Overview
The Greymane Camp on Howling Hill is the player's home base, but it does not come with a working fast travel point by default. A broken Abyss Nexus sits just outside Kliff's house, missing its central teleportation stone. To activate it, you need to recover the missing Abyss Transporter disk from an underground chamber beneath Karin Quarry, bring it back to camp, and install it on the stone platform. Once complete, you can teleport to your camp from anywhere on the map.
This process is entirely optional and easy to miss. The game does not point you toward it with a quest marker, so many players finish the story without ever unlocking the camp teleport. Doing it early saves a huge amount of travel time, since the Greymane Camp is centrally located in Hernand and serves as the hub for crafting, cooking, and camp management.
Prerequisites
You cannot attempt this until you have progressed far enough in the main story to acquire two specific tools. Both are obtained during Chapter 4.
Requirement | How to Obtain |
|---|---|
Learned during the Scholastone quest in Chapter 4. Follow the road to Scholastone (do not cut cross-country) and watch for an Axiom spirit that demonstrates the technique. If you miss the spirit on the road, you will not have a second chance until Chapter 9. | |
Given to you after repairing the Kilnden Workshop during the Kiln Repair at the Kilnden Workshop quest. The dwarves hand it over once the furnace is back in working order. | |
Part of the Estate in Dismay arc for House Roberts. Requires clearing Karin Quarry of Bleed Bandits and defeating the Excavatron boss. Completing this quest opens the underground passage you need. |
All three prerequisites tie into the Chapter 4 storyline, so you should have them by the time you reach Chapter 5. If you have already passed that point, you can go back and complete the Sealed in Stone side quest at any time.
Step 1: Find the Broken Teleport Pad
Head to Howling Hill and look near the entrance to Kliff's house. Between two trees to the left of the front door, a stone plate is hidden under a patch of thorny vines and pink flowers. This plate is the base of the Abyss Nexus, but it is missing its central disk.
If you use the Blinding Flash ability here (hold L1 + R1 on PlayStation, LB + RB on Xbox, or Ctrl + Left Click on keyboard), you will see a faint energy trail pointing toward the platform. A large question mark icon may also appear on your map near this spot.
Step 2: Clear the Vines Covering the Platform
The stone plate is blocked by thorny bracken that must be burned away before you can use it. There are two ways to do this:
Blinding Flash into Concentrating Light: Cast Blinding Flash and then immediately follow it with Concentrating Light to focus a beam of concentrated energy onto the vines. This scorching ray burns the bracken away like a magnifying glass.
Fire arrows: If you have fire arrows available, you can simply shoot the vines to ignite them. Both methods produce the same result.
Once the vines are gone, the circular stone platform is fully visible. It has an empty indent in the center where the Abyss Transporter disk needs to be placed.
Step 3: Recover the Abyss Transporter From Karin Quarry
The missing teleportation disk is hidden underground in Karin Quarry, located south of Hook Rapids and northeast of the Greymane Camp. You must have completed the Sealed in Stone side quest to access the underground passage.
Getting Underground
Travel to Karin Quarry and find the large crane at the center of the quarry.
Look beneath the crane for a hole in the ground. This is the same opening that was exposed earlier when you used the crane to extract a relic during the Sealed in Stone quest.
Drop down through the hole into the underground cavern below.
Navigating the Cavern
Follow the tunnel forward. You will pass through crystalline caverns until you reach a large chamber.
Collect the three Palmar Pills sitting on a stone dais in the chamber. These are useful healing items.
Two Sentry Constructs guard the area. Destroy them to collect Power Cores. These enemies are aggressive but manageable at this point in the story.
On the left side of the chamber, you will see a purple crystallized wall with a faint glow. This is the barrier you need to break.
Breaking the Crystal Wall
Stand a short distance from the crystal wall and use Force Palm: Focus. On PlayStation, press L3 + R3, then hold R3 to charge. On Xbox, press LS + RS and hold RS. On keyboard, hold the assigned Force Palm key. Keep holding until you see a golden orb form in Kliff's palm (this takes about three seconds), then release to fire a focused blast that shatters the crystal barrier.
