Romance overview
Romance is a core relationship system in inZOI that lets Zois form romantic bonds, go on dates, get married, and build families. The system supports same-sex relationships and allows players to set specific gender preferences during character creation. Romance follows a progression from strangers through Mutual Crush to True Love, with marriage available at the highest levels. Only Adult Zois (Young Adult and older) can engage in romantic interactions. Children and teens cannot romance until they age up.
Setting up romance preferences
During character creation, you configure each Zoi's romantic preferences:
Setting | Options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Gender identity | Male, Female, Nonbinary | Determines how other Zois perceive this character |
Romantic interest | Yes / No (Aromantic) | Aromantic Zois reject all romance and cannot pass Ambivalent level |
Preferred genders | Male, Female, Nonbinary, or any combination | Zois reject advances from genders outside their preferences |
Important: These preferences are locked permanently after character creation and cannot be changed later. Zois will automatically reject romantic advances from incompatible genders.
Romance restrictions
Only Adult Zois (Young Adult, Adult, Senior) can romance
Direct relatives (parents/children, siblings) cannot romance each other
Aromantic Zois reject all romantic advances
Each Zoi can maintain a maximum of 100 total relationships across all types (Love, Friendship, Family, Business)
Romance progression
The Love relationship track follows this progression:
Level | What Unlocks |
|---|---|
Terrible | Lowest level. Result of severe romantic failures or deliberate conflict |
Uncomfortable | Negative level from failed romance attempts or rejection |
Ambivalent | Starting neutral state. Basic romantic conversation options begin to appear |
Mutual Crush | First formal romance stage. Unlocks dates, hand-holding, kissing |
Sweetheart | Confessed love. Unlocks intimacy ("Set the mood in front of bed") and marriage proposals |
True Love | Maximum bond. Full marriage eligibility and strongest romantic interactions |
Building romance
Select romantic conversation options (marked with heart symbols) from the interaction menu
Use the More > Romance tab for dedicated romantic interactions
Successful romantic gestures build the pink Love bar; failed attempts cause penalties
The "Aflutter" mood triggers when romance is going well, unlocking unique interaction options
Physical affection (kissing, hand-holding) unlocks once the Love bar reaches Mutual Crush
Having a high Charm skill significantly accelerates romance progression
Dating
Once two Zois reach Mutual Crush:
Use "Invite on a Date" or "Plan a Date Together" from the romance menu
This opens a social event planning interface where you select time and location
Dates can happen at parks, cafes, community lots, restaurants, and other locations around the city
Successful dates increase the Love bar and can unlock new romantic interactions
Marriage and weddings
Proposing
At Sweetheart or True Love level, the "Ask Them to Marry You" option becomes available
Successful proposal results in engagement
The proposal can be rejected if the relationship is not strong enough
Wedding options
Option | How It Works |
|---|---|
"Get Married" | Immediate ceremony. Quick and simple. The Zois are married right away. |
Planned wedding | Schedule a ceremony through the Events app. Set a date, invite guests, choose a venue. Show up and click prompts during the event. |
Regardless of which option you choose, the result is the same. The Zois become married and their relationship status updates.
Multiple romances and jealousy
Unmarried Zois: Can form romantic relationships with as many other Zois as they want simultaneously. There are no restrictions or jealousy consequences for unmarried Zois dating multiple people.
Married Zois: Jealousy kicks in. If a married Zoi witnesses their partner romancing another Zoi:
The witnessing spouse may confront the cheater (including slapping)
The Affection relationship track takes significant penalties
Repeated infidelity can sour the relationship to the point where divorce becomes possible
Divorce
To divorce:
Select the married Zoi's interaction menu
Go to Conflict
Choose "Divorce"
Divorce may not succeed on the first attempt. The relationship typically needs to sour to the "Distant" level first
Use multiple conflict actions (argue, insult, complain) to lower the relationship before attempting divorce
Once divorced, both Zois return to single status and can pursue new romances
Intimacy
At the Sweetheart relationship level, the option "Set the mood in front of bed" becomes available. This initiates intimate interactions between the two Zois. Intimacy requires a bed in the household and sufficient relationship level. It is available for all romantic pairings regardless of gender.
Tips
Set romantic preferences carefully during character creation.they cannot be changed later
Level up the Charm skill early if you plan to pursue romance. It dramatically speeds up progression
Plan dates at scenic locations for the best mood bonuses
The four relationship tracks (Love, Friendship, Family, Business) are completely independent. A Zoi can be at True Love with someone while also being their BFF and Business Partner
Unmarried Zois can date freely with no consequences. Jealousy only applies to married Zois
If pursuing divorce, use conflict interactions over several in-game days before attempting. Rushing it usually fails
The 100-relationship cap is across all types combined. If a Zoi has too many friends and business contacts, they may hit the cap before forming new romances
