you can shop here regardless of your camp economy state.
If stock is empty at a nearby smuggler, check a neighboring settlement. Each vendor maintains an independent inventory and restock timer, so a depleted Hernand vendor does not mean all regional smugglers are empty.
The Saddlewind Ranch smuggler and the livestock fence are in the same area north of Hernand. Combining a livestock sale with an ammunition purchase makes the trip more efficient.
