Essence Arborum

Essence Arborum is a Cursed Swamps endgame resource in Windrose, harvested from plague-corrupted swamp trees by smelting plague-wood at the Smelting Furnace or Large Smelting Furnace. It is required to build the Enchanting Table (3 Mire Metal Ingot + 10 Hewn Stone + 10 Plant Fiber + 2 Essence Arborum) and to craft Ingot Arborum at the Enchanting Table itself. Stockpile 4+ Essence Arborum per Cursed Swamps trip to keep the Enchanting Table fed.

1. 3 Mire Metal Ingot (smelted from Quagmire Powder + Ancient Scraps)

2. 10 Hewn Stone (refined from gathered Stone)

3. 10 Plant Fiber (gathered)

4. 2 Essence Arborum (smelted from plague-wood)

...you can build the Enchanting Table and unlock the Ingot Arborum recipe, which is the gateway to the highest-tier weapons and jewelry in the launch build. Plan your Cursed Swamps farming runs to gather these materials in parallel rather than serially.

Lore

Essence Arborum (Latin for "essence of trees") is the supernatural sap that infuses plague-corrupted trees in the Cursed Swamps. The fact that plague-wood can be refined into a constructive crafting material reflects the same theme as Tainted Bile and Undead Essence: the player must turn the swamp's corruption into the means of overcoming it. Whether the trees were corrupted by the High Priestess, by older forces, or by some pact with the same dark powers that gave Blackbeard his undead fleet, is part of the swamp's unfolding mystery.

Alternative Recipe

At launch, the only recipe to produce Essence Arborum is the Plague Wood smelt described above (1 Plague Wood = 1 Essence Arborum at the Smelting Furnace or Large Smelting Furnace).

This alternative is useful after Cursed Swamps combat runs that produce surplus Tainted Masks, letting three Essence Arborum be smelted for the cost of one harder-to-replace Plague Wood.

Tool Requirement for Plague Wood

A stone axe will not meaningfully damage plague-corrupted trees. The trees register as a higher-tier resource, so the basic starter tool just chips at them without advancing the chop. An Iron Axe is the minimum practical tool, and a Mire Metal Axe is faster still if you already have endgame smithing online.

This matters because Cursed Swamps trips are stamina-expensive. Chopping a plague tree with the wrong tool can leave you standing in a hostile biome long enough for respawning enemies to catch up, which is the main reason tool tier is the first thing to check before heading out.

Smelting Fuel Note

The Smelting Furnace needs Charcoal as fuel while it refines plague-wood into Essence Arborum. Keep a charcoal stockpile at base so the furnace is always ready to process a fresh haul without a detour through the Charcoal Kiln. A short wait for fuel is fine; an empty fuel bin that delays every endgame craft compounds across dozens of runs.
