Drowners are zombie-like undead enemies in Windrose, shambling through coastal areas and swamp islands. They appear from the early game onward, making them one of the player's most consistent reminders that Blackbeard's supernatural pact has raised the dead across the archipelago.
In the data-mined creature database the undead that wash up along the coast and the swamps are catalogued as Drowned, with two tougher relatives: the night-only Armored Drowned and the toxic Swollen Drowned. The verified stats below come from those entries.
Behavior
Drowners use simple melee attacks and move slowly compared to living enemies. They close in clusters rather than individually, which makes them dangerous primarily when multiple Drowners corner a player on uneven terrain. Their attack patterns telegraph clearly, making parries and dodges reliable counters. Crude-damage weapons (clubs, halberds, maces) are particularly effective against undead enemies like Drowners.
Locations
Coastal Jungle - common on beaches and near water; the Smuggler's Cache entrance has a patrolling Drowner
Cursed Swamps - more common and denser than in the starter biome; frequently spawns alongside Swollen Drowned variants and Plague Thralls
Shipwrecks and coastal ruins - guard valuable loot in derelict areas
Verified Combat Stats
Values from the current launch-build data export for the undead-humanoid family. Every variant resists Fire (it deals 0.4x), shares 120 to 140 Defence, and has zero armor penetration on its strikes, so a clean dodge into a counter is the safest pattern.
Variant | Health | Defence | Melee Hit | When | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1,760 | 0 | 120 | 215 Slash | Dig sites, caches, some shorelines | |
2,000 | 40 | 140 | 215 Slash | Night only |
Both drop Undead Essence, the alchemy ingredient used in Healing Potion recipes, along with Pearl and silver trinkets. The Armored Drowned gives 2 to 3 Undead Essence per kill, making it the best bulk source once you can fight at night.
Loot
Drowners drop low-tier crafting materials and occasional weapon scraps. They are not a priority farming target compared to Pirate Camps, which yield gunpowder and trade goods. Fight Drowners for quest progression, safe passage, and combat practice rather than drops.
Weaknesses and Counters
Fire is heavily resisted (0.4x), so skip fire ammo and oil flasks against this family.
Crude weapons (club, mace, Halberd) and Pierce weapons (Rapier, Musket, Pistol) are the reliable choices; the armored variant in particular punishes pure Slash.
Strikes carry no armor penetration, so even modest Armor on your own gear blunts them. Light copper-tier protection is enough for the basic Drowned.
They cluster and telegraph slowly. Funnel them through a doorway or the lip of a buried-chest pit so only one can reach you at a time.

Community Name Note
This enemy is also commonly called "Drowned Sailor" in other community references. The two names are used interchangeably for the same unit. The in-game discovery log uses one of the two labels depending on the build; either name points to the same creature.
