Lucian Bastier
Lucian Bastier is the thirteenth campaign boss in Crimson Desert, fought during the A Fleeting Dream quest at the end of Chapter 8. Players are forced to fight as Damiane in a two-phase battle where Bastier transforms from a shield-wielding knight into an awakened monster form that teleports and summons shadow demons.
Overview
Lucian Bastier is the thirteenth campaign boss in Crimson Desert, encountered during the A Fleeting Dream quest at the conclusion of Chapter 8: Blood Coronation. This fight is unique because players are forced to control Damiane rather than Kliff, who is injured and unavailable for this encounter. The battle takes place in a tower to the east of Demeniss.
Lucian Bastier has two full health bars with a dramatic transformation between them. In his first phase, he fights as an armored knight with a shield and mace that deals explosive fire damage. After losing his first health bar, he undergoes a full awakening into a monstrous form that constantly teleports, summons shadow demons, and attacks with terrifying ferocity. Many players consider this one of the most frustrating boss fights in the campaign due to the forced character switch and the relentless aggression of both phases.

Phase 1: Lucian Bastier
In his first phase, Lucian Bastier fights as an armored knight wielding a shield and mace. He blocks the majority of frontal attacks, forcing players to reposition constantly. His mace strikes deal explosive fire damage that spreads along the ground in a straight line, punishing players who dodge backward.
Phase 1 Attack Patterns
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Shield Block | Bastier holds his shield up and blocks all frontal attacks. He will counter-attack after absorbing a few hits. | Do not attack from the front while his shield is raised. Dodge sideways to get behind him before striking. |
Mace Combo | A series of mace strikes culminating in an explosive ground slam. The final hit creates a line of fire on the floor. | Dodge sideways (not backward) to avoid the fire trail. Attack from behind during his recovery after the combo finisher. |
Floor Explosion | Bastier slams his mace into the ground, creating an explosive fire eruption that spreads outward in a straight line. | Dodge to the side. The explosion travels in a line, so lateral movement is always safe. |
Shield Bash | A quick forward lunge with his shield that stuns the player on hit. | Dodge sideways and punish the recovery window. Do not attempt to block this attack. |
Phase 1 Strategy
The core strategy revolves around two of Damiane's abilities: Blinding Flash and Smiting Bolt (Damiane's Right Trigger ability). Use Blinding Flash to stun Bastier before his charged attacks land, then follow up with Smiting Bolt for safe damage. This combination lets you chip away at his health without having to engage his shield directly.
One advantage Damiane has over Kliff is her speed. She can dodge repeatedly without exhausting her stamina as quickly, which is well suited to a fight that requires constant repositioning. Always dodge sideways rather than backward to avoid the fire trails from his mace attacks.
Wait for Bastier to commit to an attack combo, dodge to his side or behind him, and land quick attacks after he misses. Breaking his guard requires only a few hits from behind. Do not try to brute-force through his frontal shield.
Phase 2: Awakened Lucian Bastier
After losing his first health bar, Lucian Bastier undergoes a monstrous transformation. In this Awakened form, he abandons his shield and mace in favor of raw supernatural power. His attacks become extremely fast and aggressive, and he gains two new mechanics that define the phase: constant teleportation and shadow demon summons.
Phase 2 Attack Patterns
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Teleportation | Awakened Bastier constantly teleports away from the player, making it extremely difficult to land sustained combos. | Do not chase him. Wait for him to stop moving, then close the distance quickly with a dash attack. |
Shadow Demon Summons | Bastier summons spectral shadow demons that attack the player. These demons cannot be damaged or killed; they must be endured. | Focus entirely on dodging when shadow demons are active. Do not try to attack Bastier while they are present. Wait for them to disappear. |
Rapid Assault | Extremely fast melee attacks with minimal wind-up. He chains strikes so quickly that blocking or countering mid-sequence is nearly impossible. | Maintain maximum distance and dodge repeatedly. Only engage when he pauses between attack chains. |
Spectral Copies | Bastier creates multiple copies of himself that attack simultaneously from different angles. | Focus on evasion until the copies fade. Do not waste abilities on the copies. |
Phase 2 Strategy
Phase 2 is an endurance test. Awakened Bastier's constant teleportation makes sustained offense nearly impossible. The winning approach is to wait for brief windows when he stands still, then execute a quick combo: Blinding Flash to stun, basic attacks to deal damage, Smiting Bolt as a finisher, then immediately disengage.
When shadow demons appear, stop attacking entirely and focus on dodging. Trying to deal damage while the demons swarm you is a quick way to die. Once the demons fade, Bastier typically stands still for a moment, creating the best damage opportunity in the entire phase.
Avoid using Damiane's pistol. Awakened Bastier dodges all bullets, making the pistol completely ineffective in this phase. Stick to melee combos and abilities.
The key is patience. Resist the urge to rush damage. Each clean combo cycle (Blinding Flash, attacks, Smiting Bolt) chips away at his health reliably. Forcing extended engagements leads to taking unnecessary damage from his rapid attacks or teleportation counterstrikes.
Recommended Gear
Since this fight forces the player to use Damiane, gear options are limited to what is available for her. The recommended weapon is the Golden Vanguard, a two-handed spear obtained from Boss #11 (Gregor, the Halberd of Carnage). Its R1 attack is fast, has long reach, deals more damage than the rapier, and can break enemy guards effectively.
Slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
Weapon | Golden Vanguard (two-handed spear) |
Armor | Damiane's starting armor, upgraded 1-2 levels for additional defense |
Accessories | Equip all jewelry slots: earrings, rings, and necklace |
Abyss Cores | Resource Recovery, Attack boosters, and Damage Reduction Abyss Cores |
Consumables
Bring 100 or more Grilled Meat to this fight. The two-phase encounter with limited healing breaks means you need a massive food supply. Supplement with Hearty Meat Skewers and any purchased provisions from merchants. Overpreparing on food is strongly recommended; the more healing items you bring, the easier both phases become.

Defeating Lucian Bastier completes the A Fleeting Dream quest and concludes Chapter 8: Blood Coronation. After the fight, the story transitions back to Kliff as the playable character.
Tips
Always dodge sideways in Phase 1. Bastier's floor explosions spread in a straight line, so backward dodges put you directly in their path.
Blinding Flash followed by Smiting Bolt is the safest damage combo in both phases. Learn the timing and repeat it consistently.
In Phase 2, stop all offense when shadow demons appear. Prioritize survival until they despawn.
Do not use the pistol against Awakened Bastier. He dodges every shot, making it a complete waste of time and positioning.
The Golden Vanguard's reach advantage is critical. It lets you land hits from outside Bastier's counter-attack range.
Upgrade Damiane's starting armor before this fight. Even one or two upgrade levels significantly improve survivability.
If you run out of food mid-fight, reset and come back with more supplies. Attempting Phase 2 without adequate healing is extremely difficult.
Patience wins this fight. Each safe combo cycle deals meaningful damage. Rushing leads to getting caught in Bastier's rapid attack chains.
