Affection Discount
April 25, 2026 at 10:18 AM
Initial version (2026-04-25). Created article for the Affection Discount system added in patch 0.4.9467, covering mechanics, affected shops, and synergy with the Relationship System.
The Affection Discount is a friendship-based pricing system added to Starsand Island in patch 0.4.9467 on April 23, 2026. When the player reaches certain affection levels with the NPC who owns or operates a shop, related items inside that shop are sold to the player at discounted prices. The discount applies automatically whenever the favored NPC is on the counter and is reflected in the listed price the moment you open the shop interface.
The system rewards players who invest in friendships beyond the romance and Cohabitation tracks. Even non-romantic friendships now translate directly into in-game economy savings, giving an extra reason to greet shop owners daily, complete their requests on the Bulletin Board, and bring them gifts they like.
Affection points accumulate the same way they always have. Talking to an NPC, gifting items they love or like, completing their Bulletin Board requests, and finishing quests that involve them all push their affection counter upward. When the counter crosses a threshold associated with a discount tier, the prices the NPC charges in their shop drop until the next threshold is reached.
The discount applies to the items most associated with that NPC's specialty, not the entire shop catalog. Concretely, the affected items at each shop tend to be the goods the NPC personally produces or curates, while bulk consumables and unrelated decorative items typically remain at base price. The system is therefore most rewarding when you build friendship with the NPC whose specialty matches what you currently buy in volume.
Where to check: Open any affected shop's interface after raising friendship and look at the listed price next to each item. Discounted prices appear in place of the normal price.
Who triggers it: The discount is tied to a specific NPC, not to the shop itself. If the shop has more than one staffed counter (for example, Pastelle and Garrick both work the Green Pasture Ranch counter), the active NPC at the time of purchase determines which discount applies.
Stacking: Affection Discounts apply on top of the standard Currency and Economy pricing. They do not stack with festival sale events or seasonal promotional pricing; the larger discount of the two takes priority during overlapping windows.
Restock cost: If you want to level up a shop by buying out its current stock to trigger expanded inventory, the Affection Discount makes that cheaper. This is one of the strongest indirect benefits of the system: the same number of shop levels can be unlocked for fewer Coins.
Every staffed shop on the island whose counter is operated by a named NPC participates in the Affection Discount system. The 24-hour vending machines and the rotating Merchant Ship are not affected because they have no NPC counter to befriend.

Because the discount triggers off the same affection counter that gates the rest of the Relationship System, the fastest path to discounts is the same daily routine that romance-focused players already use. The biggest single difference is that you do not need to romance the NPC to unlock their discount, only to befriend them.
Action | AP Gained | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
Talk to the NPC | +5 | Once per day per NPC |
Give a loved gift | +15 | Once per day per NPC |
Give a liked gift | +10 | Once per day per NPC |
Return a lost item | +20 | Whenever a lost item appears |
Easy Bulletin Board request | +15 | Variable |
Hard Bulletin Board request | +25 to +30 | Variable |
Quest involving the NPC | +50 | Once per quest |
Stockpile each shop owner's loved gift in a chest near their store. Drop in once per day, hand over the gift, ask for any Bulletin Board request that mentions them, and move on. Within a few weeks of consistent play, you can carry a full slate of discounts at every staffed shop on the island.
Affection points feed the same five-heart progression that gates other relationship benefits. The exact heart level at which a given shop's discount unlocks may vary by NPC, but the underlying point thresholds are the same as any other Relationship System milestone:
Heart Level | Points Required | Other Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
1 Heart | 90 | NPC sends gifts in the mail |
2 Hearts | 220 | Photo invitations |
3 Hearts | 370 | Bedroom and treasure chest access |
4 Hearts | 500 | Personalized Bulletin Board requests |
5 Hearts | 750 | Cohabitation (move-in, romanceable NPCs only) |
Prioritize your highest-volume shops. If most of your gold goes into seeds and fertilizer, befriending Graminova first will save more Coins than starting with a shop you rarely visit.
Combine with shop leveling. Affection Discounts make buying out a shop's stock cheaper, so they accelerate the rate at which you can level up shop inventories. Hit the discounts first, then commit to a buyout pass for shop leveling.
Pair with the bedroom chest run. At 3 hearts you also unlock the NPC's bedroom and the two chests inside (one one-time, one weekly). Combine your discount route with the Monday weekly-chest sweep across all shop owners for compounding rewards.
Discounts apply to friendships, not just romance. Non-romanceable shop counters and ranch staff such as Bruce and Garrick still benefit from this system. Befriend them too if you frequently buy livestock or animal supplies.
Watch for festival-window stacking rules. During seasonal events like the Beach Festival and Chinese New Year Festival, short-term promotional discounts may apply at certain shops. Affection Discounts and event discounts are tracked independently; the larger of the two is applied at checkout.
