Wind Element
November 2, 2026 at 06:41 AM
Correct Wind imbuement access and research currency, with documented puzzle and Wind Slash details.
Wind is one of the four elements in Crimson Desert's elemental combat system. It can be selected for Imbue Element after its unlock, using the element-selection interface associated here with the Axiom Bracelet. Compatible actions can apply the selected element to weapons; Wind also has separate Abyss Cores, dedicated skills and research equipment. Do not confuse those individual gear effects with the full elemental unlock.
Wind's signature combat effect is knockback and displacement. Where Fire burns over time, Ice freezes enemies in place, and Lightning stuns and paralyzes, Wind sends enemies flying on impact. This makes it a crowd control element focused on repositioning rather than applying a lingering status effect. Wind attacks can scatter melee swarms, interrupt enemy formations, and launch targets into the air for follow-up combos.
Wind also has a strong connection to traversal. Several of the game's aerial movement abilities, including Gliding and Flight, are thematically tied to wind, and wind magic can launch Kliff into the air during combat for aerial dive kicks that send surrounding enemies flying.

Fire, Ice and Lightning have their own puzzle unlock locations across Pywel and the Abyss. Completing the relevant challenges unlocks the element's skills; an elemental unlock makes enhancement with skill resources available. Earlier instructions here describe spending Abyss Artifacts on Imbue Element in the Health tree. Compatible actions include weapon skills, Force Palm and ranged attacks at the appropriate skill levels, rather than a free permanent coating on every attack.
Wind's documented skill unlock is Storm Veil at Riddle Square, reached from the Spire of Clockwork. Once unlocked, Wind can be selected for Imbue Element alongside the other unlocked elements. The following are additional wind-related gear, skill and traversal examples; they are not a replacement for selecting the element.
Abyss Cores such as Wind Slash, which provide wind-based attacks when socketed into weapons.
Skill tree abilities like Focus Charging Wind, which channels wind energy into rapid archery attacks.
Research-crafted equipment like the Propeller Spear, Gale Shield, and Air Blaster, all unlocked through the Wind Energy Fusion Device Research project.
Traversal skills including Flight, Swift Flight, and wind-assisted aerial maneuvers that let Kliff gain altitude mid-combat.
A Wind setup can therefore combine the unlocked element and compatible imbued actions with specific gear or skills. Individual effects have their own triggers and requirements; obtaining one wind-themed weapon is not the same as completing the elemental puzzle unlock.
Storm Veil is Kliff's dedicated Wind skill. Unlock it by entering the Spire of Clockwork in Demeniss and completing Riddle Square in the Abyss. This is separate from the individual wind-based equipment examples below.
To enter the Spire of Clockwork, complete Chapter 8: Blood Coronation and defeat Lucian Bastier as Damiane to receive the Spire of Clockwork Key. The documented boss name is Lucian Bastier; use that key to unlock the spire door.
Inside the Spire, pull levers to activate gear systems, climb using Axiom Force, navigate rotating cogs, and ride the elevator to the top where an Abyss Gate spawns. Through the gate lies Riddle Square, a timed gliding time trial. Activate the turbine, fly through rings before the timer expires, navigate horizontal wind bursts and vertical ring stacks, and finish by using Force Palm on the wheel mechanism at the end. Completing the trial unlocks Wind Level 1 and grants Storm Veil.
Storm Veil functions as an on-demand smoke bomb. When activated, Kliff deploys a cloud of mist that causes enemies inside or behind it to lose track of him. This breaks aggro and allows for repositioning, setting up ambush attacks, or safely disengaging from dangerous encounters. It costs 10 Spirit to use and sits on the Health (Red) branch of the skill tree. While it is the least directly offensive of the four elemental skills, its stealth utility makes it valuable for both combat and exploration.
Wind Slash is the most recognizable wind-based ability in the game. It is a unique active Abyss Core that fires a blade of wind at high speed, piercing through every enemy in its path without stopping on contact. The projectile deals Abyss-type damage to each target it passes through, making it extremely effective when enemies are lined up in corridors or narrow terrain.
The Wind Slash record gives three input patterns: press Attack repeatedly, use dodge followed by Attack, or use Jump followed by Attack. Treat the older R1/RB-combo description as a control-preset example, not a universal button assignment. The record does not establish a guaranteed identical proc on every hit.