Be aware of stone formations in the area. If a laser beam trap is present, position yourself behind cover to avoid damage while charging the ability.
Collecting the Disk
Behind the destroyed wall, you will find the Abyss Transporter: a floating stone disk hovering in the air. Approach it and use Axiom Force (your tether/grapple ability) to latch onto it. Once tethered, select "Seal" to store the disk inside your Kuku Iron Pot for safe transport back to camp.
Step 4: Install the Abyss Transporter
Return to the stone platform near Kliff's house on Howling Hill. If you have not already burned away the vines (Step 2), do that first.
Open your inventory and select the Kuku Iron Pot.
Choose the Abyss Transporter from the pot's contents and press the Discard button. The disk will float out of the pot and hover in mid-air in front of you.
Use Axiom Force (your tether) to grab the floating disk and carefully guide it over the circular indent in the stone platform. Position it so it sits flat on top of the plate.
Step onto the platform, jump, and use Force Palm mid-air to slam downward onto the disk. This force-fits the Abyss Transporter into the platform and locks it in place.
A brief activation animation plays, and the Abyss Nexus icon appears on your map. The fast travel point is now permanently active.
Using the Camp Teleport
Once the Abyss Nexus is activated, you can fast travel to it from anywhere on the map. Open your world map, make sure the "All" or "Environment" filter tab is selected so fast travel icons are visible, hover over the Howling Hill icon, and press Triangle (PlayStation), Y (Xbox), or double-click (keyboard) to teleport instantly.
Keep in mind that you cannot fast travel while mounted. Dismount your horse before attempting to teleport.
Why This Matters
Unlocking the camp teleport is one of the most impactful quality-of-life upgrades in the game. The Greymane Camp houses the blacksmith, alchemy lab, cooking area, farm, ranch, dyehouse, barber shop, and trading center. Without the teleport, every trip back to camp for crafting, cooking, or equipment upgrades requires a long horseback ride. With it, you can return to camp in seconds from any region of Pywel.
Crafting runs: Teleport home to forge weapons, brew potions, or cook meals between quests.
Restocking: Quickly visit the trading center or food shop to resupply before heading back out.
Appearance changes: Access the barber shop and dyehouse on demand instead of planning dedicated trips.
Farm and ranch management: Check on crops and animals frequently without wasting travel time.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
Cannot enter the quarry hole | You need to complete the Sealed in Stone side quest first. Accept it from Leon Roberts in Hernand. |
Crystal wall does not break | Make sure you are using Force Palm: Focus (the charged version), not the regular Force Palm. Hold the button until a golden orb appears before releasing. |
Cannot find the Blinding Flash ability | Blinding Flash is unlocked automatically through the main story. Hold L1 + R1 (PS), LB + RB (Xbox), or Ctrl + Left Click (PC) to activate it. |
The Discard option is missing from the Kuku Pot | Some versions of the game label the button "Withdraw" instead of "Discard". Look for either option when viewing the Abyss Transporter inside the pot. |
The disk will not lock into the platform | Position the disk flat on the indent using Axiom Force first, then stand on the platform, jump, and use Force Palm mid-air. The aerial slam is required; a grounded Force Palm will not work. |
Tips
You can do this as soon as you finish Chapter 4 and complete the Sealed in Stone side quest. The earlier you unlock it, the more time you save over the course of the game.
If you missed the Force Palm: Focus ability during the Scholastone road in Chapter 4, you will need to wait until Chapter 9 to learn it. Plan accordingly.
The Greymane Camp Abyss Nexus is one of 46 Abyss Nexus points spread across Pywel. Checking question-mark icons on the map with Blinding Flash is a good habit for finding the rest.
This is unrelated to the Abyss Nexus Cresset puzzle (the dragon stone chamber south of Howling Hill). That is a separate challenge with different requirements.
