Undead Essence is a renewable resource in Windrose dropped from undead enemies (Drowners, Swollen Drowned, Plague Thralls, and Blackbeard's Cutthroats). It is a substitute for non-renewable Healing Herbs in the standard Healing Potion recipe at the Alchemy Table. Because undead enemies respawn at Pirate Camps and across multiple biomes, Undead Essence is the sustainable long-term healing potion fuel once your finite Healing Herb supply runs low.

Because Healing Herbs are non-renewable, the optimal alchemy strategy is:
Reserve Healing Herbs for Great Healing Potion only (no substitute exists; HP restore is significantly higher)
Use Undead Essence for all standard Healing Potion crafting (2 Undead Essence vs 3 Healing Herbs; renewable)
Track your Healing Herb stockpile by hovering Ancient Ruin icons on the map for unlooted chest counts
Use Bandages and Bonfire passive healing for trivial damage to reduce potion consumption overall
Undead Essence is the residual supernatural energy that animates Blackbeard's risen dead. Its alchemical properties allow it to substitute for Healing Herbs because both share a connection to life-restoration, but through opposite means: Healing Herbs heal through botanical pharmacology, while Undead Essence heals through repurposing the supernatural energy that should have failed to revive the dead. The Alchemy Table's ability to convert Undead Essence into healing potions is itself a small act of defying Blackbeard's pact, turning the corruption against him.

Drowned spawns on the Coastal Jungle beaches skew heavily to nighttime. The same shorelines that host a handful of wanderers during the day fill with full groups after dark, which means a dedicated Undead Essence farm is roughly two to three times more productive per hour if timed with the in-game night cycle. Bandages, a bonfire torch, and the better of the two light sources in the inventory make the visibility penalty manageable.
The trade-off is risk. Night-spawned Drowned group up quickly, and a single misstep into a cluster can burn through the Healing Potion supply that the farm is meant to replenish. Clearing one beach segment before moving laterally, rather than sprinting through the entire coastline, keeps incoming damage under the potion regen curve.
Beyond standard Healing Potion, Undead Essence is a required ingredient in two other Alchemy Table recipes. Neither competes with healing use cases, so a stockpile of 15 to 20 essence usually covers both utility recipes in parallel without starving the Healing Potion line.

The Homeward Journey use case alone is a strong argument for keeping a permanent Undead Essence reserve in base storage. Without at least one potion ready, a full death run wipes any chest cargo the player was carrying back from a far-island trip, which tends to cost far more than the time spent on a single beach farm cycle.