How to obtain: Wind Slash comes embedded in the reward for defeating Kailok, the Hornsplitter during The End of Greed in Chapter 2. That reward is the Sword of the Lord, received after the Goldleaf Guildhouse fight and cutscene. The equipment guide shows Attack 30, Attack Speed Lv.2 and refinement 10 with Wind Slash, Destruction I and Swift I installed. The earlier 13-Attack figure here has an unspecified display level and should not be treated as the same snapshot. Older notes also suggested Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges and rare drops from world bosses; those are not established as alternate Wind Slash acquisition routes by this equipment guide.
Transferring the core: Wind Slash is not permanently bound to the Sword of the Lord. After unlocking the ability to manage Abyss Cores through the Witch of Wisdom faction questline, players can extract Wind Slash from the Sword of the Lord and socket it into any other melee weapon. This lets players keep using Wind Slash on higher-tier weapons as they progress through the game.
Wind Slash is widely considered one of the best early Abyss Cores because it gives melee-focused builds a ranged damage option. Enemies that maintain distance, fly, or stay out of normal sword range can all be hit by the piercing wind projectile.
For the recorded Wind Slash crafting route, learn Gear Blueprint: Wind Slash and combine one Destruction I, one Haste I and one Swift I at a Witch. The same record names Grimrak as a seller reference. This is a separate acquisition reference from the Sword of the Lord reward, and does not establish an earliest possible route or a universal shop-unlock condition.
Focus Charging Wind is a bow skill that channels wind energy during Focus Shot to fire a rapid succession of powerful arrows. This skill sits in the archery branch of the skill tree and gives ranged builds a way to incorporate wind into their attack rotation.
When activated, Kliff gathers the power of the wind while holding a Focus Shot, then releases a burst of arrows in quick succession. The rapid volley deals significant damage in a short window, making it particularly useful against single targets or clustered groups that a normal Focus Shot would only hit once.
Focus Charging Wind pairs well with elemental arrow combinations. Players can imbue their arrows with Fire or Lightning through the Axiom Bracelet and then use Focus Charging Wind to deliver multiple elemental hits in rapid succession, stacking burn or stun effects much faster than standard archery.
The Research System includes wind-themed equipment research. Earlier notes label Wind Energy Fusion Device Research as 2A at Research Institutes in the Delesyia region and quote 7 Silver with a six-hour timer. Patch 1.18.00 changed the resource required for research from Silver to Camp Funds. The old price and timer are earlier account details, not a verified current fee or a numeric conversion to Camp Funds.
Completing this research unlocks the ability to craft three items:
Propeller Spear: A spear weapon that incorporates wind energy into its attacks. One of its special equipment challenges requires hitting 5 enemies at once with its wind attack.
Gale Shield: A shield that harnesses wind energy for defensive applications.
Air Blaster: A ranged tool that uses compressed wind to attack at a distance.
These three items represent some of the only dedicated wind-element equipment in the game. Because they require research completion before they can be crafted, players who want to build around Wind should prioritize unlocking the Wind Energy Fusion Device Research early.
Wind is closely tied to aerial movement in Crimson Desert. While the game does not explicitly label its traversal abilities as "wind element," the mechanics and visual effects strongly associate them with wind power.
Gliding (Crow's Wing): The Gliding ability, granted by White Crow the Witch after Kliff visits the Library of Providence, transforms his cloak into large, tattered raven wings. This allows controlled descent from any elevated position. Gliding draws from the shared stamina pool, so managing stamina before jumping from extreme heights is critical.
Flight: The Flight skill, located in the Health (Red) branch of the skill tree, lets all three playable characters deploy a glider while airborne. Flight is unlocked during the Chapter 1 quest "Traces" for Kliff, and is available by default for Damiane and Oongka.
Swift Flight: Upgrading Flight to Level 2 unlocks Swift Flight, which reduces air resistance and significantly increases glide speed. Swift Flight consumes more stamina per second than standard gliding, but it covers far greater distances in the same time. Investing in the Stamina skill (Blue tree, upgradeable to Level 16) extends aerial range considerably and makes Swift Flight much more practical for long traversals.
Aerial Roll: After learning Flight, players can spend 1 Abyss Artifact to unlock Aerial Roll, a high-speed dash performed while in flight. Aerial Roll instantly burns stamina for a burst of forward momentum, useful for crossing gaps that standard gliding cannot reach.
Wind-Assisted Altitude: During combat encounters, wind magic can launch Kliff into the air, granting quick altitude for aerial combos. Players can vault off enemies, transition from a glide into a dive kick, or use wind to gain height for aerial dive attacks that send surrounding enemies flying on impact.
