Healing Herbs are a red plant resource in Windrose. The fastest free source is chests at Ancient Ruins, but the Tortuga Food Seller also sells Healing Herbs at 3 Piastre each, and Healing Herb Seeds planted in a seedbed produce a fully renewable supply. They are required for crafting Healing Potion (55% HP restore) and Great Healing Potion (75-80% HP restore) at the Alchemy Table. Chest supply is finite per world, so dedicated alchemy players usually set up a seedbed of Healing Herb Seeds or stop by the Tortuga Food Seller for top-ups, or substitute Undead Essence (drops from undead enemies) in the basic Healing Potion recipe.

Ancient Ruins chests | Chests at Ancient Ruins POIs across the archipelago contain Healing Herbs in variable quantities (typically 1 to 5 per chest) |
Renewable? | No. Once an individual chest is looted, that specific chest does not respawn. Healing Herb Seeds planted in a Seedbed and the Tortuga Food Seller both provide renewable alternatives, so the per-world supply is effectively unlimited |

Uses
Recipe | Materials | Effect |
|---|---|---|
1 Alchemical Base + 3 Healing Herbs (or 2 Undead Essence as substitute) | Instantly restores 55% HP | |
1 Alchemical Base + 3 Healing Herbs (higher-tier recipe) | Instantly restores 75-80% HP |
Both Healing Potion variants are crafted at the Alchemy Table. The Alchemy Table is unlocked by picking up the player's first Misty Orchid and crafting an Alchemical Base from Clay Bottle + Misty Orchid.
Undead Essence Substitute
For players who prefer not to farm a seedbed or visit Tortuga, the Alchemy Table also accepts Undead Essence as a substitute in the standard Healing Potion recipe. Undead Essence drops from undead enemies (Drowners, Swollen Drowned, Plague Thralls) and is fully renewable. The conversion ratio is 2 Undead Essence in place of 3 Healing Herbs for the standard Healing Potion.
Strategy: save Healing Herbs for the Great Healing Potion recipe (which has no Undead Essence substitute), and use Undead Essence for the basic Healing Potion to maintain a steady supply.
Healing Herb Conservation Tips
Hover Ancient Ruin icons on the map to see remaining chest counts; prioritize unlooted ruins
Use Bandages (1 Coarse Fabric, 900 HP over 30s) for non-emergency healing to save potions
Use Bonfire passive healing (slow regen near a lit fire) when not under combat pressure
Doctor Galen's free hourly Minor Healing Potion (35% HP) covers most light combat needs
Reserve Great Healing Potions strictly for boss fights and dungeon emergencies
Resource Sustainability
Chest supply is intentionally finite, but the combination of Tortuga vending, seedbed farming, and Undead Essence substitution keeps the resource fully sustainable for long runs. The design creates pressure to use Bandages and Bonfire rests for trivial damage and to save potions for high-stakes fights. As Early Access progresses, Kraken Express may add additional Healing Herb sources or rebalance the Undead Essence substitution rate; check the Steam Community announcements for patch notes.
Lore Note
Ancient Ruins predate Caribbean colonial settlement in Windrose's alternate history. The presence of Healing Herbs in their chests implies the ruins' original occupants knew of medicinal plants now lost to the wider Caribbean. Whether the Healing Herbs grew naturally at the ruins (and have since died out) or were stockpiled for ritual purposes is part of the unfolding lore the player discovers through note fragments.
Where to Buy

Farming
Healing Herb Sapling is the plantable form of Healing Herbs. It can only be sown in a Seedbed for Plants, which itself requires Fertile Soil to craft. After planting a single seed the crop matures in 55m of real-time growth, then yields the outputs listed in the harvest table below. Replanting is self-sustaining: every harvest refunds at least one seed.
Planting
Planting requirements for the Seedbed slot. Growth time is fixed regardless of player skill level or in-game season.

Harvest
Quantities below are the per-harvest ranges at 100% chance. The seed drop refunds the planting cost, so a single sapling produces a net gain on every cycle.
