Overview
Riddle Square is a floating Abyss island in Crimson Desert, accessed through the Spire of Clockwork at Breezeblown Knoll in the Demeniss region. Despite its name suggesting a riddle or logic challenge, Riddle Square is a timed gliding time trial that tests aerial movement skills rather than puzzle-solving ability. Completing it unlocks Wind Level 1 and grants the Storm Veil skill, the fourth and final elemental ability in the game.
Riddle Square is the only Abyss island connected to the Spire of Clockwork. Unlike the Spire of the Stars, which chains into five sequential puzzle islands for the Lightning unlock, the Wind unlock requires just this single challenge after clearing the Spire itself.
Location and Access
Riddle Square is reached by completing the traversal puzzle inside the Spire of Clockwork. The Spire stands at Breezeblown Knoll in eastern Demeniss. To enter the Spire, you need the Spire of Clockwork Key, which is awarded after completing the main quest A Fleeting Dream at the end of Chapter 8: Blood Coronation. That quest concludes with a boss fight against Lucien Bastier in his tower east of Demeniss, fought exclusively as Damiane.
After defeating Lucien and receiving the key, travel to Breezeblown Knoll, insert the key into the Spire's entrance, and complete the clockwork climbing puzzle inside. At the top of the Spire, an Abyss Gate forms. Step through it to be transported to Riddle Square.
Prerequisites
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Story Progress | Complete Chapter 8: Blood Coronation (main quest: A Fleeting Dream). Defeat Lucien Bastier as Damiane to receive the Spire of Clockwork Key. |
Crow's Wing | The gliding ability is essential. Without it, the time trial cannot be attempted. Crow's Wing is learned from the Stamina skill tree. |
Stamina (Level 5+) | The rings restore stamina as you pass through them, but having at least Stamina Level 5 provides a comfortable buffer for sections between rings. |
Force Palm | Needed at the end of the time trial to activate the final wheel mechanism. Force Palm is learned earlier in the Abyss progression. |
Axiom Force | Used to activate the starting receptacle that begins the time trial. Axiom Force is a core ability required for nearly all Abyss puzzles. |
Time Trial Walkthrough
The Riddle Square challenge is a continuous aerial course. You must glide through a series of rings within a time limit. Missing too many rings or running out of time means restarting from the beginning.
Starting the Trial
Use Axiom Force on the yellow receptacle near the center of the island to begin. This activates large fans positioned around the arena and causes the ring course to materialize in the sky above. A timer starts as soon as the fans spin up.
Phase 1: Initial Ascent and Northeast Loop
The central fan launches you upward into the air. Activate Crow's Wing to begin gliding. Turn northeast and glide through the short series of rings that loop to the right. The rings are spaced close together in this section, so maintain a steady glide path and avoid sharp turns. Passing through each ring restores a portion of your stamina, so you do not need to worry about running out during this phase.
Phase 2: Platform Drop and Horizontal Wind Burst
After completing the northeast loop, drop to the platform below. A horizontal wind burst pushes you forward through three rings heading west. Let the wind carry you and make minor adjustments to stay centered on the ring path. The horizontal fans propel you at high speed, so react quickly to ring placement.
Phase 3: Vertical Ring Stack
Another fan at the end of the horizontal section launches you upward. Glide through the tightly stacked vertical rings. These rings are positioned close together in a column, requiring precise vertical control. Deactivate your glide briefly to drop through lower rings, then reactivate to catch the next updraft. There is a slight delay when toggling glide back on, so anticipate and start reactivating slightly before you think you need to.
Phase 4: Final Approach
A final horizontal air burst propels you toward the last set of rings. Glide through them and aim for the platform at the end of the course. The controls can feel floaty during this section, and the wind currents may push you off-course. Overcorrect early rather than late.
On the final platform, cling onto the wheel mechanism and use Force Palm to complete the activation sequence. This stops the timer and completes the time trial.
Tips and Common Mistakes
Floaty controls: The gliding physics in this trial feel looser than normal traversal. Give yourself extra room when approaching rings and start turning earlier than you normally would.
Free-fall segments: Not every section is pure gliding. Some gaps require you to drop and then re-engage your glide to catch upward drafts from the fans. Anticipate these transitions.
Reactivation delay: There is a brief delay when toggling your glide back on after dropping. Start reactivating slightly before you think you need to, especially in sections with quick transitions between falling and rising.
Multiple attempts are normal: The time trial is one of the more mechanically demanding challenges in the game. Expect to fail on the first try while learning the course layout. Each subsequent attempt is faster as you memorize the ring positions.
Stamina is self-sustaining: The rings restore stamina as you pass through them. Having Stamina Level 5 provides enough endurance for sections between rings, so you do not need to invest heavily beyond that.
Use Force Palm at the end: The final mechanism requires Force Palm, not a lever pull. Make sure you cling onto the wheel before using the ability.
Rewards
Completing the time trial activates the wheel mechanism on the island. Once activated, collect the Abyss Artifact from the platform on the opposite side of the island.
Reward | Source | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Island platform after wheel activation | Unlocks Wind Level 1 | |
Automatic unlock from Wind Level 1 | Deploys a smoke cloud that obscures enemy vision, allowing stealth repositioning and surprise attacks | |
Conqueror of Spires progress | Completing the Spire of Clockwork | Counts toward the trophy/achievement requiring all eight Spires |
Storm Veil
Storm Veil is the Wind-element skill unlocked by completing Riddle Square. It costs 10 Spirit to cast and belongs to the Health (Red) branch of the skill tree. When activated, Kliff deploys a cloud of smoke that functions as a smoke bomb. Enemies inside or behind the cloud lose track of Kliff, breaking their aggro and allowing for repositioning, flanking attacks, or stealth takedowns on disoriented opponents.
While Storm Veil is the least directly offensive of the four elemental skills, its tactical utility in both combat and exploration is significant. It allows you to hide from enemies mid-fight, create openings for ambush attacks, or safely disengage from dangerous encounters without taking damage.
Comparison to Other Abyss Puzzle Islands
Most Abyss islands in Crimson Desert focus on environmental puzzles involving Axiom Force manipulation, laser redirection, or timed target shooting. Riddle Square stands apart as a pure movement challenge. The closest comparison is the aerial segments of the Courtyard of Precision, which also involves floating platforms and aerial aiming, but the Courtyard pairs its aerial segment with ground-level Focused Shot puzzles rather than continuous gliding.