Wind's primary combat identity is crowd control through displacement. Unlike Fire's damage-over-time, Ice's movement denial, or Lightning's stun lock, Wind physically relocates enemies by sending them flying backward or into the air. This has several practical uses:
Scattering melee swarms: When surrounded by multiple enemies, wind attacks break the formation by knocking targets in different directions. This creates breathing room without needing to dodge away from the group.
Ring-out potential: Near cliffs, ledges, or elevated terrain, wind knockback can push enemies off the edge entirely, removing them from the fight without needing to deplete their health bar.
Aerial combo setups: Launching an enemy into the air with a wind attack creates an opening for aerial follow-ups. Players can start a combo with Wind to launch, switch to Fire for a burning aerial chain, and finish with an Ice slam to freeze the target on landing.
Interrupting charges: Enemies that rush forward in straight lines are vulnerable to Wind Slash's piercing projectile, which can hit them mid-charge and send them stumbling.
Ranged coverage for melee builds: Wind Slash gives sword and melee weapon users a way to deal damage at range, hitting archers, flying enemies, and other targets that stay out of normal melee reach.
Wind does not apply a lingering status effect the way Fire, Ice, and Lightning do. There is no "wind debuff" that ticks down over time. The knockback itself is the entire effect, which means Wind's crowd control is immediate and positional rather than sustained.
Wind pairs effectively with other elements in sequence. Because Wind's knockback repositions enemies rather than locking them in place, it works best as either an opener or a finisher in elemental combo chains.
Wind into Fire: Launch enemies into the air with a wind attack, then switch to Fire for burning aerial strikes. The airborne enemies cannot dodge or block while falling, giving Fire's damage-over-time effect free application time.
Wind into Ice: After sending a target airborne with Wind, follow up with an Ice slam on landing to freeze them in place. The freeze locks the enemy down after the knockback ends, extending your total control window.
Lightning into Wind: Stun a group with Lightning first, then use a wind attack to scatter the stunned enemies. This is useful when you want to isolate a dangerous target from its allies.
Defeat Kailok, the Hornsplitter early to obtain the Sword of the Lord and its Wind Slash Abyss Core. This is your most accessible wind combat tool in the early game.
Transfer Wind Slash to a higher-tier weapon as soon as you unlock Abyss Core management through the Witch of Wisdom questline. The core's value only grows as your base weapon damage increases.
Pair Wind Slash with Destruction-type Abyss Cores to maximize the raw damage of each wind blade hit.
Position yourself so Wind Slash's piercing projectile can hit multiple enemies in a line. The blade does not stop on the first target, so lined-up enemies all take full damage.
Invest in stamina upgrades before relying heavily on Swift Flight. Without enough stamina, you will run out mid-glide and fall.
Use wind knockback near cliffs and ledges for environmental kills. Enemies launched off edges take fatal fall damage regardless of their remaining health.
Begin the Wind Energy Fusion Device Research dispatch mission as early as possible. The earlier research account quotes a 6-hour background timer; check the current project duration and Camp Funds requirement before planning when the Propeller Spear, Gale Shield, and Air Blaster will be available.
Remember that Wind does not apply a lingering debuff. If you need sustained crowd control rather than immediate displacement, Ice or Lightning may be more appropriate for that specific encounter.

Earlier community-testing accounts: On pure imbuement damage alone, community testing places Wind Element at the bottom of the elemental ladder. Creators who have parsed imbued hit damage against the same enemy with all four elements report that wind's per-hit damage is visibly below Lightning Element, and both trail Frost Element and Fire Element by a wide margin. If you ranked elements only on their imbue number, wind would sit in an F-tier slot of its own.
Earlier build opinions: What saves wind is utility. Its signature skill Storm Veil is widely regarded as one of the best crowd-control tools in the game. It functions like a magic smoke bomb, applying a blanket disable to trash groups, and is routinely called a hard-carry for Fort Liberation runs, arena-style mob fights, and the heavy add phases that some mid-game story beats force on the player. The catch is that Storm Veil works regardless of which element is currently imbued, so you do not need to keep wind selected to benefit from it.
That earlier ranking account gives the following view: The community verdict is a conditional C-tier: wind earns its rating almost entirely because unlocking the element unlocks Storm Veil and the traversal shortcut from Pillar of Wind. Once you have both, you can keep a stronger element equipped for damage and still cast Storm Veil when you need a panic button. This makes wind one of the clearest examples in the game of an element being worth unlocking but not worth keeping active.
