Neverness to Everness is a free-to-play open-world action RPG developed by Hotta Studio, a subsidiary of Perfect World Games. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game is set in Hethereau, a sprawling urban city where supernatural anomalies and everyday life collide. NTE launches on PC, Mac, PS5, iOS, and Android with full cross-platform play and cross-save support. The experience blends fast-paced hack-and-slash combat with deep life simulation, seamless open-world exploration, and a wide variety of side activities. Each of the game's major pillars is summarized below with links to dedicated articles.
The combat system is real-time and action-oriented, built around a four-character party with instant swapping. Players chain normal attacks, skills, and ultimates while dodging or activating the parry system to counter enemy strikes. Successful parries instantly charge the Esper Cycle meter, which powers devastating elemental reactions when adjacent elements on the six-attribute wheel are combined. Landing hits and parries also fills an enemy's stagger gauge; once broken, the enemy becomes vulnerable and takes significantly more damage. Pairing characters from complementary elements enables powerful trio reactions that reward thoughtful team building. Combat rewards both aggressive offense and precise defensive timing, making every encounter feel dynamic.
Hethereau is a dense, vertical open world that players traverse freely with no loading screens. The exploration and traversal system offers wall-running, climbing, swimming, and gliding. Players can also drive vehicles with full customization and a realistic damage model, ride public transportation like buses and trains, or simply sprint across rooftops. A dynamic weather system and day-night cycle affect both the city's atmosphere and NPC behavior. The world is designed to reward curiosity, with hidden collectibles, perspective puzzles, and shortcuts tucked into every district.
City Tycoon is the game's life simulation layer. Players purchase apartments and decorate them through the housing system, open and operate shops via business management, and unlock a personal vehicle garage. The companion system ties directly into City Tycoon: characters with a high enough affinity level can be placed into your properties, offering unique interactions and dialogue. Leveling City Tycoon to higher tiers unlocks exclusive rewards and even a unique S-rank character, giving long-term goals beyond combat.
Hethereau is packed with side activities ranging from relaxing pastimes to competitive challenges. Players can cast a line in the fishing spots around the city, challenge NPCs to mahjong matches, test their reflexes in rhythm mini-games, or try their luck at claw machines. High-speed street racing lets players put their customized vehicles to the test on Hethereau's roads. Part-time jobs like working at a coffee shop or driving a taxi provide in-game currency alongside a dose of everyday city life. Each activity offers its own rewards and contributes to the sense that Hethereau is a real, lived-in place.
Co-op mode offers team-based PvE content across multiple dungeons. The Bank and The Hospital are large-scale anomaly dungeons that require coordination between players to clear. Pink Paws Heist is an extraction-style dungeon where stats are equalized, shifting the focus from gear to pure skill and teamwork. Additional endgame challenges include high-risk commissions and Circle Bounty missions. All multiplayer content supports full cross-platform play across PC, Mac, PS5, iOS, and Android.
Characters and equipment are obtained through the gacha system, which replaces traditional banners with Scarborough Fair, a board-game mechanic where players roll dice and move a token around a looped tile board. There is no 50/50 system; hitting pity on a limited banner guarantees the featured S-class character. Player progression is tracked through Hunter Level, which gates access to new content, higher difficulty commissions, and endgame systems. Characters grow stronger through character leveling, the awakening system, and equipment enhancement using disks and drive blocks.
The main story follows an unlicensed Anomaly Hunter who joins Eibon Antique Shop, a small team of Espers that takes on public commissions to investigate supernatural disturbances. Anomalies range from minor oddities to dangerous phenomena, and the player works as an Appraiser to assess and contain them. The Bureau of Anomaly Control serves as the government body overseeing both Anomalies and Espers, while The Circle operates in the shadows with its own agenda. Anomalies and Espers were hidden from public view until the Fifth High-Level Anomaly Outbreak forced their existence into the open, setting the stage for the conflicts that drive the narrative.
In a departure from typical RPGs, NTE features a wanted/crime system inspired by open-world sandbox games. Players who cause trouble in the city attract escalating law enforcement attention, with higher wanted levels bringing tougher pursuers. Getting caught can lead to the prison system (also known as the Detention Center), a self-contained sandbox area with its own activities, escape routes, and gameplay loops. This system encourages experimentation and adds a layer of consequence to player actions in the open world.
Tying everything together is Hethereau itself. NPCs follow daily routines governed by the NPC behavior system, weather shifts dynamically, and the city transforms between day and night. Players can interact with the world through cooking, collectibles, and Hethereau hobbies scattered across every neighborhood. The result is an open world that feels inhabited and reactive, giving weight to every activity and interaction within it.
