Overview
Create a Zoi is the character creation screen in inZOI. It offers over 250 customization parameters across personality and appearance. Players set a Zoi's name, age group, gender, attraction preferences, trait, and Desired Life, then customize their physical appearance, clothing, and accessories. Most of these choices are permanent. There is no way to change a Zoi's age group, gender, facial structure, body proportions, or trait after creation.
For a faster start, players can download pre-made Zois from Canvas, where over 470,000 creations have been shared by the community. You can download a complete Zoi, a face preset, or just an outfit, then modify it further or use it as-is.
Creative Studio history
Before the full game launched, KRAFTON released the Creative Studio (a standalone free application on Steam) in two limited-time windows. The Character Studio portion ran for five days in August 2024 (reaching 18,000 concurrent players), and the full Creative Studio (with Build Studio included) ran from March 23-27, 2025, just before Early Access launch. Everything created in Creative Studio carried over to the main game via Canvas.
Face editing
The face editor has two modes. Basic Editing adjusts the overall face shape with broad controls. Detailed Editing gives access to individual features (eyes, nose, mouth, jaw, ears) through node-based controls. In Detailed mode, facial symmetry can be turned off to make each side independently adjustable. This is useful for replicating real faces, where nobody is perfectly symmetrical.
Skin tone is set on a continuous spectrum rather than from a limited palette. Freckles, moles, wrinkles, and blemishes can be placed individually. Makeup includes foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick, and blush, each with a full color wheel.
Body
Players choose a Body Type and fine-tune it. Dragging directly on the body adjusts proportions, and separate sliders control Muscle Mass and Body Weight. There are no individual height sliders, male Zois are coded slightly taller than female Zois because all animations are pre-programmed at fixed angles. Different heights would break handshake and sitting animations.
Early builds had a narrow body-size range, but the team widened it after community feedback. Pushing body shapes to extremes can cause clipping with certain clothing, which the developers accepted as a trade-off for greater freedom.
Hair
Hairstyles can be filtered by length (Short, Medium, Long, Tied-Up) and by color customization support. Most hairstyles have five color channels: a base color, a sub-color, and three highlight layers. Each channel has its own color wheel. Separate sliders control gloss and length, so the same hairstyle can look very different depending on settings.
Realistic curly and afro-textured hair requires significantly more data than straight hair, sometimes as much as the rest of a Zoi's body. The team has added more Black hairstyles across updates.
Outfits and clothing
Players assign outfits for different situations: everyday wear, formal, sportswear, and summer. The game switches between these automatically based on context. Garment lengths can be altered. A T-shirt can be shortened into a crop top.
Custom textures can be applied to any clothing item using the AI Texture tool. Type a text description and the game generates a pattern. KRAFTON has confirmed all AI texture generation uses proprietary models trained on company-owned and copyright-free assets only.
The 3D Printer in the Craft tab creates accessories like hats, wings, and masks from uploaded images. It converts flat images into wearable 3D objects using on-device AI. Results work best with symmetrical designs.
Accessories
Eyewear, earrings, necklaces, rings, and nail art are all available. Contact lenses come with a full color picker. Each accessory slot is independent, so multiple items can be stacked.
Canvas integration
Click "Upload to Canvas" at the top of the screen to share a Zoi on Canvas. Other players can download and modify it. Shared Zois retain all customization data including outfit presets and accessory configurations. You can share a complete Zoi, just the face, or just an outfit as a partial preset.
Downloading from Canvas works in both directions. Browse Zois, faces, and outfits during character creation, or queue downloads from the web version at canvas.playinzoi.com to sync on your next session.
What changes after creation
Still editable: Hair color and style, outfits, makeup, contact lenses, body hair
Locked permanently: Facial structure, body proportions, gender, attraction preferences, age group, trait
Desired Life can be changed after creation through the Zoi's profile card in gameplay, not through the creation screen. When adding a new Zoi to a household through Create a Family, that new Zoi has full customization access.
Face scanning
Players can import a photo or use a webcam to generate a starting face that resembles the input. The result is a starting point that can be refined with the normal editing tools, not a perfect replica.
Studio mode
The Studio button changes a Zoi's expression, pose, lighting, and background for screenshots. Over 40 poses and 10 expressions are available. This is separate from the in-game Photo Mode, though both share similar controls.
Developer notes
Tattoos: Early Access tattoos are limited to face and neck. Full-body tattoos (arms, legs, torso) are planned, with an AI system to convert uploaded images into custom tattoo designs.
Body hair: Body hair settings can still be changed after creation, unlike other body features.