Pillar of Wind: Pillar of Wind creates a wind pillar that both damages and throws out an updraft you can ride. For damage it is weak. For traversal it is genuinely useful, reaching cliff tops that would otherwise require Force Palm chains or the Hot Air Balloon.
Earlier gear commentary: Storm Veil as a skill: S-tier for trash clearing and fort missions, useless against bosses. Stays usable even when another element is imbued, which is precisely why wind is typically swapped off after the unlock is complete.
Earlier loadout advice: Wind stays on your bar mainly during traversal-heavy zones where you want Pillar of Wind's updraft every few seconds, and during early playthroughs before you have access to the stronger imbuements. Endgame builds almost always swap to Fire Element or Frost Element after confirming Storm Veil is unlocked.
Earlier chapter-route account: Wind is locked behind the most story progression of any element. You must finish Chapter 8: Blood Coronation, including the Traitor Clue arc and A Fleeting Dream, before the Spire becomes accessible. The chapter ends with a Damiane-only boss fight against Lucian Bastier at the same tower; on victory you receive the Spire of Clockwork Key alongside the official knight's plate armor and other Damiane gear. Slot the key into the front gate of the Spire of Clockwork and the unlock chain begins.
Inside the Spire, the path up has fewer puzzles than the other elements but more vertical traversal. Each step below corresponds to one mechanism you must engage before the next becomes reachable.
Step | Mechanism | Notes |
|---|---|---|
1 | Entry lever above the gate | Jump up and grapple onto the lever, then drop down on it. The lever swings and the tower starts powering up. |
2 | Cog wheel lever (mid-tower) | Aerial Force Palm jumps and grapple-pulls. Triple-jump, glide, hit the grapple, double-tap Square to pull yourself up onto the cog. Pull the lever the same way as the entry one. |
3 | Spinning ladder | A long climbable beam that looks decorative but is actually a ladder. Climb most of the way up, finishing with another aerial Force Palm if needed. |
4 | Rotating doorway | A wall section opens and closes as it spins. Time the dash through the gap; the gap stays open long enough for one sprint. |
5 | Top-floor lift | Three buttons: top sends the lift up, bottom sends it down, side calls it. Press the top button. The ride takes about a minute. |
6 | Center room of the upper terrace | Stand in the middle of the rotunda for a few seconds. The quest updates and an Abyss gate spawns in the side opening on the right. |
Hold Square on the gate to teleport up to the only abyss island in the Wind chain. Unlike Lightning, Frost or Fire, Wind requires only one island.
The earlier route notes below describe Riddle Square as a timed gliding trial. The documented solution starts by using Axiom Force on the circular switch to activate the vents, then flying through the rings toward the generator. Passing through a ring automatically restores Stamina. The specific movement rhythm below is an earlier route account rather than the only possible solution.
Fly straight up and loop around the entry turbine to chain through the first cluster of rings.
Drop onto the horizontal fan partway through. The fan's elevation can drop you below the next ring if you over-glide; cancel the glide just before the fan to stay on the optimal line.
Glide off the horizontal fan into the vertical fan, which launches you up into the densest cluster of stacked rings. Hitting these from above is harder than hitting them from the side; level out before passing through.
After the upper cluster, glide and let the trailing fan push you onto the finish button.
Tap glide one more time before landing on the artifact platform; without it you can take fall damage and waste a healing item before the unlock cutscene begins.
Activate the circular generator at its center with Force Palm or Force Current, then collect the Abyss Artifact on the lower platform. Completing Riddle Square unlocks Wind and Kliff's Storm Veil; the Imbue Element guide also lists the corresponding Storm Pillar for Damiane and Storm Howl for Oongka. Wind can be selected for compatible imbued actions after the elemental unlock. The earlier traversal notes connect Pillar of Wind's updraft to its own equipped gear effect, rather than the puzzle reward alone.
Earlier combat notes: Storm Veil's practical role is escape rather than damage. Triggering it deploys a cloud of mist that breaks aggro on enemies inside or behind it; surrounded mobs lose their lock on Kliff for several seconds, which is enough time to back off, switch off-element, or set up an opening attack from a flank. It costs 10 Spirit and remains usable even when another element is selected on the bracelet, which is why most builds unlock Wind for the skill and then keep Fire Element or Frost Element equipped for damage.
